The parking brake actually uses shoe not pads.....

Looking at the same thing right now ! Any advice , I'm at 53,000 , has a little grid at first movement ....

P.S already changed all 4 wheel pads , with ceramic at 40,000 , didn't realize that there was an inner shoe !

I don't understand. Why do you think you need to replace the parking brake pads/shoes? I can't imagine those ever needing to be replaced, unless you descend the Rockies only using the Emergency brake to slow you down. lol

I just rolled 60,000 and use the parking brake every day and it is as solid today as the day I bought it almost 3 yrs ago.

When I first purchased my element , it has always had a squeal from the right rear (which I have posted before) . I have taken my vehicle in for service on this numerous times ! Most dealers of course can't duplicate the problem and one quick fixed it , with me in it , by pulling on the emergency brake while driving and the noise went away ! As I say (quick fix) because the noise always comes back ! I've done this myself numerous times and it quells the problem , till the next time . Somehow I stumbled upon (from this site) that the E has also drums , which I didn't know ! I will be changing them to see if my problem goes away ! It has always been an annoying problem and I thought that I solved it by changing the pads , It has not , and that's why I will be changing them ASAP and can only hope that this will solve it once and for all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just asking for some advice . RELAX

Just for ONE MOMENT, I'm gonna bask in the concept of spdrcr5 being asked to "RELAX" -- not me!

OK, that was refreshing! Back to "normal"...

Every now and then I get a slight groan or squeak out of my E brakes when they are applied or released when parking on a hill (the only time I ever use it because I park in 2nd gear). I just pull up a little on the brake lever while driving slow to scrub off any rust that may have glazed the inside of the drum..."problem" solved.

I also believe that the E brake shoes should last the life of the vehicle seeing they are really only applied when the vehicle is stopped.

Depending where on Long Island you are jesbecause, I would lend a hand in changing the shoes.

yeah good call Genom...I'd try "cleaning 'em off" by appliing the E-brake while moving. Not like it'll hurt 'em since you're planning on replacing the little buggers anyway.

Gotta agree with Larry. The parking/e-brake shoes should be good for a century of normal use. Rust buildup inside the drums can be removed by engaging the brake while the car is in motion, as others have noted.

lol who said I'm not relaxed? I'm actually very relaxed...

I wouldn't change the drum pads, I would clean them if that's where the noise is coming from. Try pulling up on the brake while driving to "clean" the pads and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't then disassemble the drum and use CRC Brake Cleaner in there.

Since I don't have a garage, it is sitting covered up in my carport until Spring.

I've bench tested it and it works fine.:) Sometime in Spring of 2007, it (hopefully) will find a home on the buggy.
