To start off, I wasnt too enthusiastic going into the movie. I've seen the previews. Looked like a stupid ghost story, a mindless plot, an attempt to be the "Tombstone" of the colonial/pirate age.
When I walked out of the movie, I had a huge smile on my face, and I let my brother know with certainty that this was quite possibly the best movie I've caught in theatres since "The Matrix".
I'm overly critical of movies. I fall asleep in the middle of ones that bore me with extraneous CG-enhanced fight scenes (Matrix:Reloaded, both LOTR's, etc etc). In this one, however, I was on the front of my seat, very often with a huge grin on my face.
I'm not an action junkie by any means. Quite the contrary, I appreciate movies that delve into characters via great acting and storytelling. A few of my short-list of favorites have been Amelie, Harry Potter 1, Trainspotting, and Fight Club.
Anyways, all I have to say is, this is the first movie in a couple years that I will forcefully recommend to anyone I know. See it - you won't be disappointed.
