Note: I edited the post to fix the link to the Club Frontier site where this is being discussed.
CoffeeDragon 01-02-2007, 09:00 AM Woot, great thinking! I'm in there like swimwear ;-)
spdrcr5 01-02-2007, 09:02 AM Please fix the link to the Club Frontier website, it doesn't go anywhere.
Thanks for posting this, hopefully many people take advantage of this. Sounds pretty good.
spdrcr5 01-02-2007, 09:05 AM Ok, ignore my post above I found the thread and fixed the OP's link.
1fastvx 01-02-2007, 09:08 AM Thanks for fixing the link!
By the way I cannot access the scanguage.com website. I am guessing that maybe the site got flooded with people and may be down?
John
1fastvx 01-02-2007, 09:16 AM Since the scanguage website seems to be down here is another site with info about the scanner.

dkwvelo 01-02-2007, 11:35 AM Anyone actually have experience with this device?
I don't know much about the ODB II connector or the interface it uses.
I assume the trouble codes are universal?
Are the motor status codes universal?
Is there a special Honda module that would be needed for it to work in the Element?
Thanks,
-David
Easy48 01-02-2007, 12:07 PM I bought one for Christmas. The installation is quite easy.
My question are what information is supplied in the gauges format.
For example, on the Engine Loading gauge (LOD) the manual says that "this is the % of maximum power available currently being generated. In some vehicles it is the maximum available at the present RPM."
I don't know what information from the computer is used for this gauge and I also don't know what Honda uses this information for when they use the connection.

How useful are you finding the device?

Have you been able to validate any of the fuel economy numbers?
I have used a built-in Chrysler trip computer before and found the fuel related data to be less than accurate.
Easy48 01-02-2007, 04:17 PM I haven't yet been able to check all of the features.
I am most interested in the "gauges" features since in a past life I had a string of British sports cars for which monitoring gauges was an absolute necessity.
As I said the real question is what information is being sent to the device and then how the device interprets that info.
I will post how the "trip" features work after my next tank of gas, as this will be the first with the scan gauge.
1fastvx 01-02-2007, 08:51 PM Well I found some more info from a member here on the board.

presto88 01-02-2007, 10:18 PM Exactly how does a "group buy" work? Do I have to send my money to this guy from the Frontier Club? Have any of you done this type of thing before? It sounds like a cool add-on, but could we get ripped off? Am I being paranoid?
HobbyTalk 01-02-2007, 10:38 PM I put in to buy one. You will be dealing directly with a SoCal Motorsports on the purchase. You get a deal because they can get a deal when they purchase a large quantity.
www.socalmotorsports.com
presto88 01-02-2007, 11:17 PM Hobbytalk, I went to the link and checked their "Organizations" list and didn't find either "ClubFrontier.org" or EOC.
Did you e-mail john@socalmotorsports.com to place the order? If so, did you tell him you are with ClubFrontier or EOC?
I apologize if these are stupid questions, but I've never participated in a group buy before and I don't want to screw things up. Thanks.

I emailed John at SoCal Motorsports and told him I was from the EOC and said someone posted a link from the Frontier Club site. He sent me the info I need to send back to him and the price. Here's the email:
Hello,
Yes, pricing is $130 shipped to Cont. USA. CA residents are subject to state sales tax ($139.30 is the total).
PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFO. AND A SALES REP. WILL GIVE YOU A CALL WITHIN THE NEXT DAY OR SO:

presto88 01-02-2007, 11:38 PM Thanks, speedracer, I'll drop him a line. Any many thanks to all of the rest of you. The EOC is the such a great place for this kind of info!
1fastvx 01-03-2007, 07:32 AM Exactly...I sent john an email and that was the info he sent me also.

chozn4service 01-03-2007, 08:07 AM Well I've seen the link where it was installed in someones Element. I thought I had seen this some time ago. Now the question is how accurate or reliable is the information provided and on the one that's installed, does anyone have any install info? It looked nice on the dash in the cubby area but that wire had to be ran somewhere and I'm assuming a hole large enough for a phone jack plug to fit up to or thru. On this buy, will it be just mentioning the EOC will provide a discount or will everyone have to buy within a certain period of time to qualify? Thanks and as always, Peace!
1fastvx 01-03-2007, 08:23 AM I posted info above.

HobbyTalk 01-03-2007, 10:02 AM I did as John did. While I don't have full details yet (they are suppose to call me later) I would suspect you will have to give them a CC number and then they will purchase the quantity needed to fill the confirmed orders. Once they receive the units they will ship them out.
You have to remember, SoCal is going to get a discount because they are going to purchase X number of units. They are then going to pass on the savings to those that are buying. They have to know these units are sold and will most likely want your CC number and maybe even charge your CC before they order.
Why? Because in most cases of group buys, a number of people would later want to back out which could effect the final cost. It is to everyone's advantage that they have confirmed and paid for orders before the buy is done. You wouldn't want to be expecting to pay $130 for something on the expectations that 50 are sold only to find out later the cost is $150 because 10 people backed out of the deal.
If you are not comfortable perpaying for something then I would suggest you just order it yourself and pay the full price.
prior8t2000 01-03-2007, 10:30 PM Hi Everyone,
Just needed to say I like mine. Plus, I would like to purchase another one.
Now what's needed on my side for this lower price?
Tank's

rogwild 01-30-2007, 09:26 PM I got in on the 'group buy'; invoice says mine was 'shipped' Jan 15, but haven't received it yet. Am going on a trip Fri. and want to have it installed by then. Anyone get theirs from the 'group buy', and how long did the shipping take? How was it shipped, USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc. I'm in NW Florida, but over 2 weeks seems like a long time. Contacted the shipper, SoCal Motorsports, but no reply yet.
nacranym 01-31-2007, 04:37 PM i got mine last week, thursday i think, but i live in SoCal area. it might take a little longer to get across the country, especially having to fight all the SuperBowl traffic. <grin>
sorry i forget who the shipper was, either UPS or USPS.

UPDATE: Still no reply from SoCal Motorsports email, but my ScanGauge II arrived today (31 Jan) in the afternoon mail. It was shipped from Linear-Logic, Mesa, AZ; packing list dated (29 Jan), shipped USPS Priority Mail. (SoCal Motorsports emailed about arrival). Reading the manual now, install & checkout tomorrow, trip on Friday. Report will follow.
goosler 02-01-2007, 03:53 PM I bought mine directly from scanguage last november & paid $150 shipped. It's a great diagnostic tool as well as add on guage package for your car........
cfbales 02-02-2007, 10:11 PM Is it too late to get in on this group buy? Also, what has the final price turned out to be? I didn't see this one until it was moved to this new Group buy section.
scorsone 02-07-2007, 07:11 AM Not to take away from this product but there is a free OBDII reader program for the palm pilot and it will display graphs and let you tranfer data to your computer for more storage. The only thing is you have to get a serial cable and an adapter to connect your palm to the OBDII port. I believe it is around $85 for the adaptor but I am sure someone here would know how to make their own for $1.25 from radio shack. Just a thought for anyone out there looking into a scan gauge.
I use my Garmin Ique for navigation and I don't think it would be able to process both programs at once but maybe I will order the adapter and try it out someday soon.
rogwild 02-07-2007, 05:47 PM Is it too late to get in on this group buy? Also, what has the final price turned out to be?
Don't know, you can check. My invoice said $120 + $10 S&H.
rogwild 02-07-2007, 06:11 PM Used the ScanGuage II on my weekend trip, neat little gadget. Still learning all the features. Installed it Thur. afternoon (easy install - hardest part was getting on the floor under the dash to plug it in), and filled the tank. I decided not to use the 'fillup calibration' correction feature until after the trip and found that the "error" increased with each tankful; 1st=-5.77%, 2nd=6%, 3rd=9%, 4th=14%. Setting the 'actual' amount at fill up is quite easy, and hopefully will bring the readings back toward '0%', and give me reliable numbers for 'gas remaining', and miles remaining.
The 'instantaneous' mpg feature is interesting to determine how 'effective' your driving style is on mileage. What is cool, is to go over hill on the interstate, and remove your foot from the gas pedal; and watch the "xxx.xxmpg" climb. My best (momentary reading) was 190 mpg. The down side is hill climbing, when it dips into the 'single digits'.
I mounted mine on the steering column (only obscures the odometer, and trip meter); and the multi-color back light is really nice (can even set it to one of 63 possible colors. Was easy to read, day or night.
'Speed' reading was a couple mph off the dash gauge, but seemed 'right on' when checked with a couple construction site "radar speed signs' (didn't have my GPS to 'triple check' it.
SciJohn 02-07-2007, 09:52 PM The scan guage sounds interesting. I might buy it. I would definately buy it if it could read inside and outside temperature and had a way to download all of the information to a pc.
ramblerdan 02-07-2007, 11:30 PM read inside and outside temperature and had a way to download all of the information to a pc.
Nope.
The ScanGauge displays engine air intake temperature, but not indoor/outdoor ambient. But thermometers are so cheap that that shouldn't hold you back.
If memory serves, software and adapters are available to load OBDII data to a laptop, just as Scorsone noted you can do with a Palm. Might even cost less than a ScanGauge, if you're more interested in recording data than monitoring in real time.
The ScanGauge Web site (http://www.scangauge.com/) lists everything it can do.

John,
This works well !! We have used it several times. The Beta version will do what you need.
It will not do remapping of the fuel system as of this version, but they are working on it!
Have not used it on a Honda !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Rambler and Dom.
I have seen the devices you can use to download obd data to your pc. I was just saying if you slapped some more memory and added a usb plug on this baby, you would have the whole thing in a nice little package.
ramblerdan 02-08-2007, 11:47 PM That's a great idea for the next generation. But they'd have to hold the price.
a1mint 02-09-2007, 05:36 PM I'm a little concerned how it indicates the current mpg.
http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showpost.php?p=172750&postcount=24
"with fast it may flash 44,28,36,33,24,55 etc. With normal maybe 38,28,33,36,24,28. With slow maybe 36,28,31,33,27,28,34."
Sounds like the internal algorithm isn't very good. What it should do is keep a buffer internally for, say, 100 samples, and rotate an updated sample through it, and then calculate the average, and display that. It sounds like it is way too jumpy for anyone to draw any conclusions as to how many mpg it actually is currently using.
I'd like to play with different acceleration levels, and gear choices, and I need to see a real time feed back.
I'm now looking for something more analog. A meter, a rotating conventional gauge, that indicates how much fuel is leaving my gas tank. Something that corresponds and feels more related to what I'm doing with the gas pedal.
Can anyone confirm this scangauge problem?
Does anyone know of any other ways to accurately give me a real time feedback sense of how much I'm using?
I don't like a score at the end of the trip, I want a continuous usage feel.
ramblerdan 02-09-2007, 05:49 PM AFAIK the "instant" fuel economy readout is just another way of displaying mainifold pressure. An analog vacuum gauge would jump around just as much as you accelerated and decelerated. Even so, it's not a bad rough estimate of the kind of mileage you'd get if you kept the pedal mashed to the floor while going uphill in high gear, for example, or continued coasting downhill.
A true fuel-flow display would require a sensor in the fuel line (or pump), which the Element doesn't have. The ScanGauge can only display the ODBII information that the car provides.
Dang, I just found out about this thing yesterday...would have loved to have been in on a group buy.
