Hey Everyone long time no talk...

Just wondering what the top speed you have hit.

I have hit 165 km so far

Wowser! And hopefully nowhere about a speed trap. 140 lmh here and I did notice the tach pretty high at abou 4K rpm.

Mine governed out at 180 km/h :(

I let off the gas at 165 kph...........dont want to ruin my record of going without a ticket since october of 1990.

Tops speed is listed as 108 mph or roughly 175 kph.

Got it up to Mach 1, but the sonic boom irritated the neighbors.

With the OD on of course, I don't want to waste any gas

at mach 1 do the plastic panels rattle and threaten to come off?

Can't go too fast!
Can't hear the tunes over the cacophony of
milk bottles rattling when hitting road bumps!

I think the heat rise would cause the panels to melt.

I can't beleive you guys are still complaining about fuel economy...Jon and I went to Quebec and back, with the AC on the whole time and got 30 MPG...and we don't mind giving her a little to pass!! Why are you guys getting such horrible fuel economy...we have been pleasantly surprised with how awesome it is!!

I'm only getting around 375 km out of a tank of gas......not sure what the conversion to mpg is.........but at the rate its costing me $60 a week for gas.

I'd like to know what other box the size of an "e"
gets as good mileage!
I've only got about 4K on mine with a 5spd, but
I'm happy already!
I wonder? Seems it's always the ones racing to the next
red light that complain about gas mileage!
This thing isn't geared to cruise over 120K,
the automatic is probably a little better.

Holy s*#!t!!! That's crazy......Maybe you should plug that hole in the bottom of your fuel tank. I've been getting close to 600km out of a tank of gas with a mixture of hiway and city driving. Mine is a 5spd (I think the twin of Brenda and Jonathan's "E".)

Boy am I ever glad that I decided against the 4wd model.

Y'all can't drive 100 MPH and then bitch about the gas mileage. I'm getting 25 MPG, but that's mostly around town.

Lizzurd, That is horrible for gass milage, you should be getting closer to 600km per tank if you let it run down to nothing. Now if you are getting 375 and then when you fill up you only need around 35-40 liters then you are ok. But if you are filling up and need 50 liters for 375km I would be taking in my E to honda to have a look at it.

To be honest i do go easy on my cars......i ring out every last bit of performance i can get.But even going easy on the gas pedal my milage isnt the greatest.

Base model with five speed will do a tick over 175 in fifth. The tach' appeared to be only at about 6,000-6,2000 rpm. When the governor kicks in and the rev's drop the effects of drag take about 50 KM of the speed in a few seconds.
Done on a flat country road, next to no wind.

Is the governor there to protect the car (engine/transmission), protect the driver (e.g. losing control) or by governmental mandate?

Uh, yeah, 'bout that... I'm sure the governor is more to protect the engine than for legislation. If it was legislation then wouldn't all vehicles be bound to the 145 KMPH our old K car wagon sputtered and weazed to aspire to?

I had figured the engine would top out much closer to the actual red line on the tach and not so close to 6,000 RPM.

On the other hand, the ride and steering felt very good at top speed.

Heh, funny thing...I was flipping through the service manual last night, here's what I found:
---
Fuel Cut-off Control:
During deceleration with the throttle valve closed, current to the injectors is cut off to improve fuel economy at engine speeds over 1,000 rpm. Fuel cut-off control also occurs when the engine speed exceeds 6,700 rpm, regardless of the position of the throttle valve, to protect the engine from over-revving. When the vehicle is stopped, the ECM/PCM cuts the fuel at engine speeds over 5,000 rpm (M/T: 4,000 rpm). Fuel cutoff rpm is lower on a cold engine.
---

The 6,700 doesn't quite jive with what you saw. Hmm.

The car could have a speed based limiter, though. Maybe you remember the Buick Grand National, a car that probably could have gone 130 or 140 MPH, but was limited to 112 MPH because it's chassis/suspension wasn't really up to the task, and because then they could also use a tire that was rated for only 112 MPH rather than having to go higher. So, maybe there is a also fuel cut-off on the E that is activated at 108 mph, rather than being based on a specific engine RPM.

:x The (lack of) milage really torques me! I've got a Sunfire with a 2.2 li that gets double the milage. (650 km, with a 40 li tank).
And I don't buy the line about the shape being a 'drag'. I've driven enough trucks to know the effects. The E is just a pig on gas.
I've taken it to Honda - with my milage fully documented, and they insist it's within norms.

Regards the below quote, are you filling up at an independent or at a major gas chain? Also, are you filling up at the same station or gas chain each time?

I found that McEwan's in eastern Ontario has an ethanol blend that is consistent and so is Esso. I get 25-29 (9 to 10 KM / L) in the winter (highway) and 28-32 (10 KM / L to 11 KM / L) in the summer (highway).

I filled up at an independent and the fuel economy was terrible (maybe 25, tops) until I filled it up with Esso again.
