I am hearing people pop ideas about Vanity plate names, and I think that is sooo cool, but DE really gouges you.. I am curious what the fees are in other states..

Stanard plates are $20 in DE yearly.
Vanity Plates are $40 + $20 standard plate fee= $60, in DE yearly. Yikes HUH?

Here are DE Vanity Plate rules:
The Division sells vanity license plates for vehicle owners wishing to display these tags on their vehicles. Vanity plates may display a single letter or combination of letters or combination of letters and numerals not to exceed seven (7) digits in number. (Motorcycle vanity plates are restricted to five (5) in number.) If the combination includes numerals, the numbers shall be displayed to the right of all letters on the plate. No vanity plate with all numerals is authorized. Hyphens, ampersands and spaces are permitted and will count as one letter. No other punctuation marks are allowed. The Division has final approval on any vanity plate issued and any plate considered vulgar or offensive in nature will be denied or recalled if issued in error.

The fee for a vanity license plate is $40 per year in addition to the normal annual registration fee for the vehicle. The plates may be ordered at any Division facility.

The Division cannot approve any vanity plate that may conflict with any existing license plate. The following is a brief but not all-encompassing list of vanity plate rules. The large number of organizational and special license plates issued by the Division prohibits the publishing of an all-encompassing list of restrictions. Due to conflicting possibilities with existing regular license plates, the following combinations shall not be issued:

The letters "A, C, CL, CT, CY, D, DAV, DU, DX, F, FD, FT, HA, I, KW, MC, MCB, MCE, MCJ, MH, MIA, MP, NIA, NG, PC, PH, POW, R, RF, RM, RV, RT, S, SR, T, TC, TX, or V" followed by a number or numbers.
"I" followed by I's, or any other numbers.
"O" followed by O's or any other numbers.
Any combination of I's, numeral I or I's and O's.
Roman numerals (i.e. XIII, VI)

Jeez, you have a lot of restrictions in Deleware... In North Carolina we get 8 letters or characters and it only costs us $40 total ($20 standard fee + $20 vanity plate fee). My plate currently says HUR!CANZ because I'm a big fan of our Carolina Hurricanes NHL team.

I believe vanity plates in RI are $120. I'm not sure if that is for 1 or 2 years
This price also includes plates that have 3 letters and a number such as MGT - 1

Some of the added expense is because we're a dual plate state. Add a "special" plate like the wildlife or pet ones and it's $150. a year (I am currently trying my best to "justify" vanity plates for the E - but I want both a custom vanity plate and to have it on the special wildlife plate).
And in Texas you only get 5 letters/spaces total - you gotta be really creative here!

Ours (http://www.dol.wa.gov/vs/tr-pers.htm) are $44.75 ($47.75 starting next year), plus a $30 annual fee. $30 from the initial purchase and $20 from the annual fee goes to the Wildlife Diversity Program (http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/diversty/diversty.htm), which is pretty cool. Each plate is reviewed on an individual basis, but WA does give some specific rules regarding prohibited characters (like #, !, and @) and subject matter (like sex, racism, other generally inappropriate subjects).

Here in wonderful Wyoming we pay $30.00 for vanity plates and that is good for 5 years! Just renew every 5 yrs and you're good. Not too bad a price. The kicker here is you are limited to only 4 letters or numbers because of how they put the county on it. For example, I live in Laramie county which is county 2, then you have 4 places after that. So we get creative. Would be nice sometimes to have more spaces to work with.

Heya Watchman :) I grew up in 7 county, lived in 2 county, and in 5 county. I groove on seeing WY plates here in Colorado and being able to tell at a glance the area the driver is from. You can get creative, for sure -- when my sister-in-law lived in WY she had a plate on her powerder-blue Harley from county 2 that read: 2-Much

Nice looking E you've got there!

Thanks Rock. Yeh, it forces you to become creative or even register in a different county to make something different. A friend of mine has his plate on his '40 Ford that is yellow and says 2-EETY.

"Hey, Lou, did you hear about the guy who couldn't afford vanity plates, so he changed his name to SQ1 NR7?"

"Oh...ya, ya Margie, that's a good one."
