: Need to replace the Wranglers fast, looking for suggestions
Derezzed 05-03-2007, 10:21 AM They have about 50K miles in about 3 years and I need to get them replaced to pass inspection. The dealer is asking $660 for 4 new tires (hell, no!) so I am shopping around.
I'm looking to pay much less than that for 4 tires.
I don't go offroading.
I live in the NE so we get snow and I am looking at these for all-season use.
I do a lot of highway driving to and from work every day.
I checked Tire Rack and the 3 most popular that are all-season are:
Avon
Ranger TSE
$74.00
Bridgestone
Dueler H/L Alenza
$125.00
Yokohama
Geolandar H/T-S G051
$81.00
All 3 got good ratings from consumers who purchased them. I am leaning towards the Avons for 2 reasons: They are the cheapest and they got a Consumer's Digest Best Buy award.
Suggestions? Anyone familiar with these 3?
macmini05 05-03-2007, 11:20 AM Don't get the Bridgestones! My CRV ( when it was new ) had the Duelers on it and they sucked. I live in Michigan and am exposed to all 4 seasons of weather here. The traction was not good at all. I replaced them with less than 30,000 on them.
After doing some research ( Tire Rack was one ) I purchased the Michelin Harmonys. They were $100.00 more than a set of Kellys, but the traction is way better. A bonus was that the CRV rides much quieter now too!
FYI - I have had good luck with Kelly also. Good tires at a good price.......:-D

50K...are you sure? The Wrangler bashers here will find this very interesting. Me personally, I got no problem with the Wranglers. :)
mid"E" 05-03-2007, 01:50 PM Spend the extra money and you will get yourself a quality,long-wearing,well-handling and quiet riding tire.
The Michelin LTX M/S.Super!:D
Derezzed 05-03-2007, 02:39 PM I will be honest, I didn't feel comfotable with the tires in the rain (at least as confortable as I should have). For the price, they should have performed better, I think.
Twilightzero 05-03-2007, 02:39 PM As a Geo rider, I'll stand 200% behind the Geolandars. They're a GREAT tire at a great price. They're one of the best handling SUV tires I've ever seen and because the E's so light (SUV-wise), you can get some really long wear out of them. They handle MN weather like a breeze also :D

It's much debated here that the stock Wranglers are absolutely horrid in the rain. There are those who have no problem with them at all but there are also a large number of people who think they're absolutely awful.

These are what I have I love them. They are not crap they are the tires that most of the Firestone workers have on there car. That shoudl say something.
Also they are ranked #2 in there category according to Rackwarehouse.com
THEY ARE GREAT!! I too live in Michigan....
Derezzed 05-03-2007, 02:58 PM Are the GeoLanders good for highway driving? They seem good in the snow and rain, but I don't want them wearing too fast. Also, I am guessing they are a bit on the noisy side. Not a huge problem, but I'm just wondering.
Twilightzero 05-03-2007, 03:00 PM I drive tons of highway on the Geos. Great for highway, I haven't noticed a noise problem at all. The Element is a higher noise vehicle overall than many, so the Geolandars just get lost in it :) I have over 30K highway on mine now and they look basically brand new.

The reason Firestone workers have them is because the are part of Firestone.

I had them for over three years. Went to the Michelin and noticed a world of difference in handling and noise. Many people that had them stock say this also. Search at sites where they rate and sell them. Most people, not all ( as with anything ), do not like them.

The O.E. Dueler (model D864 ?) Honda used on the CR-V is a different tire than the Dueler H/L Alenza.

Hydroplaned twice in one day on the highway doing 40 mph... bad. 2nd time almost literally smashed into the center divider with the stock tires. 19k miles. I'm surprised that you got ~50k out of them! Who knows, maybe there was a string of good ones or bad ones or whatever... either way they were horrible tires on my E.
I have heard great things about the yokohama geolanders. Did you check out http://www.tirerack.com? Lots of customer reviews there concerning different aspects of tires. IMO its a great site if you haven't checked it out yet. Also a nice place to buy tires from : )~
cfbales 05-03-2007, 10:14 PM We put the GeoLanders on my kid's car and love them. I put hers on my car while she's been out of the country for a few months and I now plan on buying another set of the GeoLanders for my car; I love them!

Tirerack.com is where I got my Geos :D Great to do business with them, I even picked up a set of closeout nice alloy rims from them and they mounted & balanced them for free, so all I had to do when they arrived was jack up the car & swap the wheels. Go me for the cheap win!

After a lot of research I decided to get the larger 225s for my E. They handle the road perfectly and I've had no problems driving through flooded streets (something that happens a lot here). These tires perform like superstars. HOWEVER, on the Houston highways they are obnoxiously LOUD!!!! Really really loud! Louder than the stock tires. Something to consider if you drive a lot of highway miles down here.

The larger than stock size is probably the culprit. I run the LTXs in stock size and find them much quieter than the Wranglers.
mid"E" 05-08-2007, 08:47 AM I also have the stock size LTX and they are very quiet on the highway.Smooth and comfortable ride.
Derezzed 05-08-2007, 10:04 AM Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I ended up going with the Geolanders. They should be here today and on the car this week.
Twilightzero 05-08-2007, 02:31 PM Gratz for you, you have to let us know your opinion :) One thing's for sure - whatever you get, you'll definitely like them better than the stocks Wranglers ;-)
Blank 05-08-2007, 03:24 PM Anyone have opinions on some BFG Radial Long Trails T/A? I getting some 225/70 this week.

I had them on my first E for about 3 days. They were HORRIBLE - the slightest bit of drizzle and I'd lose traction. Just starting out from a stop sign I could feel all 4 wheels chatter trying to get grip. I sold them right away and got my Geos instead.

They were on my list of tires to consider because of their reasonable price, but fell off fairly quickly when I determined their forte is ultra-high mileage. High mileage usually means hard tread compound, and not-so-sticky for handling.
My local Discount Tire dealer also steered me away from some popular brands and models that produced frequent complaints of out-of-round and high noise, but it's been over a year, so I don't remember which they were, but they're among the more popular choices here on the forum. :-o
When I went shopping, I was already leaning toward the Pirelli's I ended up with, but my guy at Discount Tire had no inkling of that. Initially, I'd been hoping so find an equivalent at a lower price, but was happy to discover that what I ended up with was within $5.00 of any other tire I might have chosen.
I have no idea why Pirelli declines to advertise as heavily in the American market as most other tire brands do. Perhaps they sell enough tires in Europe? However, I'm a rabid fan of my Scorpion ATR's, and would as readily buy them in a closer-to-stock size as the gonzo-sized ones I actually chose. I will definitely be a repeat Pirelli customer!
Twilightzero 05-08-2007, 08:05 PM I've heard a lot of people say good things about Pirellis. Sometime when we manage to go the same direction again we'll have to take each other's E's for a quick spin, I'd be really curious how well they handle :)

I have not used them but I plan on buying a set within the next few months. Please let me know how you like them, and if they have any effect on your gas mileage.
They have good reviews on the tirerack and discounttire websites, and did pretty well in the Consumer Reports testing.
Not sure if I will end up buying from Sam's or Discount Tire.

As I said above, I'd say avoid them if possible. They're great tires no doubt, but they're EXTREMELY hard rubber for extra long wear and they're better suited for a heavier vehicle. Most of the vehicles that these tires were designed for are large SUV's that are 1000+ pounds heavier curb weight than the poor little E.

I can't resist! Thanks for giving your input, since I do take your opinion more seriously than the folks who write those reviews...
I'd love to have some Michelin CrossTerrains but can't justify the expense...

Two of my four Hondas ('99 Ody & '91 Accord) have Michelin Hydroedges with 90,000 wear warranty. The other two ('05 CR-V & '07 Element) will get them as soon as they need new shoes. I will be done buying 'shoes' for a long time... The run quiet, track well and last long, pulling reasonably well in snow too.... When one calculates over a 90,000 mile life, they are actually a bargain.
Marc E. Nich 05-19-2007, 08:23 AM I put the Michelin LTX's on my awd E late last summer and they have been great. I live in Toronto and had no problems with snow, rain or the odd farm road/ field when i visit freinds north of the city.
