: Where to position my GPS?

The Element's winshield is about 1/2 mile away from the driving position. So I'm thinking about getting a dash mount, but then am worried that there is no light of sight with the sky (if that matters).

Just curious how others have incorporated their windshield mount and/or smaller sized GPS units. I have a Tom Tom GO.

Hello Nopinch, I have my tomtom go 700 mounted right over the radio, with the suction cup mount I exper imented with several spots including the left corner. I found over the radio worked best for driving, reading, manipulating it- I'm right handed and can see right over it.

Good luck

It is having a hard time finding satellites at dark however...
Don't know if that's a positioning thing or not..

Interesting. I haven't noticed any p.m. problems with mine.

i think over the radio is an ideal location because of the smooth plastic. i don't believe you will have any problem with the satellite signal because no one has really mentioned it. plus a lot of the new GPS units use a technology that helps them "remember" where they are for periods of time in case of signal loss.

if i remember correct someone on here may have mounted it directly in front of them. and someone else (drpheta??) made a mount on the dash just right of the steering wheel. and others have put it on the left on the top of the dash.

in the end, you shouldn't have a problem losing the signal so you can put it where you feel comfortable w/ the suction cup.

Line of sight does not really matter.

If you are tall enough, (I am 6' 3") you can put it right in front of you like I did. I think it's perfect there because you don't have to take your eyes off the road for very long to take a look at it.

I recently purchased a TomTom One. Super little GPS...very sensitive receiver. The thing pulls in signal when I turn it on inside the house. Easy menus and intuitive logic. The trouble is the factory mount with (non-actuated) suction cup. The suction cup sucks because it doesn't suck for very long. Half hour is the longest I've experienced. Makes the factory mount worthless. TomTom is sending a replacement...should be here in 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, I've investigated alternatives...anyway

I've been experimenting with various locations and I'm not happy with top-o-dash or windshield areas due to blocking my view (5'6''). Found this great manufacturer web site -

Ram Mounts: http://www.ram-mount.com/ramgps.htm

They have mounts for everything! I'm going with a snakey one that will bolt to the passenger seat anchor...and it's going to hold the GPS, cell phone, and iPod in a cluster mount. Sweet...

Received most of the parts for my custom GPS mounting system. RAM Mount vendor in Las Vegas designed system for me, however, left out two critical parts and machine screws & stop nuts (supposed to be included) needed to make it all work. When I called back to complain and order the omitted parts, vendor refused to comp the unnecessary shipping charges and wanted to charge for screws & nuts (!?!). Not very good customer service at Expressmounts.com - beware. Ordering remaining parts from a different vendor in Arizona and p/u the needed screws & nuts at OSH Hardware. Here is a picture of the mounting platform that I can't attach to the snake mount yet.

I use a bean bag mount with a Garmin 2730. I place it on the dash in front of me and I place it on digital speedo mode after I program in my destination. Since it is a digital speedo too, I don't have to look down at the standard speedo, which I can't see anyway through the steering wheel. My speed is displayed right in front of me. I also use it just as a digital speedo when I don't need the navi unit.

The Garmin will automatically switch back and forth between a digital speedo and a navi unit when it gives directions so the map is in front of you when you need it.
