There is a huge post in the Poll section about this very topic.

My E replaced a '93 Chevy Cavalier (my first car)....and what a piece of crap it was....my family scorned me for not buying a Honda or Acura....but then again I was young and misunderstood.

I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler that is a great vehicle for me. It only has about 63,000 miles on it. But when I saw the E I just had to have one. So now I have both and like both.

My E replaced a '95 Dodge Caravan. The preliminary selection was made by a friend of mine, who happens to be the GM of a local Honda dealer. He used to be the GM of a Dodge dealership, which explains my two previous vehicles, an '85 Ramcharger and the Caravan.

My wife and I are becoming a one car family. We are getting rid of our '94 Honda Accord Wagon and '01 VW Jetta Wagon. I bike and run to work and only really need a car on the weekend.

After 2 weeks of ownership the Element seems a great choice for a one-car family. Oh yeah, -- I recommend everyone try biking to/from work once in a while. Great for the body, great for the mind!

Our E replaced a 1998 Volvo S70 sedan. Not a bad car for the first 40,000 or so miles but it fell apart and self destructed soon after. Unfortunately, we had 66,000 miles on it when we got rid of it (good riddance). We love our Element and plan on driving it forever (at least we are keeping our fingers crossed). :D

A 1998 Civic HB 5 spd, same silver (My 3rd honda silver!) The Civic only had 120k on it, was still running strong and probably would have lasted me another year before I started to worry too much about it exploding. But I said "Why wait? Have fun now". I was getting tired of driving a clutch too, tho I still prefer it from a sheer perfomance POV. The automatic is nice to have now tho, especially in LA traffic.

I live at 4600 feet, and I climb about 3000 of them on the last 12 miles of my commute every day. I also wanted a new car so I would be 100% assured I wouldn't get stuck on that climb. There is NOTHING on the hill from the beginning of the climb to the top. If you break down, you walk. No fun in the snow ;-)

My "E" replaced a 1995 Accord LX with 210,800 miles on it. Everything still worked and the drivetrain was in good shape, but the midnight blue paint looked like crap! Never buy a dark color in Florida if you plan to park outdoors a lot.

Mine replaced a 2002 Toyota Prius. I loved that little car, but since I'm 6'10" and said that I would squeeze into it for mother nature for as long as I owned it, and good old mother nature repaid me with a snow storm that aided in me sliding off the road and rolling it, I decided to get the car I fit into for my next car. Two months before the Prus accident (which is the length of time I owned the Prius--didn't even have plates on it yet), I had a '90 Plymouth Voyager that died on me. I love the Element because it can haul as much as the Voyager, but looks cooler, has a better stereo, and the transmission probably won't die on me every two years.

A 2002 New Beetle (Snap Orange Color Concept) and a 2000 Dodge Dakota. We needed to cut down to 2 vehicles, and the winter last year didn't exactly build my confidence in the Dakota (too light of a rear-end and no traction) or the NB (ground clearance). Plus, I was getting over-paranoid about dings, chips, etc on the Beetle (limited edition and I was wanting to pamper it) to drive it to work (140+ miles round-trip) so it just wasn't getting driven.

The E has to last me 10 years though - so says the wife ;)

My E. replaced two cars a leased 1999 Lexus GS300 that i had for 3 1/2 years returned w/ only 30,000 miles but looked like a 10yr/100k mile (scratched up and dented ) car after i left it on the the streets of Brooklyn for all that time and a 1993 Pontiac Bonneville that I got free when the lease ended and my parents coincedentally bought a new 2003 Accord at the time. Well 4 months into the Bonneville the transmission blew ... ehh 4 free months of no carpayements wasn't soo bad.

95 Dodge Dakota 4x4 - not enough room for the new dog (awesome retired racing greyhound) and possessions and passenger. We now all fit happily in the Element no matter what kind of weather. Plus dog hair is not as much of a problem to clean up as it was in the truck AND I can fit my mountain bike easily in the back without taking off the front wheel like all my friends have to do with their boring cars. Also, don't have to worry about the bike being stolen out of the back of the bed when we go for dinner and a few wobbly pops after mountain biking (don't worry, I don't overindulge, I do have to drive home you know).

My Element replaced a 1994 Ford Explorer. The Explorer was rolling over 300,000 miles when it decided to weld it's driverside front Hub to it's spindle (Bad Bearing)... I said enough is enough.... Sold it CHEAP to my parents after I replaced the hub and spindle. Last I heard it blew it's Head... It was CHEAPER for me to buy a new car... I can proudly say I am a Honda Guy now. I still retain other vehicles, but hardly ever drive them.... 1965 Thunderbird (Classic), 1954 Willys Overland Wagon (Off-road project)...

>My Element replaced a 1994 Ford Explorer.

What a coincidence! Well, I'm still in future tense on the E, and my '94 Explorer is but one of two vehicles being liquidated to get the E. The other is an '01 Ford Escape. 300K on your Explorer is amazing - mine's at 125K, and aside from needing the front ball joints replaced it runs like a top, and has required amazingly little service. It still has the original clutch!

I got the Escape because both of us were weary of the rough truck ride of the Explorer, which was our primary road trip vehicle. The Escape has been nice, but it's bad at things the Element does so well, which happens to be things I do a lot. It also doesn't help that both of the Fords get crummy gas mileage in town -16 or worse. I do like the Escape's awesome V6 performance, but my wife has been pointing it out to me lately that power corrupts.

The E would have been my choice had it been around when we shopped and then bought the Escape, so we're in the process of shuffling the fleet around to make that happen.

I am replacing a 93 Subaru Impreza Sports Wagon. It has ticked past 132,000 miles. :( It is just at the point of costing more to repair then the value of the car. I am looking forward to my E. I am getting it around Thanksgiving. I think I will take a little nap in the back with all the seats down after the big turkey dinner.

I hit one of DC's (in)famous potholes on DC295 on my way to MD Rt. 50 in my 1993 Taurus, a car sized one, hidden by the torrential rain, and, in stop and go traffic on the RT50 entrance ramp about three minutes later, I tapped on the accellerator and the engine jumped off of its mounts, hit the the hood and came down askew. The immediate side-effect is that my steering locked up. The car was totalled.

That was february. I got used to riding the bike for errands between then and september, when I bought my EBP AWD EX. :)

I can see it on my waistline already. :)

I replaced my 1998 Ford ZX2 after the transmission was going out at 92,000. The worst thing about that car was paying $15,000 and then 5 years later it being valued at around $2,000. I'll never buy another Ford or any other domestic because of this fact. They flood the rental car market with their crap and then after a year it all goes to used car lots. So when you see their claims of selling X amount of cars a year it's all BS.

ok I'll step down from my soap box now

My Element replaced a 91 Ford Escort GT.with 190000 miles on it I was hoping to hold out until Feburay and get a 04 but the timing belt broke at 60 mph and screwed up the tensioners and bent some rods. 700+ to fix on a car worth about $1 so I scraped and found and bought my E in about 3 days tuesday to Friday   :D :D

Sherman - our GG Element - is replacing the '91 Accord EX that was written off by the insurance company after I was caught in the middle of a 3-car pile-up in the city. Nobody was hurt (although the Altima that rear ended me looked like hell) but I was ticked that I only had 267,000 KM on the Accord.

Visiting the Honda dealer with $4,300Cdn in hand from the insurance company was a no-brainer. The only surprise was my wife saying "We'll take that one." while I was goofing off behind the display room Element. :) I thought for sure she'd say "No!". I didn't even have to try and twist her arm!

Cheers, Derek

We replaced my wife's Lime Green 2001 Green Beetle. It was a nice car and it had alot of power and turbo, but it was just getting too small when we had our newborn baby.

We shopped for a Toureg, but it was too pricey in the long run so we got the Element as our 2nd choice.

My wife and I are VW/Audi fans, but we moved over to the Honda world when we saw how great the Element was.

Funny you mention 'brick's because that's what my element is replacing...

a Swedish Brick (http://www.swedishbricks.com)!

'89 240DL wagon. 206k mi. Still runs great, so I didn't bother trading it in when I got the element. However, I havent driven it more than 100 mi or so since I bought my Element in July. Basically, I kept it asa backup for times when my Element is in the shop (like monday, 10k mi maintenance!).

Probably should stick to calling the Element the 'Box', since the 'Brick' has long been a name reserved for old volvos, FWIW.[/url]

Mine replaces a '00 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Not a bad car, but a truely uninspired one. Also, the 4WD sucked on it, and I managed to get it stuck on packed snow last winter. As I ski and am in ti process of moving to Montana, it had to go. Traded it with 60K miles, the lowest milage I have ever had on a car I traded, Previous min. milage was 110K.

Maybe but the Brick's name came less from the fact that it is box shaped and more from the fact that it reminded me of the line from the Hitchicker's Guide to the Galexy: "It hung in the air exactally the way a brick doesn't"

When I was little, my Dad bought a '75 orange 244DL with black/ dk brown interior, so when it came time to replace my '95 626, an SOP E with black interior seemed like a natural thing to do. Gotta say, the SOP is a little more, umm, understated than the pumpkin color (cumberland yellow) of the Volvo.

I'm leasing my element . Iturned in a 2001 saturn sl. fine little car and I mean little. gave me no problems. looked at the larger saturns and the vue but you need a v6 for power and they don't discount.
