UPDATED INFORMATION 02/11/07

Please join us in celebrating the joys of not only owning an Element, but also having such a great place like the EOC to share the love and enthusiasm for the lovely E.

Our 1st Spring Fling will be a day of fun and fellowship, and the one thing that truly brings us together - driving the element.

We plan to start the day sipping on a fresh cup of coffee and getting to know the real 'person' behind the handle. Meet us at the Love's Travel Stop at Interstate 40's Exit 86 (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=NC-226%20%26%20Fairview%20Rd%2C%20Marion%2C%20NC%2028 752&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) in Marion North Carolina on Saturday April 14th. We plan to depart at 10:00am so come early and enjoy the fellowship (and coffee too!). We plan to travel from Marion to the Blue Ridge Parkway via NC 226 and then head north on the BRP from just south of Linville Falls (http://www.virtualblueridge.com/parkway_tour/parks/316_4/) through what truly is God's Country eventually ending at the Mabry Mill (http://www.floydcountyinview.com/mabrymillinfo.html) just north of Meadows of Dan, Va. The BRP ride will cover a tad over 150 miles of some of the most beautiful sections of roadway known to man.

Make your plans now to join us on a fun tour of the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway (http://www.nps.gov/blri/).

In the next few weeks join us as we decide on some great adventures to take on this trip. We certainly cannot do every thing the BRP has to offer.

The official start of the EOC Mid-South Spring Fling will be the Love's Travel Stop (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=NC-226%20%26%20Fairview%20Rd%2C%20Marion%2C%20NC%2028 752&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) at Interstate 40's Exit 86 at Marion NC on the 14th of April at 10:00 am. If you come early, there are several places to grab either a breakfast, or something to eat later on (at the picnic maybe). The Love's Travel Stop has both a Godfather's Pizza and a Subway restaurant. While there are others in the same general area, A Hardee's (hands down the best gravy and biscuits), and a Kentucky Fried Chicken (what would be better for a picnic?). Gas is available here too, not only at Love's but also at an Exxon station. Please keep in mind, you will want to 'stock up' on any drinks, snacks, or whatever for the trip. There are very limited resources on the BRP.

Important note: I have verizion wireless for my cell phone coverage. The reception along the BRP is spotty at best. If you are trying to contact me to arrange a meet-up along the way, keep trying if you don't get through. Also, remember several of us will be carrying FRS Radios (http://www.bestbuy.com/olspage.jsp?categoryRep=cat06000&guideID=1072288099473&id=cat12077&type=page) tuned to channel 7. Although the range will be limited, it will be our only source of communications at times.

We hope to have a realistic schedule in the coming weeks so anyone can join up with us at any point along this wonderful ride. If you are seriously interested in joining up with us somewhere along the way, send me a PM and we will swap cell phone numbers.

Please keep an eye on the thread in the Mid-South forum entitled The semi-official spring fling (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=379513) that is the thread we are using to work out the details. Join us today to help plan this great adventure, and make arrangements to join up with us in April for a Grand Adventure.

Personally, I can't wait!

I second what roneboy said!!! I notice in another thread regarding this cruise that we have an EOC member from Virgina who is going to be joining us. I hope this type of enthusiasm continues the closer we get to the actual day of the event and gather more long distance travellers.

I have talked with bh241, and I am trying very hard to make arrangements to be there....I am originally from that area (Cherryville, NC) and hope to use a visit to my mother as an excuse for being there when the ride goes down!!!!

Hi gisele and welcome to the EOC!

We would love to have you join us for the Spring Fling, it's going to be a great day. We're doing most of the planing for it on an other thread, come read up on it and join in the planning. You can read about it here (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31121) in more detail.

Our thoughts are if any one wants to join us they would be more than welcome to. We are trying to 'nail' down some times so we can post a realistic timetable so others can join up along the route.

If you (or anyone else) is interested in joining up you are welcome to pm me and we'll swap cell phone numbers. Several of us will also have the GMRS/FRS 2-way radios but I'm not certain about the distance they will cover in the mountains.

Now that I've found the proper thread, I wanted to tell you that Deborah and I are coming down to join you. We plan to come down Friday and return Sunday... that way we'll be well rested for Saturday's adventure.

I've also added a link to my signature to help spread the word. :)

Thank you for the extensive legwork, bh241. I truly look forward to meeting even more E owners.

I'm game, but as mentioned I'll be going down Friday and coming back Sunday. Deborah actually has this thing at work where she'll get paid for Friday and Saturday IF we pay for a hotel room for both nights. Wierd, but cool. :) That said, it'd be a pleasure to be part of an E convoy. :D

I do want to remind everyone to check the thread The semi-official spring fling (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31121) for information about this trip. A lot of the planing is taking place there.

I'm really seeing a lot of interest in this trip, I certainly hope we all maintain the excitement as the day drawn nearer.

Hey, come to think of it - you Mid-South people need to get on the ball, it's starting to look like some kind of invasion from the Mid-Atlantic guys and gals!! :-P

Seriously, I hope everyone that wants to can make it, it sure does look to be a great event.

Here's another thing I've been pondering on. I would like everyones input on it since it would require a good bit of my disposable (is there such a thing?) money up front.

I was thinking about having an embroidered patch made up, not sure yet but thinking about having an E in there, some mountains... something like this (of course it would have an E and the text would be something like the "EOC Mid-South Spring Fling 2007 Element Owners Club"

What do you guys think? Would you buy one? If I had to guess right now, I would say maybe $5.00 +/- would be the total cost, but it could be less. I have not asked for any price quotes.

I've submitted a design for the patches. I should have a graphic of it in the next few days. It looks like I'm going to have to order a minimum of 50 patches to get the cost reasonable on the per-patch basis.

If the graphic turns out to our liking, we can have some shirts made, or whatever.

I'll post it as soon as I get a proof copy of the design.

BTW, I posted the Spring Fling Poster here (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=381135#post381135). Be sure to print a few out and spread the word about the Spring Fling!

Things are still on track for the spring fling. Most of the details are posted in the Mid-South forum. Check out this thread (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31121).

I didn't realize that I had not posted the actual graphic I received from the patch place on this thread. Anyway, I approved the design mock-up they sent (it's more of a photographic mock up) to be made into the embroidered patch this past week.

It will be a 3"x4", 9 color, 80% embroidery, plastic backing patch with a merrowed border.

Here's what it should look like:

I know people are coming in from all over, and it will require some overall scheduling if we are to be successful at meeting up with people while en route. I urge anyone that will be trying to get up with us at some point to please send me a pm and we will exchange cell phone numbers. Additionally a lot of us will have GMRS/FRS radios tuned to channel 7.

Now, here's what I'm thinking as far as scheduling:

First option - Shelby, NC - depart 8:00 am

If anyone wants to meet up with me in Shelby, that's fine, but I'm figuring on leaving the Shelby area about 8:00 am. and heading for Marion. I will meet anyone that want to start in Shelby at the Ingle's parking lot on US Hwy 74 and NC 226 (http://www.google.com/maps?q=1818+W+Dixon+Blvd,+Shelby,+NC+28152,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title) (Polkville Road.) This is on the west side of Shelby. We will travel up NC 226 to the Marion area - this is a beautiful two lane road - a nice ride.

Second Option - Marion, NC - Depart 10:00 am

We will depart from Love's Travel Stop (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=NC-226%20%26%20Fairview%20Rd%2C%20Marion%2C%20NC%2028 752&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) (Interstate 40 at exit 86) at 10:00 am taking NC 226 to the Blue Ridge Parkway (at mm331) about 10:30. Then we head north on the BRP stopping at several overlooks along the way.

I do want to stop at the Lynn Cove Viaduct in order to make some group shots. I really really want a picture of a bunch of E's crossing that bridge. I'm estimating we should be at Lynn Cove around 11:20 am. Did I say I would like a picture of some E's going over this bridge?

From Lynn Cove (mm 304) we continue north - again stopping at numerous overlooks. We will make a stop at Price Park Picnic grounds - really more of a 'leg stretcher' and bathroom break. Then continue north and eventually stopping for a picnic lunch at E.B. Jeffress Park (mm 271) at roughly 12:30. Special note: there are NO BBQ Grills installed at this location, if you want to 'cook out' for lunch, you will have to bring along a grill - no open fires are allowed along the BRP. I'm thinking we will probably just opt to pick up some chicken from KFC back in Marion.

This will roughly be the half way point in the trip. Access to those coming from just about any direction would be the easiest at this location. This park is just north of the US 421 intersection near Deep Gap, NC (just outside of Boone). As far as I know, there isn't any road construction going on or planned for the 421 highway like there is for the other main route US 321 to the Boone/Blowing Rock area.

We can take some time here to enjoy a leisurely lunch, a trip to the cascades, and just plain good fellowship. I'm thinking if we head out by 2:00 pm that should allow others adequate time to meet up with us.

From there, we again head north on the BRP - again stopping as we see fit until we reach the ending point of our trip, the fabulous Mabry Mill at mm 176. My guess is that we would reach it at roughly 5:00 pm. That should allow us time to enjoy the sites there, and still have time to say our goodbyes before we all go our separate ways.

Those who are extending the Spring Fling into the 'official' camp out, will head back south to the Meadows of Dan Campground and enjoy even more comradely and fellowship.

So what do you think? Get your maps out and take a look. We hope to see a lot of Element owners at this event.

Deborah and I are going to drive down to Shelby on Friday. Google says it will take 6 hours and 41 minutes to get there. If anyone would like to caravan, please let me know.

I found a convenient Days Inn about a mile from the 8:00 a.m. starting point (Hwy 74 and NC 226 (http://www.google.com/maps?q=1818+W+Dixon+Blvd,+Shelby,+NC+28152,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title)) - $58 for the night. For those who would rather sleep in a bit more and start from Love's Travel Stop (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=NC-226%20%26%20Fairview%20Rd%2C%20Marion%2C%20NC%2028 752&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) at 10:00, Google says it will take you 6 hours and 36 minutes (5 minutes difference) to get there so it's all about how early you want to get up.

In theory, leaving Hampton Roads by noon would put is there about 7 p.m. in time for a nice, relaxing dinner and some chill time.

So who's game?

Sadly it appears that the majority of the facilities along the BRP will not be open during the Spring Fling. While it will be an inconvenience - mainly due to the limited restroom facilities, I cannot in good conscious change the date of this event now, it's just too dang close and there are too many people who have made plans.

I will try and come up with some locations of Gas Stations near the BRP where we can schedule 'breaks". Stay tuned...

http://www.nps.gov/archive/blri/masthead.gif
http://www.nps.gov/archive/blri/abbott66.gif PARK RULES AND REGULATIONS

The National Park Service has always balanced two goals: protect the parks and allow visitors to enjoy them. What happens when parents try to show their child nature by coaxing a deer closer with food? How do we protect the park from the people and still provide the public with the recreation they want? First, visitors must learn how to take care of their parks. If you have a question, ask a ranger! If you're not certain, don't do it! Here are some ways to make your visit to the Blue Ridge Parkway good for you and the park. Many of these regulations are enforced with fines up to $5,000 and up to six months in jail. Remember, preserving the environment is everyone's job!

Weapons
Hunting is not allowed on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Like any national park, the Parkway is managed as a preserve for wildlife. No hunting is allowed, and all types of weapons from slingshots to shotguns are carefully controlled.

Weapons are restricted in the park. It is illegal to have any loaded weapon inside the park boundaries. All weapons must be unloaded and either rendered inoperable or inaccessible. In addition, concealed weapons are illegal on park land even if you have a state concealed weapons permit.

Spotlighting is illegal. This is one of the more commonly broken laws in national parks because visitors often see no harm in briefly turning their headlights on a group of deer at night. However, this does disturb the deer and can easily be mistaken for attempted poaching. Alcohol
Open containers of alcohol in a vehicle or in a public place are prohibited, except in designated picnic areas, campgrounds, and concessioner-operated locations. Drinking and driving is taken very seriously in national parks. Resource Protection
Drive defensively. The Parkway provides an open clearing that attracts wildlife, especially at dusk and dawn. The best thing that you can do to protect wildlife from your car (and your car from wildlife) is to be alert and slow down!

Keep your pet on a leash. This is as much to protect your pet as the wildlife. When a loose pet chases a squirrel or raccoon, the wild animal's ability to survive is threatened, and when it is threatened, it may react aggressively.

Never feed any wildlife, even by accident! Leaving food on picnic tables or throwing trash in the woods teaches wild animals to raid your campsites. Hand-feeding the deer is even worse, since that teaches wildlife to approach humans. The deer or raccoon that eats from your hand this summer may starve this winter because it has forgotten how to find its own food. In addition, a tame deer is easy prey for poachers.

Picking wildflowers is prohibited. It might seem a small matter to let your child pick a handful of daisies, but if everyone did this, soon there would be no daisies to enjoy. The same rule applies to the gathering of chestnuts, since the chestnut is an endangered species. The cutting of ginseng and pollonia is also illegal, but other edible plants may be collected for personal consumption only.
Vehicle Safety
As a rule, the speed limit on the Parkway is 45 m.p.h., except in developed areas and near major intersections, where it drops to 35 m.p.h. Traveling at faster speeds might cause you to miss a hairpin curve, or hit an animal, cyclist, or pedestrian. Motorcycling the Blue Ridge Parkway is enjoyable, but we have more than our share of motorcycle accidents, many times because the operator is not careful enough in negotiating the winding, frequent curves.

Accidents must be reported. If you are in an accident, or witness one, you must report it to a ranger as soon as possible. If a ranger is not in sight, call 1-800-PARKWATCH and report it to the operators. Remember, hitting an animal with your vehicle is considered as much of an accident as two vehicles colliding.

Road closed signs mean business. If you are traveling on the Parkway during the winter months, chances are you may encounter portions of the road that are closed due to winter ice and snow. Even if the road ahead looks clear, you should never attempt to drive on any closed section of the Parkway. Steep overhangs can cause icy patches to remain long after snows elsewhere have melted. Camping
Designated Campsites
Camping is permitted only at designated sites. Sites are for use by a single family or parties not exceeding six persons. All tents must be on pads provided.

Recreational Vehicles
RVs are allowed in tent sections only when all existing RV sites are occupied and adequate parking for RVs is available in the tent area.

Parking and Driving
Vehicles are to be parked on the pavement of an assigned site or in designated parking areas. Only two vehicles may be parked in each site (i.e., trailer and car, two cars, two motorcycles). The speed limit in the campground is 15 mph.

Skateboards and Roller Skates
The use of skateboards, roller skates and other coasting devices is not permitted in the park or campground.

Wood Gathering
Wood gathering for use as fuel in park facilities is limited to dead material laying on ground within 300 yards of campgrounds and picnic areas.

Disturbance of Animal or Plant Life
Wildlife must not be disturbed in any way. Hunting or trapping animals is prohibited. Do not interfere with animals by feeding, touching, or teasing them. Store food in a locked vehicle to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife.
Plant life is protected, too. Do not drive nails into trees or strip bark, leaves, or branches from trees or shrubs. Use the lantern posts provided at each site. Do not hang lanterns from trees or loop them over branches or vegetation; these practices always damage and sometimes kill trees and vegetation.

Dogs, Cats and Pets
All dogs, cats, and other pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet or under physical restraint at all times while in the park. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

Drainage and Refuse
Campers must dispose of their waste water at public restrooms or dump stations only.

 OH Yeah, I think the tummy's will be growling by then:D And yes, there will be some strange people there:twisted:

I'm game. Re-thinking the plan though, if I bring Megan I have to see if the hotel will let me stay with a dog.

Getting excited for the meet. Here's a Blue Ridge Parkway fact:

Did You Know?
Several of the early designers, architects, and engineers of the Blue Ridge Parkway worked together on New York's Westchester County Parkway, incorporating many of the same design elements.

More did you know...

Did you know that the section of BRP we are traveling will have both the very first section to be built (ground was broken on September 11, 1935 at Cumberland Knob, North Carolina) and 52 years later the 'missing link' (Lynn Cove Viaduct in September 1987)?

I tagged an E in Harris Teeter's parking lot this morning... NBP, side steps and spoiler. No stickers except the inspection piece. I think it belongs to an "outsider."

Good for you, I've tagged so many lately... I've been stuffing the flyer for the fling in the door handle. I have yet to run across an EOC sticker...

BTW,

the SOP E I tagged yesterday... you have room for an EOC sticker right beside the GWU sticker. :)

who ever has the Root Beer SC I tagged at Shelby's Wal-Mart - NICE CAR!

And the guy I spoke with Saturday in Biscoe, NC - sorry if it looked like I wasn't interested in talking with you, I was up to my ears in the dogs, I had to get them to the Charlotte area to meet with potential adopters. I hope you do come to the fling.

I've tagged just shy of 30 e's now, I have maybe 5 copies of the flyer left maybe I should print some more... :D

For those that missed it, there's a thread (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33561) in the Mid-South forum with pictures of the Spring Fling.

Thanks to those that came out - the weather was a lot better than was predicted, the rain held off till the very end. Everyone got into some rain either returning home, or while camping. But the Spring Fling was rain free. :-)

Can't wait till the next one!
