: What kind of GPS do you have?

I've seen it on several threads through out but not on one simple thread on which GPS people are using. There is a thread on where people have it mounted but I thought maybe we could get a consensus on brand, model and location of mounting. I know some have a windshield mount and to me, thats just too far away to be used by anyone sitting up front given the distance of the glass from the passengers. I'm wondering if anyone has used the super suction-cup they come with to mount on the center bezel above the air vents and how that works for them over time. So, if you have a GPS Navi unit and I don't have it listed in the poll, post it in the thread and pics would be nice on how you installed it.

Knowing that the list of GPS's is long and distinquished, if you have a Motorola, Whistler, Lowrance, Megellan or Delorme, post it in the thread but mark other. Add some photos of what you have and how its mounted.

There are about 80 brands of GPS out there, so you obviously can't list 'em all, but you might want to consider adding to the choices Delorme, Lowrance, Magellan, Motorola, Trimble and Whistler. Or at least Delorme, Lowrance and Magellan.

I have an early Garmin. How early? It runs on coal gas and has a crank starter.

TomTom Go 510 mounted using the suction cup mount. It is mounted next to the driver's A-pillar. Not any issue at all reaching the screen to change a setting while driving. I can see the screen without issue as well. This location is actually closer than mounting on the top of the dash above the radio.

Mine is the Garmin 276C. It's not a dedicated road unit. It does road and sea charts.

It's mounted on a beanbag mount to the right of the steering wheel. You can just make it out in this Photo. It's In the Blue E, Not the Red one.

I use CoPilot software from ALK loaded onto my all-in-one PDA, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth device. I have it mounted using a Panavise mount. I also use the PDA as an MP3 (actually WMA) player hooked into the aux jack on the E. The Panavise puts it into easy reach and view.

The suction cup will stick to the bezel if you get the suction cup slightly wet first. Before I did that trick, it fell off the dashboard a couple of times.
It's better to install the adhesive disk provided and put the suction cup on that.
The disk has some very strong adhesive tape on the bottom to keep it in place. I have no idea if it will leave a permanent mark (adhesive residue or UV "shadow") but I don't really care either. It doesn't look bad and I plan to have my Element for a good long time. :)
As far as placement goes, I prefer the unit located right in front of me. That way I don't have to take my eyes off the road for very long when I am looking at it. I had no problem reaching it when it was on the bezel either.

I've an old, 4 years this year, Garmin Ique3600. Its brilliant.

Has never let me down, great for satnav and as a standalone GPS out of the vehicle. The only time I started to lose favour with it was when the battery started to die. Recently replaced it with a longer lasting one and it still goes strong.

It's installed on a homemade mount. Pieced together part of the original beanbag (fly off the dash) mount with a cheap cell phone suction mount. Then use an external antenna hidden under the rear roof trim.

I ended up going with the Garmin c550. Straight out of the box it was ready to go. I tried the Bluetooth thats built in and it works great with my razr v3. Over all, I think I'm going to be happy with the unit. Another thing I'm digging is that I can suction cup the mount right on the dash above the airvents without using the dash disc. I was worried about the paint but it looks like it will be OK with a firm grip too. Now, if I can get the center dash trim piece off or lifted enough to run the power cord under it and notch it where I'll have it go in behind and come back out at the AUX location and I'll be straight.

I stuck! I'll leave that way unless things change. I already have the Proclip for my iPod so it would be a matter of just getting the Garmin mount bracket but right now it looks like I'm good to go. I'm placing mine on the silver portion of that center piece at the top, just above the center vents so its in line with everything.

Mine works fine. In fact I just got it and had it inside setting it up with places I plan to travel to over the summer. I set the Bluetooth up and my wife happened to call. I wasn't expecting it but I hit answer and she came through loud and clear. The problem we had was there was a TV on not far from me and it was blowing her out in her car as she was talking to me. I turned it off and she heard me fine. Seems to be a good feature though I probably won't use it all the time. The Mp3 files that came with it with music files sound pretty good too. I plan to get a SD card for it and put a lot of my iPod stuff on it and that way I can plug into the AUX and have it play through the car sound system. I searched long and hard and I went with this c550 over the Nuvi 350 or 360. A lot more money for those. I got this new out the box for $437 with free shipping. I'm happy with it. Garmin has been in business for 18yrs compared to the others and like TomTom and others and I'm not knocking those others either but Garmin has been doing this for a long time so there has to be a good reason. Everyone I've talked to with Garmin, no matter what model, they love it and talk how good it is for them.

I've got an old one (about 4 years old) in the Element. It's a Garmin GPS-V. While it's not pretty, nor does it have a fancy touch screen, color, voice readout, etc., it is impact resistant, battery powered, water resistant, and very versatile for detaching and taking along on a hiking trip.

My wife has a Garmin i5 in her Mazda. It's a one purpose GPS (it doesn't have modes for boating, hiking, geo-caching, etc. but it is excellent for driving directions, with voice directions, a fully preloaded street-level map, 3D perspective view, and easy controls on the road.

I also have a Garmin V. Purpose bought one used just a few months ago. It's screen can rotate so that it can be held and viewed in the vertical or horizontal. I have two mounts, 1 a beanbag style vehicle mount so that I can take the unit from vehicle to vehicle, and I also have a bicycle mount for my mountain biking trips.

I looked at all the new stuff, but this is the last of the truly versatile, multi-purpose units made.

The small blue tooth ones don't offer much compared to the standard GPS systems. We bought a Garmin Nuvi 200 at Best Buy for $199 in early Dec. Works great, and a sign at the store says for $39 Best Buy will install a dedicated power connection for it, so it doesn't need to use the aux. power port. Or you can get a aux. port splitter, that plugs in a 2 or 3 outlet bar in the car's single port.

I've had two hand-me-downs.

1. Alpine BlackBird - Total piece of overpriced crap.

2. Magellan Nav (not sure which version) - But I know my dad originally picked it up from a truck stop for like $120. It works great, and there is also a reset button on the side you can hit if the unit freezes up. It boots up fresh (favorites and settings are not re-set). I've only had to use the re-set button twice over the last 6 months. But it worked like a charm, just like the unit itself.

I guess that's a matter of opinion, like that the Element's with painted panels aren't REAL Element. :D

I lived kinda out in the boonies, and of the three KNOWN GPS devices used to get to our place, one Garmin claimed the street didn't exist, one Garmin got my father in law stuck in the mud using a "road" that was nothing more than a trampled down short cut the drunks use and my TomTom that got me home.

I got a Garmin 750 last year for Christmas. Maps needed updating and I didn't want to pay $70 for the update, so I put it on ebay and bought a new 255W. The 255 is a cheaper unit than what the (discontinued) 750 was, but seems to work better. I think it has a faster processor. The 750 is up to $90 on ebay now. I hope it gets high enough to pay for my new one that I got at Sam's for $129.

Nice MKH, how well does the I phone work with the GPS from tom tom?

Really good. Better than my old Nuvi 200, spoken city and street names, and pick the right lane (which I really like). Has IQ routes too - which is where Tom Tom lets you know traffic conditions ahead by "watching" other Tom Tom GPS units in the area for slow-downs, etc.

They have a a nice car-kit mount with a built-in GPS chip to boost signal, but they are a little too proud of those right now. Waiting to see if the price comes down any at discounters.

The 296 has an auto selection that is basic but you can upgrade it to have all the features but it costs more then just buying one that is made for autos.

Well I decided to purchase the Garmin nuvi 765T a bit earlier than expected and I received it yesterday morning.8) It's quite nice,I like it.:-) I also ordered the billet aluminum ball mount from fellow member e4u2c and received it yesterday morning too.I highly recommend the billet mount,it's a super nice piece.I'm waiting on my external microphone to get here so I can finish up my clean install.I'll post some pics when I'm finished.;-)

^^Since the plug couldn't be safely disassembled,I had to cut that hole to pass the plug through. That's OK,because it can't even be seen once the cradle and GPS unit is in place.

Very nice! I guess from the EwwE's pics, it's safe to drill in that area.
I might try something in a Velcro - no sharp tools!

Very nice! That came out real well.

Question: Any obstruction from your steering wheel at that location?

Velcro would be good for a temporary mount, but if you want a clean looking install without any wires showing,drilling/cutting holes is really the best option. As you can tell,I don't mind drilling and cutting on my E' Anyway,it doesn't really cost much to replace that entire piece.

Nope...from my seating position there's no obstructions at all,it's very easy to view, use and remove in that location.I highly recommend mounting a GPS in that spot.8)

Oh and whenever I finish installing the external microphone for the Bluetooth on this unit,I'll post some pics of that too.;-)

Nice! I'll have to consider this mod. It might free up that space besides the radio for my iPhone. Sweet!

Just a head's up for i-phone users. Just got "MotionX GPS Drive" for the i-phone. Had the Tom-Tom for i-phone and it's car mount kit, but the mount kept breaking (would not stay in landscape) and without the mount with it's additional chip, the lag on voice directions was too much. Would be telling me to turn when I was already almost past the turn, so two mounts later sent it all back, and got AMEX to refund me on the App. as well. Was going to go back to my old Garmin Nuvi, but found the MotionX GPS Drive App. Not full featured (yet) but each update they seem to makes big leaps forward in features. Unique approach. The app itself is a whopping 99 cents, and you cache maps as needed from their database - so no bloated App on your i-phone eating up space (you control the size of your cache). They provide 30 days of free Live Voice guidance, with predicative live traffic routing from TrafficCast (where available), then you can pay by the month or year for that. $2.99 month by month, or $24 a year, which is way, way less than Garmin wants for traffic and updates (my Garmin is way out of date - map wise now and they want $70 to update it). The MotionX Seems to really work nicely with the i-phone's features, instead of just adding a standard gps on top of the hardware.

Will be adding a Kensington Acoustic Amplified GPS Mount for it from Amazon this week.

So far, I'm impressed with the features it has for the price. Check it out.

They also have MotionX-GPS for cross-country, biking, camping, hiking, triathlon, which is like a hand-held topo gps (pretty cool looking) - don't confuse the two :-)

Basic mount, works well - no problem with reception, CA legal, doesn't block access to anything - 10 minute install.

TomTom 720, mounted in Panavise #751171003 w/ Arkon APTTGO-VSM. The Panavise part # is only listed up to 2009, but unsurprisingly it fits a 2010 fine. With the appropriate Arkon adaptor, I'm sure any of the Nuvi's would work equally well - they're close enough in size to the TomTom 720.

The Panavise instructions mention a little trimming to the bezel "might be necessary". It does bulge slightly where the mount comes out, but it's tough to notice - particularly with the GPS in place. I'd rather live with the bulge I don't notice, and be able to revert to stock if I decide to remove the mount for any reason.

Hey guys here's my updated Garmin 765T installs pics with the external Bluetooth microphone.:-)

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2520/1000504f.jpg
^^Here's the hole I cut for the microphone to pass through.Notice I used grommets to prevent chafing of the wires.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3509/1000506x.jpg

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/7817/1000832p.jpg
^^I removed the previous washer and replaced it with a serrated star washer, which works much better at keeping the mount nice and tight,as it digs/grabs into the plastic.

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/747/mic1.jpg

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5917/1000852.jpg
^^Here's where I mounted the microphone.

I trimmed that opening slit where the wire is passing through,so it wouldn't pinch the wire. The mic. seems to work great for me in that location and it's out of view, plus I'd probably have to actually point it out for one to even notice it.8)

Oh and for others who may have missed my original post from this same thread, here you go.;-)
