So, this isn't an Element question specifically, as I'm perfectly satisfied with the XM CD head unit that came with my Element.
However...
My wife has a Mazda5, and while we have an XM receiver mounted on the dash, we'd like to be able to replace it with an aftermarket in-dash XM receiver. The issue that could prove to be the determining factor is the possible loss of the steering wheel audio controls. Is there any way to use an aftermarket head unit and not lose the wheel controls? They've turned out to be those features that leave one quite spoiled!
