As I sit here and ponder my beer bottle, I wonder what everyones favorite beer is (that is if you do drink beer)

Definitely a tie between Guiness and Yuengling

I drink way too much bud light and amstel light (depending on the establishment) due to caloric intake concerns.

When I'm in the mood, I opt for most of Sam Smith's line (Nut Brown Ale is my favorite, of course) or Newcastle. In Pittsburgh, it's Yuengling or Rolling Rock, depending. On St. Pat's day, it's Guiness, of course.

Jury's still out on the newly imported Smithwick's: not sure it's the same brew as what I had in the old country.

Oh, and Singha with thai food, of course.

I'm a beer snob. But here in the land of the microbrew...it's hard not to be.
This evening it was a local Porter (Perseus Porter from Elysian brewery.

Generally, my three favs are:

Snoqualmie IPA
Perseus Porter
Stone ......IPA(can't remember the name right now, too much Perseus...)

I SOOO miss Yuengling Lager -- it was my first beer. Since moving to Georgia I simply cannot find it. Now I drink Pilsner Urquell from the Czech Republic -- not expensive and very good taste. Honestly though, I probably drink more wine now (gotta think of the heart).

Ha...I would have to say my favorite beer is FREE!

I've probably tried over 300 beers so far, and haven't found a steady favorite. It all depends on the mood, the day, the food, etc.

All the choices above are good candidates though.

I guess it depends on the restaurant. Here in town my wife and I have about 4 favorite restaurants. We live in a SMALL town of 80,000 including the students. At The Globe I always drink black and tans. At Depalmas its rolling rock. Jalapenos its Negro Modelo and at Mellow Mushroom I drink Boddington. When I am at home I drink either Corona, South Paw (trust me its a really good cheap beer) or whatever the friends have left in the fridge.

Foster's. It's Australian for beer, mate. Spent 2 weeks in Sydney and never drew a sober breath. What a wonderful town!

Okay, where can I find Polygamy Porter? That's something I'll have to add to my collection. What collection, I down them as soon as I get 'em.

I'd rather be a good liver than have one.

>Okay, where can I find Polygamy Porter?

Wasatch Beers is a Park City (Utah) microbrewery. I can't even begin to imagine the challenge being a producer of alcoholic beverages in Utah.

My current favorite is Moosehead - I tend to like crisp and slightly sweet. For a mass-produced brew it's not bad.

I used to favor Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve (Blatz, Portland, OR), but when they were taken over in the big brewery buy-up of the '90's, they seemed to lose their edge once they became merely another "formula" brewed by a conglomerate. It's also impossible to get in St. Louis, and I'll give you three guesses why... and the first two don't count.

I used to favor Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve (Blatz, Portland, OR)...
I really enjoyed Henry Weinhard while I lived in Oregon during the late 1970's. It was a definite upgrade from the omnipresent Olympia.

Currently I have found taste enjoyment in 3 distinct beverages:

Bell's Amber ale, a Kalamazoo, Michigan based brewery with a distinctive line-up. Nice nutty taste.
Shipyard Ale, brewed in Portland, Maine and also at their brewery in Florida. Very crisp and smooth.
And, I have recently become a closet drinker of Labatts. I have no idea why...but I enjoy their beer.

Polygamy Portor is 3.2%, so its not really an alcoholic beverage. Utah is the only place where you can drink beer to hydrate before a bike ride.

ha...I've herard of Polygamy Porter, i think they mentioned it in Maxim or something.

The "mormon town" we have here sells NA stuff only (which actually has alcohol in it), and there is a store that sells videos with all the good stuff edited out or dubbed over.

Just drank more of the Keoki "sunset gold" that we get here. Its excellent stuff. Try it if you get a chance.

As for Fosters, you have to go to oz to drink the real stuff (and Fosters Ice-that is good stuff). The stuff we get here comes from the Canada brewery. But if you're down there, you might as well drink some XXXX or VB. Aahhhh, Australia, the place to drink beer-they have drive-thru liquor stores, so you know they're serious about their beer.

I was once told by a friend: "Fixxy, there are two types of beer....free and cold."

Being recently removed from college life (I received my Master's in Informatics less than a year ago), I'll usually drink just about any beer...except for Stroh's. And yes, I'm getting bitter beer face just thinking about its terrible taste.

Being from Buffalo, I normally drink Labatt's, courtesy of our wonderful neighbor to the north.

Being Irish, I can drink approximately 45 Guinnesses in one sitting.

So with that, I say "Any port in a storm.", but would prefer some Blue or Guinness. :D

ps. All beer tastes better when an EOC can koozie is wrapped around the can or bottle and you're sitting on the tailgate on a warm spring day.

Never heard of Yuengling here in Illinois, but I'll ask at my Friar Tuck's next time.

As for me, I prefer Bass Ale, Amstel Light or just plain old Bud Light. I do on occasion however pick up a pack of Sam Adams or Budweiser. I like variety. ;)

Lowanhair
05-19-2004, 10:08 AM
Yuengling is definitely a good choice in beer. Introduced to it while in Maryland
by friends and took quite a liking to it. For my money nothing beats a pint
of Guinness(except two pints!). I love full flavored beers, I can't abide wimpy,
watery American stuff (Bud, Coors, Miller, etc., etc.).
For those of you with a Food Lion near you, check out Blue Moon. It's a
domestic brewed Belgian style wheat beer. I tried a pack last week and liked
it a lot, good flavor and no bitterness; went down well with pizza and steaks as well.
Here's my list in order of preference:

Guinness (Brilliant!)
Black & Tan (Guiness & Bass)
Bass
Harp Lager
Yeungling
Blue Moon
Killian's Irish Red
My own urine
Michelob
Budweiser
Coors
Miller

Something magical happens when you open up a Dead Guy Ale after a day of kayaking. I don't yet have a hitch, so I can't install that way cool opener pictured above. In fact, that hitch cover may scream "beer inside"; not something you want to advertise when leaving your E all day at the trailhead, river bank, or ski area parking lot.

Well, as I see it there are two kinds of beer

1. Free beer

and

2. Cold beer

usuall every type of beer falls into those two catagories. You won't buy warm beer, but you will drink it if its free.

To have a beer the caliber of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale plentiful, well, it makes a guy who in college regularly got drunk on Olympia all fuzzy inside.

Corona = the number one imported beer in the United States. I just learned that and it surprised me.

I've got to tell you a story. It's probably not PG rated, but for what passes for PG now-a-days, maybe it is.

Half a dozen years ago, I was seeing the Dead at Alpine Valley (my local venue) and wanted a beer. Miller has the franchise for the place. I could have walked up to any counter and bought a Miller without waiting. Miller now owns Leinenkugel, a small western Wisconsin brewery. There was a long line for a Leinies. I waited in line a few minutes, decided I like music more than beer, and got a Miller. By the time I was back at my seat, I was laughing. I told my friends I have Miller's new advertising slogan. It's a lock, the best one they could ever come up with:

Fụck it, I'll have a Miller.

That's it. Fụck it, I'll have a Miller. It's perfect for them. Blue collar. Edgy. Rock 'n' roll. The people's beer. Fụck it, I'll have a Miller. I swear, if they'd use it as their new slogan, they'd make millions.

Sweet young thing shakes her head, says something I can't hear (did I mention that just about this time the Cards baseball crowd comes in?) so I say "Old Style". Another shake of the head so I says, "Bring me a beer". Still don't know what it was, but my standards ....well, a beer is a friggin beer when it's 95 degrees in St. Louis. Couldn't use the F word cause Mrs. IRV would have kicked me and the little girl was the same age as my baby daughter.:)
SHOWMES? O yea... http://www.showmes.com/newindex.htm :-P I like the wings....

That is funny! Someone gave a painted wooden plack to the guy (Gonzo) I work with that said the exact same thing(with Ben Franklin on it)...

If Gonzo gets in a bad mood on a hot day I just yell out BEER...he pauses and smiles.

I have been drinking Jack and Coke lately but, did have one (FREE) beer yesterday with a couple of my friends at a local Auto show....6,7 or 8 Jack and Cokes? The bar Chromed put it on and spent most of the time just B.S.ing in the bar after looking at all the cars because it was just to dang hot.

I'm not sure about everyone here, but in DC, we have several locations that boast one of the largest beer selections in the world. One is RFD Washington (REgions finest drinks) and the other is the Brickskellar. I think they have some odd 900 beers available from around the world at any given time.

My favorite happens to be Bluebird Bitter. Yup, tops them all. If you get the chance to drink one, don't question yourself, just order one:

Also, make sure you try a Czechvar, the real Budweiser (a stolen name):

I grew up a baptist in texas and alcohol was a no no. I didnt drink in HS or college (Baylor Bears) and wasnt really into that scene.

I moved to NC and started grad school in Religion at DUKE and the Methodists taught me to drink. My first beer was a 32oz corona while studying for a church history exam. It was excellent.

Quite quickly I came up with my beer rule:
If you can find it on the side of a NASCAR, its off limits. So far I have never broken the rule. Well, except when I have been in South Carolina, where its really hard to be nice to your host and keep the rule.

So far I have never been steered wrong and usually order the house's draft, trying for a brown ale.

Tonight, I will be drinking a couple bottles of Ithaca Beer Comany's Summer wheat beer we picked up while we were in Ithaca NY last weekend.

Other favs: yuengling, newcastle, shipyard export ale and the occasional shiner boch when texans are around. Shiner might break the rule now though.

My new thing is pub cans; anytime I see something in a pub can I'm overcome with a compulsion to buy and try. My new favorite is Abbot Ale, by the Greene King Brewery (UK).

As it's summer, I'm also going through an enourmous amount of India Pale (again trying every new one I come across). I can't get enough of that refreshing hoppiness when it's hot out!

Once fall comes however, it'll be back to the english stouts, so dense and thick you could stand a spoon up in a glass. Mmmmmmm.....

You're my kind of beer guy, gladestrider. Different beers for different seasons. I like the hoppy beers we'll get shortly, the Octoberfest brews. Not all year but for a change.

New Glarus has special brews that appear from nowhere and are gone in a couple of months. They had a Belgium that was to die for a while ago. Next time I see it I'm buying a case or two.

As for trying out a new Inda Pale Ale during summer, I, too, am a sucker here. I wish I could find the Flying Dog Pale Ale in my area. I can buy it in Madison, and I do when I go there, but not here in La Crosse.

Isn't it great that the rest of the country has finally clued into the pleasure of a micro-brew? I know, micro-breweries have been becoming more and more common for around 10 years now, but I still remember when they were scarce. I also remember the day when you considered yourself lucky if you could find a 6 of Anchor Steam or Sierra Nevada, instead of settling for Mic Dark. Anchor and Sierra made some great beer, but they were among only a few that received (relatively) widespread distribution.

My favorite thing about the whole phenomenon, however, is looking up a new brew pub everytime I visit a new city. We're lucky to have a great one here in Flint, MI, called the Redwood Lodge. Ask Dom.five or his wife about thier brews :) I used to visit an Ex in Madison about 8-9 years ago, and would bring back a growler or two from the Great Dane. It's been a while since I've been there, and I'd imagine there are a few more brew pubs that have sprung up since then.

Micro-brews new?

I don't know ... maybe the fact that I grew up in a college town increased my access. I have always drank microbrews. My dad and I actually had a running joke for years about Miller light - we had 2 cans left from a 12 pack that someone gave him and we'd try to give them to each other in weird, surprising ways. He duct-taped them to the front bumper of my old civic overnight; I got a rafting outfitter to fake a contest & then tell him he won & they gave him a box... suprise! Miller light!

Point is, we are both beer snobs. I'm cracking up - I used to drink Paulener Hefeweisen in college, Chimay Ales, Rouge Shakespeare Stouts, etc....

I have to say, though, that I am glad to find them in bars beyond college towns - especially since I no longer live at home.

Ah, beer.

Might need a Skinny Dip later on today.

I'm not a Yuengling fan although it is popular around here. Sam Adams is another favorite of the Pittsburgh crowd, most of whom do, I think, know that is a product of Pittsburgh Brewing Co. WHAT???? You want me to pick a favorite? Which is your favorite pet, your favorite child, your favorite lover?

My dirt cheap "house" label is Huber Bock. $6.99/12 from the Huber Brewery est. 1845 in Monroe WI, also makes the Berghoff brands.

There is always some Guinness in the beer fridge, also a Summit Seasonal or Pale Ale and some of Sam's Boston Lager or Seasonal. Other than that I grab a 6 or 12 of whatever tickles the fancy. I'm not picky as long as it's not from a can and isn't a "big" brand.

The brew pub on my way home from work makes an Oatmeal Stout that is one of my favorites.

Man, Orangee, if you could send me some Boulevard Heifweinsen that would be great. Brings me back to the days in St. Louis. As for US beer, has anyone had Ommegang brand from Cooperstown NY? Great Belgian style ales. I had some Watasch stuff a couple of weeks ago in SLC, great brews. No real good micros down here, when in Philly Flying Fish out of Camden does some great stuff, otherswise Rogue brews are pretty readily available.

I usually tend toward the dark and stout end of the scale...

Speaking of which, one of my favorite beers is a Brazillian beer called Xingu. It's dark and complex, yet has a slightly refreshing nature.

Also, being a Michigan native, I have to support Bell's Brewery (formerly the Kalamazoo Brewing Company)!

Beers heavy in the wheat make my mouth and sinuses swell, I get itchy just watching others drink Blue Moon. For a time I was afraid I was allergic to beer. You cannot imagine the concern that this caused. Lot's of drinking, sneezing and wheezing led to the conclusion that I was just drinking the wrong beer.

I'm working on a Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout at the moment, it's a tough assignment but I'm definitely up to it.

sam smith's oatmeal stout is the best. period.

It's nice. I try to enjoy a Sapporo when I visit our local crazy Japanese chef. They guy runs a "Hibachi" style place out of an old gas station. There is one grill/table. The owner is the chef, his wife takes the money and fetches the beer. I love him, but hillybilly Ohio doesn't seem like the most hospitible environment for him. It's hard to compete with Bob Evans . . .lol.

So, yeah. Sapporo is good stuff.
