: rough idle.
OFFROADTRAVELER 07-29-2003, 10:06 AM hey guys, my element has 11,000 miles it was bought at the end of january.
recently , last week, i've noticed the exaust pipe shaking during idle. when i opened the hood the enginge had a moderate shake to it. is this a norm?
this happens when normal operating temp is reached.
thanx.

georgeyew 07-29-2003, 10:31 AM Sorry to hear about the rough idle. It could be several thing (e.g. spark plug, fuel quality, fuel injectors). I suggest that you take it into your dealer and let them take a look at it. Or run a bottle of Redline SL-1 in the gas to see if it helps. You can get the Redline at Pep Boys. Hope that your E feels better.
OFFROADTRAVELER 07-29-2003, 11:17 AM georgeyew, thanx for the tip, i'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning and see what they say.
elementarywatson 08-03-2003, 03:24 PM I have the same problem. I took it to my dealership last Friday and mentioned a rough idle as the problem. Well, all they did was some adjustments to the exhaust hangers and obviously never popped the hood or they would have seen the engine shaking also. I'll take it back Monday and let you know what happened. SSM EX.
If I remember correctly the Element should be equipped with liquid filled motor mounts that should cushion almost all the vibration the engine produces.
The only other reason that could be possible that could cause vibration could be that the balance shafts are not timed properly or off phase? Do the RPMS fluctuate at idle?, Does the vibration become more apparent at higher rpms?
OFFROADTRAVELER 08-04-2003, 02:07 PM the rpms don't fluctuate and you really can't feel anything wrong while inside the car, those mounts really do their job, but once you look at the tail pipe and at the engine you see the vibration.
i saw an E this morning and also noticed a small vibe in the tale pipe. i'm starting to think that this vibe might be normal for this engine.
thanx :?
firetruck41 08-04-2003, 02:31 PM All engines vibrate, the purpose of the mounts is to isolate it from the rest of the car, the exhaust is attached directly to the engine and is hung on rubber mounts which also isolate it's vibrations from the rest of the car. If it is not excessive, then it is probably normal.
OFFROADTRAVELER 08-04-2003, 05:16 PM firetruck,
thanx for the info.
elementarywatson 08-05-2003, 05:18 PM I brought my Element to the dealership about the shaking tailpipe and the response was that it is normal with the 4 cyl engines. I think mine is excessive at times. When I pop the hood the engine is shaking a lot. I'll try to ignore it for awhile.
elementarywatson 08-14-2003, 08:47 AM Well I finally got the dealership to look under the hood at the shaking engine instead of just looking at the tailpipe. They agreed that the idle was rough. They disconnected the battery and did an idle relearn, it is again very smooth and no exhaust shake.
casino 08-14-2003, 12:29 PM so there's a normal tail-pipe-wiggle right?
elementarywatson 08-14-2003, 12:49 PM But of course there is. Very moderate now though. I always wanted to add a stainless steel exhaust tip but couldn't with all the shaking. It would have looked like a flashing light.
E_by_gum 07-01-2005, 11:16 AM Hi guys.
My E is a brand new 2005 EX 5speed. I have noticed the tailpipe vibration since the first time I followed the E when my wife was driving it. Didn't think anything of it, but maybe I'll get my dealer to do the idle relearn procedure as suggested on this thread. However, I was giving the car her first proper interior cleaning today and had her running while I was working with all the doors open. So - question...
Along with the slight/moderate vibration at idle, I can also hear what I think is a gentle 'popping' noise - SEPARATE from the noise of the vibration. I am a complete mechanical waste of space and have no idea if this is normal or not....
Thanks!
