I've owned my E since January '03 and am quickly approaching 60,000 miles. I need some new tires, but I don't want new wheels (don't want to spend the extra money). Will someone please give me suggestions for new tires. I'm seeking tires with a rugged look and that will fit my wheels.

my choice is going to be BFGs ATs. my 2nd choice is Mich LTX M/S.
that said, i will deal with the road noise.
it is a true truck tire, and wear like iron shoes.

i am going to wait til december to put them on.
i am still debating on size though... many threads on here.

I completely agree. These are great tires.

Michelin LTX M&S
Pirelli Scorpions
Yokohama Geolander

Have had problems over the years with BFG. Crummy quality control of their tires even their low production racing tires ie R-1's.

I love my Geolanders. Great tire wet or dry and even in the snow. :)

Michellin HydroEdge. Great tire. Not rugged though.

Just replaced my factory tires with Goodyear Forteras. More of an SUV tire, the handling and road noise are much better, and it looks a lot better than the stock tire. Someone else was saying in a different thread that they were ranked #2 on a recent list (can't remember what was the top, but the thread was fresh in the forums).

I'm running BFG T/A's because of my specific needs, in stock size 215/70R16, which give you about 1" more tread on the road without changing size. Your specific needs are key to your final selection. All the tires mentioned here are good choices. I will add the "Silent Armor" (brand?) tires that are designed to reduce road noise if that is important to you. All-Terrain tires are great for use in the dirt frequently and generally have much stronger side walls / rim gaurds, but are noisier on pavement.

By the way, congrads on getting such great mileage out of your OEM tires!

Where is the best place to go for tires? I really don't want to spend like 600 bucks when we need new tires (wont be for a while though). We have a firestone near us, a sears auto center, a pepboys, advanced auto parts, and a bunch of private tire shops. We don't go off roading and we are completely happy with the stock tires (don't think they are loud or have bad handling).

While the best place is somewhat subjective, I would suggest that you include TireRack (http://www.tirerack.com/) in your considerations.

They have a feature (http://www.tirerack.com/installer/index.jsp) where you input your zip code and then they give you the addresses of an affiliate installer near you. I've had several transactions with them. They ship the tire to the installer who calls me when they arrive.

Best of luck.

When I was looking for winter tires for girlfriend's car since she is stationed in Spokane, WA I went to Tire Rip Off sorry Rack's web site. Priced the tires and then having them balanced and mounted locally by one of their "selected shops" on the steel wheels she ahd found locally. These places wanted anywhere between $20 to 60 a wheel to balance and mount these wheels.
For a crummy steel wheel. A local shop recommended to me by a BMWCCA member beat Tire Rack's price by $5 a tire and charged $10 a wheel to mount and balance. Local shop saved us about $75.00. I have heard of Tire Rack's local shop charging $80.00 a wheel in the Boston area to mount and balance tires.

The tire shop I use in the DC area is Radial Tire they are a hour drive into MD but their prices and services beat Tire Rack anyday. $11 to mount and balance a tire on an alloy wheel and they offer balancing of the tire and wheel on the car for the same price.

My advice find the shop that the BMW and Porsche drivers use for their tires.
And no this wont be the most expensive place in the area but the place that has the best prices and knows what they were doing. If you own the shop you dont want your installers trashing $800.00 wheels. When I was doing drivers schools with my BMW I was buying 3-4 sets of track tires a year.
Prices will at least be equal to Tire Rack if not cheaper and the service better than their recommended shops.
