The Blue Ridge Parkway this time of year is pretty, then there is Wintergreen, West Virginia, not a bad drive from the DC area. Luray is nice this time of year, and then there is Strasburg off I81 as well.

If there is any interest, let me know.

OH Very Nice Idea!! Ok, so we need to pick a weekend, before or after Christmas/New Years? We are running out of time here folks, so lets pull out all the stops!!

Front Royal and the Skyline drive sounds great, who's got the Video Camera? Start out at one of the local Front Royal joints: The Grapevine, Knotty Pine, Royal Oak Tavern, Skyline Diner, Victoria's, Soul Mountain Cafe, and then Epicurious Cow in Washington, VA.

We need a date and time to meet.

Skyline Drive Night Closures

From November 13, 2006, through January 6, 2007

between Front Royal (Mile 0 at U.S. Highway 340) and Thornton Gap (Mile 31 at U.S. Highway 211), and
between Swift Run Gap (Mile 65 at U.S. Highway 33) and Rockfish Gap (Mile 105 at U.S. Highway 250),
will be closed daily between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.
The central portion of the Drive, between Thornton Gap and Swift Run Gap, will remain open for overnight access to Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Campground until those facilities close on November 26.
Then, beginning November 27, 2006, through January 6, 2007, the entire length of the Skyline Drive will be closed daily from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.

So, it looks like as long as we don't get there BEFORE 8AM and are off the Drive by 5PM, we should be good for the 10th.

So, is Skyline still and option??? What do you folks think?? Do we plan a stop along the way, photo ops and little games? Longest distance driven, Highest miles on Odometer, most Mods, etc?? What do you guys/gals want to do??

From the park web site

Ice Storm Closes Portions of Skyline Drive

Date: November 27, 2006
Contact: Shenandoah National Park, 540-999-3500

Downed tree branches from a recent ice storm lay in front of historic Skyland cabins

Shenandoah National Park has implemented closures of the Skyline Drive due to extensive damage caused by an ice storm. The ice storm which began on Wednesday, November 22 resulted in power outages and thousands of downed trees and limbs. Crews worked throughout the Thanksgiving day and on Friday to open the Skyline Drive from Thornton Gap at Route 211 south to the Big Meadows area and from Front Royal to the Dickey Ridge area at milepost 4.5. All other areas of Skyline Drive remain closed.

Park staff will assess trails and structures today and will continue to clear Skyline Drive of debris.

Park visitor centers, lodges, restaurants and gift shops closed for the winter on November 26. The Skyline Drive is normally closed from 5 pm to 8 am each night during hunting season.

Skyline Drive will re-open as conditions warrant. Park visitors are encouraged to call 540-999-3500 for additional information and updates regarding the status of the park.

Since I've been crowned Queen here! The date is set for the 10th. At current count, I have 10 Es. We need a solid number here folks.

As it stands now, Skyline drive is open from 8AM to 5PM and we'll meet for lunch around 11 (is this good with everyone?) Speak now, please.

I live in Marshall, VA, which sounds pretty central for all. Not sure how many planning on coming from Southern VA; but if you are, come up RT17 North, passing through Warrenton and you'll hit Marshall at I66.

There is a McDonald's off exit 28 on I66, we could meet there at about 10AM and then head on up I66 from there to Exit 13 (Linden/Front Royal). (Those coming from the South, RT 17 will take you over I66 and less than a mile, you'll see the McDonald's on your Right.)

Where we are right now is choice in places to eat. I've phoned several, here they are:

The Grapevine: All American w/a little bit of everything else, reasonably priced, parking lot able to accomadate 10 Es. Quiet Family atmosphere.

Knotty Pine: All American Country Style, Lounge w/Bar and Juke Box in back, parking lot able to accomadate 10 Es.

Royal Oak Tavern: Lots of everything, prices start at $5.50. Smoking/Non Smoking areas, 2 tables of 10 depending on number of folks. Lot able to accomadate 10 Es.

Soul Mountain Cafe: *which right now has my vote* wide varity of foods from lump crabcake sandwiches to caribean style pulled meats, salads and cold/hot sandwiches. Prices range from $7 to $15 for lunch fare and the atmosphere sounds great.

Just so you folks know, I'll drive up Sunday and check these places out to get a better idea of what we are dealing with.

Anyone else with ideas or suggestions? I've got a few 'games' we could play as well. Furtherest driven, most miles on odometer, most mods, etc.

Don't forget your cameras, both digital and video.

GREAT! Are you guys planning on taking 17 all the way up? I wouldn't suggest it, it takes far longer. If at all possible, hit 64, 295, then 95 to 17 just past Fredericksburg.

Folks live in Williamsburg and it takes me 2.5 hrs by RT17 to I95 to get home on a good day. Glad to have you!! Looking forward to it!!

Hey all I just saw this. I will not be able to attend, but you may want to notify US Dept. of Interior. When there is a group of people showing up on Skyline Drive, they want to know so than they can notify restaurants and security stuff.

The person you want to speak with is:

Bridget Bohnet
US Park Ranger

We did this during MINI Takes The States and they were not very happy with 50 MINIs showing up un-announced.:)

UPDATE: 12:26 PM 12/08

We are a day and a half away from our December 10th Meet up in Front Royal.

I have some new information I'm working on to add here and I've an updated list of who's attending and who can't make it. But I still don't have responses from a few.

ME - Be there
Lifeisgood - VA Beach - 2
RocketDog - Chesapeake -
Kattoon - Rockville -
box-E - So. MD -
DCbox - Petersburg/DC - 2
doug78 - Ocean City, MD - 2
BuckNakedBooda - Woodbridge -
tooljedi - Chesapeake - 2
Igneouss - NoVA -
Hab Mobile - MD -
dog drool - 2
RedHatchGuy -
Campan-E Car - Frederick -
lwclancers - Winchester - Up in the air

I've put in a call to US Park Ranger Bridget Bohent as suggested by ELEMENTallyHOPPED. Thanks for that!!! I'm waiting to hear back from her. I've heard back from Ranger Bridget, she said the portion of Skyline we are looking at traveling is open and ok. She also recommended I get speak with their Admin and see about a Permit. She also thanked us for visiting!! :D

As for park closings, there shouldn't be an issue this Sunday, as the weather report is saying nice sunny weather, not warm, but not freezing cold either.

I've added a map to the location of Soul Mountain Cafe in relation to the entrance of Skyline Drive. Soul Mtn Cafe is the A at the top of the map, and the entrance to Skyline Drive is located at the bottom just off Rt 340 in the GREEN area.

http://us.a2.yahoofs.com/users/43f34bc4z39c5d1cc/5d97/__sr_/2168re2.jpg?phAXYeFB.94Iiv.p

(why is that not a picture above??? I followed directions.)

I thought we'd travel the Drive down to Rt 211/522, Thornton Gap Entrance Station. 211, for reference, will take you back into Warrenton, which is a nice drive in itself.

Looking forward to Sunday!

E On!

NO! We are still on for 10 AM.

For those still wanting to meet me at the McDonald's in Marshall, we are still on! But at this rate, we don't have to hurry out unless you want to. :)

So, that means more chicken biscuits for the wife.

Ok, so, the plan is to set out from the McDonald's now around 10:30 or so. Since we might need to kill some more time, there is a quaint antique shop in Marshall, should we need to kill more time. *always my fav thing to do*

Bottom line, I'll be there at Front Royal.

Couple quick questions: Arrival times are nice but approximate departure times help me plan better.

For the McD's in Marshall, what's the approximate time folks plan to leave that location for Front Royal?

For the Front Royal location, what's the approximate time folks plan to leave for the drive up the hill?

Looking forward to meeting folks!

For those who had planned on meeting me at 10 AM at the McDonald's in Marshall of exit 28 on I66, Joe and I will see you there.

For those meeting us in Front Royal at the Soul Mountain Cafe, we'll see you at 12 Noon.

From there, we'll enjoy a nice lunch and then head out to Skyline Drive and down to Thornton Gap Station (211) where we'll exit.

After that, the day should still be young, and it's up to ya'll what you want to do from there.

211 will take us back into Warrenton, nice little town with some nice antique shops. Just an idea.

Ok, see you folks tomorrow!!!

:D The weather couldn't have been more perfect for a day in the Mountains. 56 was projected for the day, but I'm sure it got a bit higher than that. Sun was shining, E's were gleaming, and santa's hats abound.

To start the morning out, there were 6 of us at the Marshall McDonald's. You should have seen the stares my local country boy's were giving us. LOL It was a nice drive up Rt55 to Front Royal.

Lunch at Soul Mountain Cafe was amazing! Everyone had rave reveiws regarding their meal. It was great atmosphere and the Cherry Kamakazi Martini I had with lunch was stupendous!

We did have a mix up with the restaurant, they had moved down the street from their 117 Main St address. I had failed to verify their addres. O well, I'll know better next time.

As we finished up lunch, we headed out to the town square for a few post trip pictures and a group shot. The drive into the park was nice, and we made 3 stops before we heading for home.

Rick or Igneous(sp) loved to climb the rocks for great aerial shots. lol We have fun, and I'm totally looking forward to our next outing.

Check back later for photos. We had some pretty nice photographers there today. :D

Man, what an awesome day! I saw old friends and made new ones. I had the best quesadilla I've ever had in my life. I visited a town that reminded me of my hometown in Upstate NY and got to drive on mountain roads again.

Thank you, Kerri, for setting this E-meet up. You did a fantastic job.

Did anyone see the deer grazing roadside on the way down the mountain? I stopped and got a few pics, but realized when we got to the hotel that I forgot the camera's data cable. :-x I'll have to post 'em when I get home tomorrow night.
