: Puppy Teething -- what do you do?
hiker chick 05-24-2007, 02:35 PM A friend of mine has a 4-month old collie puppy who is presently teething and I'm curious what the EOC Dog Peops recommend to alleviate teething discomfort.
If anything.
My only memories of Gidget's teething stage are the three left black pumps she destroyed. I still have the rights.
bh241 05-24-2007, 02:47 PM Couple of things pop to mind. First try taking a wet washrag and freezing it in the freezer. (seriously) Then let the pup have at it. It helps numb the pain.
If it's just the 'chewing' then I would go with a rawhide chew.
NighthawkStella 05-24-2007, 02:52 PM When Cooper was teething, he loved to chew on ice cubes as well as the Puppy Kong. I would fill it with water and freeze it. He'd munch on that for quite a while.
damn, that was a lot of work, but he was so cute!
HuskyDo 05-24-2007, 02:53 PM I used a Kong toy for Mishka when he was teething. I also had it in the crate with him when I left to go out (so it was the only thing he could get at) - this, and the positive (good boy's) when he went for the Kong instead of the shoes kept non-productive teething to a minimum.
The Kong itself was one of those 'ribbed' ones - apparently they help massage the gums. But any other Kong type toy should work.
Elemen-O-P 05-24-2007, 04:23 PM Wow...I'm glad someone brought this up...I've been concerned over this with our now 10 week old Zoe... I'll have to try some of these out!! I especially like the Kong idea..I think those things are just too cool to begin with!!

I gave my dog cold baby carrots
shawn.chris 05-24-2007, 05:56 PM Freeze carrots, apples, old socks with ice chunks or sticks. I also let my dog chew on water bottles, with a puppy watch the lids.
Because it is a puppy all chewing should be watched.
IbElement 05-25-2007, 05:17 PM I suggest not giving anything you don't want the puppy to chew on as an adult and avoid things that can be easily torn apart and swallowed. My favorite teething chew is a raw, frozen knuckle bone. (Don't use cooked bone, they'll splinter.)
cai88 05-25-2007, 05:44 PM We did frozen carrots for Bella. She loved them.
Cold Kongs stuffed with treats and peanut butter always seem to work. Our last puppy went crazy for an empty ozarka water bottle (sans wrapper) . It makes a crazy amount of noise, they could not really bite it (Toy Poodle) as it would "pop" away from them. Sure kept her busy.
lizzurd 05-26-2007, 10:10 AM We wouldnt have made it the first month with out kong.....given the choice of kong or my leg thankfully iggy like kong better.

Cute pup...i wish mine could have stayed that size......He's 9 months old and pushing a hundred pounds already.
Hondamade4dogs 05-26-2007, 10:18 AM Dogs love to chew.. Puppies need toys made of rubber. Kong makes good lasting toys...:D

HOLY CRAP!!! Well, if genetics has anything to do with it, our Zoe is gonna be a biggun too. Father (Ali's Golden Prince...aka: Roscoe) is 110lbs and Mother (Ginger-Belle Jones...aka: Belle) is around 90lbs....
...just went and weighed myself, then myself with her...and she's 20lbs!! That means, 7lbs in less than 3 weeks!!!
monza 05-27-2007, 01:55 PM my suggestion is cold or frozen baby carrots...or my dog's favourite...
a frozen kong filled with peanut butter and plain yogurt. especially with the summer soon approaching they will love it!
good luck!

You can make kong-cicles too! Stuff it with wet food, cheese, gravy, all sorts of stuff (there's recipes online), and freeze it, and you keep a puppy from being bored, and alleviate the teething for awhile :)
edlentz 05-28-2007, 07:54 AM Call me old fashioned. We used the frozen rag for awhile and then we got a smoked femor (cow) bone. The bone lasts forever and our Malamute loves it.
SoleilBxrBx 05-28-2007, 10:15 AM bully sticks have always been good for us. pups and adults alike thoroughly enjoyed them.
