outpost4 08-24-2006, 07:11 PM Joe, I moved this thread on over here because here is where the GPS stuff is happening. My recommendation? Scroll through the last few pages of threads in this forum. You'll find a ton on GPS.

I just drove cross-country in my new Element using the Garmin Nuvi 360. Absolutely the best portable GPS I've used, and I've used nearly all of them...

You should look at the Garmin Quest or Quest 2. The difference is the Quest 2 comes preloaded with all the N. American maps. It is waterproof, and you can use topo or marine maps in it if you want.... The screen is kind of small, but it gets very good ratings...

Art Vandelay 08-25-2006, 05:45 AM I almost forgot to say - don't get scared off by the price on the Garmin site. The Quest 2 can be found for about $550, and the Quest for about $350....

It is handheld if you want it to be. It's barely the size of a remote control.
It has a rechargeable battery that is supposed to last 20 hours. You can use it in your automobile and it has all the good features of the other Garmin auto gps' (except touchscreen), or you can unplug it and put your marine maps on it, or topo maps for hiking...
Here is the regular Quest:

paulj 08-26-2006, 03:35 PM What capabilities do you want?
Car units in the $300+ range have route finding software that can follow roads, have screens that are large enought view while driving, and may have voice prompts. A hand held unit in the $100 range only give you directions (bearing, distance) directly to selected points. They can be useful for keeping track of your route, and showing where you are on a low detail base map. The smaller screen may be hard to see while driving.
I have an older Lowrance Ifinder unit, with a RAM Mount bolted to the dash (using heat units screws). I also have 12v power adapter, so don't have to worry about batteries while driving. I still depend on paper maps for actual route finding, but the GPS does help me keep track of how far I've gone, and on occasion has alerted me to a wrong route (i.e. it shows me going N when according to the map I expect to be going E).

I have to agree with either the Garmin Quest or Quest2. I got my quest last December for $299 shipped from Amazon.com and it's been a life saver. It's portable with about 20 hours of battery life. Use in the car, hilking, or a boat. (Well, I don't have a boat.) I use it for work every week to get me up and down the east coat.

For doing what you describe, I would really recommend you look at either of the Garmin Quest units, SJ. It is one of the only units you can use for all those activities, and definitely the smallest.
Most nav units made for auto use are not set up to be used with marine or topo maps. The Quests are made for exactly that.
And in case you think I'm just a Quest fanboy, I actually decided not to by one because I drive between 40,000 and 50,000 miles per year for my job and the screen is a little small for that amount of use. I am trying a couple other units made specifically for car use, then I will buy a smaller, cheaper unit for hiking, mountain biking...
Hab Mobile 08-28-2006, 08:24 AM You may also want to consider one of the Magellan handheld GPS systems... I also have one of these for hiking and such and it is pretty inexpensive, depending on your model (the 200 explorer is about $160)... and it is very durable and does it's job... from your posts it sounds as if you didn't want something too expensive and very durable, so look into this along with systems the other posters suggested...
From experience, the Magellan GPS' I've owned have been very reliable and have never given me any trouble. Hope this helps.
Dom.five 08-28-2006, 09:41 AM I use my Garmin GpsMap 276C in the car. I got another chip to load the Charts onto. It has all the marine info I need to go from Boston to long Island NY. or to Maine. It has voice for turns on the road, ( when in street mode ). It is one of the best units I have ever had at any price. I used it to get to St Louis EOC meet this year. It then took us home through Tn, Va, and up the coast to Boston. It never got us lost or turned us down the wrong street.

robertlewisca 08-28-2006, 05:31 PM I just picked up a Pharos Traveler GPS 525. It's actually really nice because it combines a full-function PDA running Windows Mobile 5.0, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS into one unit, and it's small. It comes with the GPS software and all US maps. It provides voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, and the screen is large/bright enough to use in the car. Other advantage - because it's a Pocket PC, it also comes with Windows Media player 10, so I can use it as an MP3 player as well. When plugged into the aux jack, you can listen to music, and hear the voice prompts for the GPS through the speakers. When at a hotspot, I can also use it surf the internet, and with my Bluetooth phone as a modem, I can get internet access anywhere - with which I can get live traffic info overlayed onto the GPS screen.
Anyway, I've only had it about a week, so I can't speak to it's reliability, but it certainly packs a lot of features into a very small device. Worth a look. I picked it up for under $400.

phorq 08-28-2006, 06:00 PM may I recommend taking a look at www.woot.com (http://www.woot.com) today. They have a GPS for pretty cheap today, and today only. The chance to get it will end at 1am eastern, tonight (August 28th).

I am looking at that model for myself. The screen is supposed to be great... If you have time, I have a few questions:
How are the maps loaded? Is N. America preloaded? Do you have to load them by state/ region/ etc.? And how hard is it entering addresses into the unit? And how is the size of it?

smokinjo1979, I use the Lowrance iFinder Pro Mapping Handheld GPS + WAAS. It's great for road, boating and hiking... Just used it this weekend and traced with my map...Right on and was very helpful...
ADAMLSTL 08-28-2006, 11:05 PM REI has a GARMIN ETREX LEGEND CX GPS on sale for $179.99 reg. $299.99... It looks good/color.
smokinjo1979 08-29-2006, 03:03 PM Holly crap they make a lot of gps devices, this is going to suck
smokinjo1979 08-30-2006, 08:11 AM Has any one used the garmin gpsmap 60csx or the gpsmap 76 csx anybody
smokinjo1979 08-30-2006, 10:30 PM anyone anyone anyone
Art Vandelay 08-31-2006, 04:37 AM anyone anyone anyone
Never used either of those, SJ. I thought about trying the 60csx, but thought the screen might be too small to use everday in the car... Can't really go wrong with Garmin, though. Buy it from someone with a good return policy and give it a try. I am trying the Magellan Roadmate 3050T right now - it's good, but for the $499 it costs I think I can do better....
jholland5 09-02-2006, 11:41 AM I use the Treo 700P and TomTom Navigator 5 with a Seidio receiver. It works great. TomTom is the best naviagation software available.
