spdrcr5 02-26-2007, 05:38 PM We are trying to gauge interest in various activities in Las Vegas. Please let us know if you're interested in participating in these activities and I'll get pricing on them. I don't have exact details but you can easily see for yourself what they each are.
As I think of more I will add to the list, but for now these would/could be the group activity for Friday or Saturday.
Dom.five 02-26-2007, 05:59 PM Hoover is a fantastic take! It's changed since 9/11. You are no longer allowed inside! The tour is still interesting for people that have not been there. It is however the only thing you get to see. There is not much of anything else there!
EDIT: I stand Corrected !
EDIT: http://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/service/DiscoveryTour.html
A fly over of the canyon is pricey, but interesting.
Freemont is something I would do time after time !
It may behoove us to offer free time, to enable people or groups of people to see what they want.
Some of the hotels offer tours of several types. Has anyone asked the hotel for a list of services?
Dom
Junebug 02-26-2007, 06:34 PM Even if it doesn't end up being organized, I will make it to Ethel M. Oh yes, I will make it to Ethel M. ;)
I'm neutral on the Freemont thing, but a big busload of Element owners sounds fun.
DCbox 02-26-2007, 07:25 PM Even if it's not on the list, I'm interested in the Neon Boneyard.
hownowcb 02-26-2007, 07:50 PM Is it just me? Or did spdrcr5 misspell that first poll option? Here I was thinking, "Hookers (Dayum!) Tour"!
ramblerdan 02-26-2007, 09:14 PM Can't go. :(
Dom.five 02-26-2007, 09:36 PM I'm in for Freemont Street. (Already did the dam and ST.)
What did you think of the Dam ?
I liked it the first time I went. The inside was fascinating. I was hoping to do that with the wife. but it was closed.
Dom
The Rube 02-27-2007, 10:55 AM The Rube & Mrs. Rube "don't" go on planes, the other things sound interesting. BTW, what is "Freemont Street?
Dom.five 02-27-2007, 11:08 AM I stand Corrected !! Thanks Patty !

Thanks for confirming what I had heard. I thought the dam was only closed for 2 or 3 yrs post 9/11 then reopened.
My thoughts for the Hoover Dam Tour would also include Ehtel M's with an option of a Grand Canyon flight. We'll get all of the details and see how we can organize this. I am hoping if we can get 40+ people interested in the Dam/Ethel M's we can probably get our own Tour Bus. Could be nice if we can do that then have them get us from our hotel. :)
bh241 02-27-2007, 11:55 AM I had to put my 2 cents worth in. I can't make it this summer to the meet, but I have been to Vegas before.
I took the tour of Hoover Dam back in '93 and it's a great experience. Totally one that you will enjoy. I do know they have built a new visitor center since I was there. (There was a good bit of controversy over that. ) At any rate, if time allows take the tour, you won't regret it. :)
Fremont street... can one even go to Vegas and NOT go to Fremont Street? 'nuff said :???:
Star Trek don't have a clue, but hey it's Star Trek isn't that enough? ;-)
And the Grand Canyon... defiantly go there, no matter what, go to the grand canyon. I cannot emphasize this more, do not miss the opportunity to visit the grand canyon!
biocube 02-27-2007, 12:02 PM what about mountain biking at bootleg canyon?
spdrcr5 02-27-2007, 12:12 PM what about mountain biking at bootleg canyon?
That would be something you can arrange for yourself. I won't be even attempting to organize any bike trips. :)
The Hoover Dam Visitor Center was finished many years ago and came out great. It was very nicely done and more easily allows for tour buses and lots of cars to park there.
The Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton has expanded to now include I believe 3 or 4 different exhibits. I was the original one many years ago and enjoyed it. Any SciFi buff wouldn't want to miss it.
Fremont Street is part of old Las Vegas. They offer lots of things to do and see and at night the street is lit up in a laser light show.
Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon shouldn't need any explanation. :)
Ethel M's Chocolate is a very high end chocolate factory. You get to see them making the chocolate, then they have a store for tasting both chocolate as well as some great ice cream. Outside the place they have a beautiful desert garden that is really nice.
ramblerdan 02-27-2007, 01:40 PM Rube et al.: Vegas.com is a good starting point for learning about the many wonders of Sin City.
Dom: The inside tour wasn't operating when I was there. It's pretty cool from the outside, though, and not a terribly far drive from Vegas.
The Star Trek Experience (http://www.startrekexp.com/) is a must-see for any Trek fan, and fun for normal people, too. I've done the Borg "ride" and the original ST:TE, which they appear to have replaced with Klingon Encounter, so I might just have to go back!

Will you be going in costume? :)
Junebug 02-27-2007, 02:48 PM Oooh, a tour bus sounds really fun ... I'd happily pay extra for that. And Freemont Street sounds fun too so add another vote from me there. I just don't fly more than required and am not into Star Trek per se.
I'm so excited about Ethel M! Peanut Butters!!!! YUM!
myspark1 02-27-2007, 04:23 PM You can expect to see LL and I there for all of the above with the exception of the Grand Canyon tour, which we see twice a year without fail.
It will be GREAT to go with other EOC'ers that are also Trekkers to the Star Trek thingy. We went almost five years ago during our honeymoon, but haven't been back since. Can't wait to see the new stuff. Also down with the Dam tour and Freemont Street Experience; and chocolate!
Bitchin'.

Totin' Notes 02-27-2007, 04:47 PM My thoughts (as a frequent Las Vegas visitor):
The Grand Canyon is a must-see for anyone who hasn't been there. No question about it.
The Star Trek Experience is a must-see for even the most casual of Star Trek fans. But since we're not all Trek fans, maybe not a good group choice.
Fremont Street (yes, "Fremont" has only one 'e') is cool, but not really "group outing" material, if you ask me. It's just some old-skool casinos and an LED light show.
Never done the Ethel M's tour. But hey, it's chocolate!
Hoover Dam is not nearly as amazing as the Grand Canyon, but it's closer (and cheaper) and still pretty darn cool!
If I may suggest some other fun activities:
A group outing to a show. Mac King (http://www.mackingshow.com/) gets my vote as the "most likely to be something a disparate group of random people will all like". Plus it's in the afternoon and not very expensive. I'm sure a group rate could be obtained.
The Liberace Museum (http://www.liberace.org/). No, really, it's a hoot. Why are you all giving me that look?
A group convoy to Valley of Fire State Park (http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm). This would actually get my top vote. It involves driving, which makes it appropriate for us. And the scenery is amazing--more so than Red Rock Canyon if you ask me. (Plus, the Trekkies could visit the spot (http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/s/st_gen.html) where Captain Kirk died.)

slimerdogs 03-07-2007, 06:25 PM The Freemont experiance is great and it starts every night when it gets dark and goes until midnight every hour for 10 minuits and a different show every time. There is parking next to it and its easy to walk over from it. The Star Trek experiance is good for all the trekies if you haven't seen it yet and there is a lot of other things to do there like Fly Away and a few great roller coasters ect. And of course you might win the big money!!! It will be hot that time of the year.
I was there last week and the traffic is getting terrible around the strip so the back road thing was working great. If anyone is going from So cal maby try to convoy there.
Brian

Here is one clip I found on Freemont experiance. The sound is not good but you get the idea what it is like.
Twilightzero 03-13-2007, 08:58 AM Speaking from my own interest, I'd be GREATLY interested in seeing the Blue Man Group show there ;)
Just my $.02...

I would also be interested in seeing the Blue Man Group. I have seen them advertised everywhere and they look cool. So, I second the vote:D
spdrcr5 03-13-2007, 09:25 AM I can say with 100% certainty that we will not be getting any tickets to any shows at any sort of group discount. It would be far too difficult to manage and get people to agree to a single show they wanted to see.
There is nothing to stop anyone from making plans to see a show on their own. I am thinking about getting tickets to see Cirque du Soleil's Love show.

ChumsGum 03-13-2007, 11:34 AM i'd like to suggest a ride through Red Rock Canyon http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/ and maybe show tickets to KA at MGM.

The "LOVE" show is the best Cirque du Soleil show I've seen !!:)
Blue Man group is good too, good for kids.

I'll second visiting the Liberace museum. Oh my gawd it'd be FAAAAABulouth!
Actually a few years ago they brought Liberace's rhinestone-encrusted piano here to get repaired by a local piano tech who I guess is considered one of the best. Had to suspend it from a crane to get it in his shop though ;)
Tim Vance 03-14-2007, 08:11 PM Speaking from my own interest, I'd be GREATLY interested in seeing the Blue Man Group show there ;)

I don't know about you, but every major city has a Blue Man Group playing. They are everywhere, and there is nothing to say you are seeing the 'original' or 'actual' group. If I want to see them, I'll just go to Toronto (it's closer to me)
sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but I was really excited about seeing them as well, until I found out they were everywhere....:x
hownowcb 03-14-2007, 08:19 PM "Earth calling Canada...Tim"
The Blue Man Group is doing a major tour this summer. Last I heard, there's only one. Different dates for different cities, regardless of what country they "perform" in. Check the dates and cities...

Actually the original 3 guys that created The Blue Man Group have long since retired. They trained about 2 dozen other guys to perform the 3 rolls. Those guys tour and perform all around the world. The original guys last performed probably in the 1990's.
hownowcb 03-14-2007, 11:26 PM Heh -- Consider, I coulda said Microsnot is one of the major sponsors of the whole Blue Man Group "gig", but up until this moment, I hadn't! :D I can only make so many people angry with me in a single night, Larry! ;-)

Well it's a bit of a long story...but here's the gist of it:
3 guys, artists, philosophers, whatever, were in NYC in the artsy fartsy scene back in the 90's. They were doing this little act where they would get all dressed up in blue makeup and play aliens who were trying to fit in with earth culture. The reason they dressed up is they wanted people to concentrate on the act, not on the people playing in the act. They actually had a pie in the sky vision way back then of becoming faceless rock stars, where the show is all about the music and the act, not the individual performer.
Well one thing led to another and they opened up a wildly successful theater show in NYC...then they trained some other guys to do the show and opened up another one in Boston. And one in Chicago. And one in Vegas. About that time, they were recording their second album and decided to do a big tour to promote it and to introduce people to the Blue Man show, hence the first national tour. That was really their dream from the beginning - to have a major rock show that had no "recognizable" performers.
Anyway what you're hearing about now is the second tour from the second album, albeit a somewhat modified and expanded show. It's really a great act to catch if you can, well worth every penny. I've seen them like 6 times when I was in Boston and I also caught their first national tour on the Minneapolis stop and already have tickets for their stop here :D
Ok hope I didn't bore anybody but I love their act and hope this helped clarify things a bit :)
no1dmbfan81 03-22-2007, 11:44 AM I highly suggest an Element meet in the smokey mountains of NC, I just came back from my E's first road trip up there, the E was great in the mountains and went down the dragons tail (record holder for amount of quickedst twists and turns), almost every car club and harley club goes there annually. Its an awesome trip and lots of stuff to do in the area including a cherokee casino, great hiking, kayaking, river rafting, biking, etc. things most people that bought an element would be in for, we could all spend one night in our cars and go on a big rafting trip. There are also tons of good priced cabin rentals which is what I do and only like 45 minutes from gatlinburg and pigeon forge, TN, very tourist friendly areas.

a8048a 03-25-2007, 08:03 PM Seeing as I live in Las Vegas and am a native may I offer a few suggestions:
1. Hoover Dam is great and for the adventerous ones there's great flat water kayaking below the dam through Black Canyon.
http://www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/lake_mead/hoover_dam.html
2. Probably the best sight to take in while in Las Vegas is Red Rock Canyon. I dont know why this isnt listed as a choice in the poll. Red Rock is literally 20 minutes from the strip and holds some of the best hiking and views in all of the West.
http://www.nv.blm.gov/redrockcanyon/
DOGBOX 03-31-2007, 05:21 PM Hows about dinner at Emeril's restaurant? I think some kinda bus tour would be fun. Great congregating opportunity.
I haven't signed up for anything yet, but I am calculating my possibility of attending on an ongoing basis!
shbroznlv 04-08-2007, 06:29 PM If are serious about a group dinner at Emeril's restaurant at MGM (The Fish House)...pls let me know in advance.
The GM is one of my best buds of many many years...

iamwoow 04-16-2007, 12:38 AM The view from the Stratosphere Tower is a must-see when visiting Las Vegas.
You might even be able to fit your E's in their elevators to the top! heheh

shbroznlv 04-25-2007, 09:42 PM The Element, it could be the next new ride at the top!

Hahah! I can see a bunch of 4-seater E's attached to each other to make an awesome coaster.
