Well, I've only had my E for 2 days and the mod bug has hit me. The main reasons I bought the Element was to cart our 2 big dogs around, and get me and my work supplies to my accounts which are spread out all over the mid-atlantic.

I wanted a way to keep the front seats and my work supplies in the back dog-free, so this is what I came up with: I bought 2 vehicle pet barriers ( and 2 extensions ), placed one behind the front seats, and one behind where the rear seats sat before I removed them. I bought a 36"x40" pet bed from Costco and placed it in the middle section and this is what you get: total cost $270

Tomorrow I will take some pics of the intended passengers in their new holding cell... Here they are "in the wild":

Actually tested it out for the first time today, and it worked out great! They have their own space, away from my stuff:)

Do you have to put anything on the ceiling side. Does it leave imprints after you remove it or wrinkle the headliner?

Who makes the barrier? It looks like there is a door in the middle. I first thought it was Four Paws but they don't look the same.

Update: I went by my local dealer to check out the spacing required for our dogs. Darn, I totally forgot about the sun roof. How can one put the second barrier with the sunroof? This is going to be a problem if we get the AWD E.

My E has the sunroof also.

I took a 1x4 , cut it to 31" long, taped the rough ends up with duct tape, and put that across the span of the sunroof, so it actually only touches the interior roof on either side of the sunroof. It has worked well for the past week, but I am going to make a couple of changes to make it work slightly better. #1, I am going to use a 32" board. #2, I am going to get some type of rubbery material to use on the ends of the board, instead of the duct tape. I believe I can get some of those rubber physical therapy bands and cut them.

I will take a pic and post it so you can see what I am talking about...

The barrier is made by Precision. On the box it claims it is made exclusively for Petco... The door is quite useful, actually.

So far I have not noticed any damage to the headliner. The two "feet" that touch the headliner are made of a flexible rubber like material that seems to be made not to affect the vehicle roof too much, but still allows you to make the barrier fit tight enough...

Here are some pics of how I dealt with the sunroof issue. Like I said above, there are some changes I plan on making to make it work better, but overall it is working well.

I love those precision barriers and have been using one for years. You can find them at places other than Petco so check out the internet too.

Boy, I'm glad I only have two Golden Retrivers! All I had to do is lace the seat bungy between both seats to keep them out of the front. Sorry... No pictures of them in the E yet.

I have to say I really love the E, it's a great puppy hauler!

I too installed the barrier, but I didn't like the 1x4. After pondering on it for a while I came up with this solution. Granted I had to go out and buy four small hose clamps - but I think it turned out ok. What do you think?

I took the two smaller posts that came with the barrier and using two hose clamps attached them to the sides. Then I placed the black 'cups' on the newly installed posts. Now, they come up on each side of the sunroof.

What do you think?

Looks good although I see you have them in the very back. Only thing I don't like about the very rear is that their in the crush zone if you get rear-ended.

As you can see from my sig I don't yet have a E. Still working on the wife about that.

In the mean time I'm looking at converting my Civic GX for a puppy hauler. I'm looking at using the same barrier, removing the rear seats, adding a lower platform and some side gates. I want to be able to leave them in the car with the side windows down, much the same way the K9 units do, and still have the car locked. This is for those time I just have to run into the store.

If we get the E I'd like to do much the same but the only window is the side vent but I don't think will keep the car cool enough. One could leave the A/C running but that requires an remote start alarm to be installed.

The other idea I've had is to mount a fax on the moon roof. This one should work:

You can find them at www.actiondogs.com

You should be able to leave the window vents open so it will pull the air through the car. Unless it's a very hot day it should keep the inside about the same as the outside.

I agree, it's the crush zone. I worry about that everytime we load up. It's the one thing I didn't consider when looking for the puppy hauler. We thought we had covered everything, I just didn't notice the crush zone till after we purchased the E. I use to drive a '70 VW bus some 30 some odd years ago, and learned then to keep an extra eye out for potential crashes. You really didn't have a lot of protection up front in one of those. Having one of my pups in the back of the E is much the same feeling. Rest assured, if I see something coming... who ever is in front better make room...

I'm thinking about taking out the rear seats and just moving the barrier to behind the front seats, but two of the pups really like sitting in the rear seats and watching where we're going. The third pup is in the very back.

I have looked all over for these Precision brand pet barriers with the 8 bars and cannot find them.

Does anyone know if Precison still makes them? Any help would be appreciated.
