: HEEEEELP MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! (gas mileage)
cbastriani 08-07-2003, 12:26 AM Im only gettin like 200-210 miles per tank its about 100 miles roundtrip for me for work. Once i get back home ive got about a half a tank of gas left. This sounds HORRIBLE to me. Shouldnt i be gettin like 350 or something? PLEASE help!!!!
sean010101 08-07-2003, 12:57 AM you got 2wd or 4? you drive with the air on? check the air in your tires? whats you driving style? how many miles you have on the car?
cbastriani 08-07-2003, 01:46 AM Its the EX with the optional (dynamic) 4wd, its 3 weeks old, the tire air is fine. I drive highway 70 mph with air normally on. theres 1475 miles on the car as of now. 200 - 210 mpt seems bad for any conditions.
Berniesgirl 08-07-2003, 06:58 AM I have 4wd and have a little over 1000 miles on my E, about 4 weeks old. I seem to be getting almost 300 miles per tank and I do a lot of stop and go and short around the area trips. Haven't taken it on a longer highway drive yet. Oh and I seem to have the air on most of the time. I'll be taking it on the highway next weekend for a road trip.
humphrey 08-07-2003, 07:33 AM Give it some time yet  . I didn't start to get decent mileage until after 2k miles.

Rich Currier 08-07-2003, 10:26 AM I just went over 3k miles. My last tank of gas took me 350 miles before the light went on. I filled it up at 380 & my average was just over 27mpg. I also had the A/C on at least half the time. My average has fluctuated from 24 to 27 since I bought it. Your mileage does sound a bit low.
za9ra22 08-07-2003, 10:37 AM Whether 200 or so miles per tank is bad or not really depends on how many gallons you're putting in when you fill up again, because that's how much you've used to cover those miles. At 70mph with no really agressive driving and the air on, I'm getting 280-310 miles from 'full' to the low fuel warning, and typically about 12-13 gallons will fill it back up again - giving something around 23 or 24mpg. (It worsens significantly over maybe 80mph).
My E has almost 8,000 miles on it and has always returned pretty much the same mileage figures.
switters 08-07-2003, 11:40 AM i just turned 2500 miles and have stayed consistently around the 23-25 mpg mark. my driving is probably 70/30 highway/city. i'm in north carolina so the a/c is has not been turned off since i got the e.
i've been very surprised by the wide-ranging mpg numbers posted in the forum.
as crazy as it sounds, i have the feeling that the gas gauge calibration is weird in mine. it does seem to move from full to low fuel light pretty quickly but then i am usually only putting in 10-12 gallons once the light comes on.
when you calculate your actual mpg, what are you getting?
EforMe 08-07-2003, 11:45 AM 200-210 miles sounds low for a tank. I have gotten around that only when driving mostly in town and the AC on (live in NC and the AC is on all the time). On the hwy I have been getting 21-24 mpg driving about 70. If you push it to 80 you will see your mileage drop off significantly. I usually drive until the light comes on and it takes 11-12 gallons to fill.
dracki 08-07-2003, 11:48 AM Hi-
Just passed 5K on my month old DX 4WD Automatic. I Live in the mountains and because the outside temp. can reach 100f, I drive MaxAired all of the time. I drive with a roof rack, side steps, splash guards, bra, and fog lights and a lead foot.
Been recently getting about 25 mpg. When I am flatlanding it I use the cruise control then I do a bit better.
It is all about getting to know your vehicle and it getting to know you. You must become one with your machine: It will be a reflection of you and you will become a refelection of it. It will then become an extension of your personality and driving habits.
Listen to the engine as it revs through the gears if you have a standard tranny. Don't dog it or strain it. Seek a perfect attitude.Pay attention to the tachometer with an automatic tranny. Don't over rev in any gear. Avoid jack rabbit starts. Work the accelerator like a fine instrument. Keep a constant foward momentum when possible. When going through a curve, attain the appropriate approach speed before entering the curve and if needed, accelerate smoothly through the curve. When approaching a steep up-hill grade, get up enough speed to smoothly overcome the forces trying to pull you backwards. Just before the crest, back off of the accelerator a bit and effortlesly sail over the top. Let gravity take you downgrade as far as possible before you use the accelerator to remain competitive in traffic.
With the proper driving techniques, you can squeeze every mile out of a tank of gas!
From a technological point of view, I think after you put some more breaking-in miles on your Element, your fuel economy may improve.
Good Luck

YOU MUST CALCULATE THE MILEAGE, YOU CAN NOT GO BY "MILES PER TANK", THE GAUGE IS NOT CALIBRATED, EVERY INDIVIDUAL CAR GAUGE WILL BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT. I am beginning to not believe any "bad gas mileage" claims until I see true MPG figures.
I have the same problem. My low gas light came on at 192 and I filled up at 200. The car took 14 gallons of gas which is less than 15 mpg. At 800 miles, each tank seems to yield less mpg than the last. Called the dealership and they tell me to wait a few more tanks and see if it starts going up...
I wouldn't mind if it was even close to 20/21 which is what I got on the last car. But this is ridiculous!
Simon 08-09-2003, 01:30 AM Something is wrong! Less than 15 MPG !
Do you drive 85 MPH? If not, I would monitor gas consumption extremely close and document it... and then take it back in..
I'm getting 23 MPG. I would worry that your transmission or something in the drivetrain is off.... Miles per gallon may be the least of your problems.. basically a symptom of the problem.
HEMan 08-09-2003, 05:25 PM I'm another NC resident and drive with the A/C on all the time. My E has 1500 miles and I am getting about 24 mpg. As others have said, miles per tank is not a true measure. You must measure your gas mileage to get a true read. Also, you must do that over several tank fulls to get an accurate measure.
nicolaasdb 08-11-2003, 07:04 PM I just bought mine AWD EX 3 weeks ago and have driven about 900 miles and the milage is terrible..and I calculated it 16.6 miles per gallon!!! I am bringing my car back tomorrow because the drivers seat is rocking!!! and I will mention it, because I read on the sticker it should be about 21-24 miles per gallon. I drive mixed highway and city (NYC) and it has been hot so the air was on, but should this reduce the mileage over 5 mpg??
Let me know and I will let you guys know what the dealer has to say tomorrow!
Kayakin' Dan 08-12-2003, 03:34 AM I drive 80/20, city/highway and have 7300 miles. At the beginning I was getting 25-27mpg and somewhere between 23-25 mpg now that the air is on non-stop, since about June 1st.
sspiller 08-12-2003, 09:36 PM Had my E for 3 months (5700 miles), got 24MPG first tank which seemed to be because I kept it below 3000 rpm (<65mph) during the break in, get 22/23MPG for regular driving, 75% HWY doing about 75 mph (AC on most of the time), got 21MPG towing my 14' boston whaler rage jet boat... not sure how people are getting 26-29MPG unless they drive REAL slow.
ullanta 08-15-2003, 03:53 PM Just some additional data... I've carefully tracked my mileage over the last 6,000 miles or so for my 2WD EX Auto...
Overall average is 22.5 MPG, for a 20 mile each-way commute, of which most is free (~70MPH) but the last 2 miles home often has heavy traffic (say, 15 minutes for the last two miles), often with AC. My "per-tank" average has ranged from 21.3 to 24.2 MPG, the higher ones correlated with long highway trips.
A little less than I expected... but not too far off.
sspiller 08-15-2003, 04:09 PM I just put the front tires at 34 PSI and the rears at 36 PSI, it "feels" like it rolls better (who knows) but it will be interesting to see if mileage improves, would love to be getting the 28-29 some people are claiming to get... maybe they are the ones in the middle lane doing 55 MPH (nah, can't be, they wouldn't be driving an E!)
Moclair 08-15-2003, 04:34 PM I'm drive somewhat conservatively and have not used the AC much at all, use the cruise, and the E has been getting between 24.5 and 26.5 mpg.I drive approximately 60/40 highway/ city . After driving a truck that maxed out at 16mpg, I'm tickled that the milage has been better than rated. So much for the mpg ratings! If I was getting the milage that some folks appear to be getting, I'd be really disappointed. I amazed at the range of reported milage so it makes me wonder abouy how driving styles can really affect the milage or the milage is being miscalculated.
Good Luck
Moclair w/ an E! [/u]
pcoleton 09-23-2003, 10:54 AM Just got mine and it has 250 miles on it. I'm getting 15-17mpg and I really hope it gets better. I drive sanely and don't use the a/c much, usually just me in the E....with the big-E as my co-pilot of course.
Thankyaverymuch

Of course I agree with that, however, last night I got 237 miles and it took 11.71 gallons to fill it all the way back up (and yes, it was totally full before the 237 miles.) That is, without question 20.4 MPG, which I am quite honestly a little disappointed with. My E just passed 2000 miles and I am hoping it gets a tad better. I will say that I had a couple "tanks" (by which I mean 13 to 13.5 gallon fillups) that were at the 200 to 210 mile range which is quite poor, but I believe that was before the engine started loosening up a bit.
I was also suprised that the Manual E's are expected to do worse than the Automatics, although I'd pump 6 gallons of gas on the ground every time I fill up before I'd ever buy an auto. [OK environmentalists...that was sarcasm, I would never do such a thing!]
I have never had a Honda that achieves the expected mileage numbers...I am just hoping it gets a tad better as it breaks in. It really doesn't help that the price of gas jumped the same week I picked mine up. ...at least it doesn't need premium like 2 of my last 3 VTECs!
bwojc3 09-24-2003, 09:32 AM We just took a trip to PA so we had a chance to put on some continuous highway miles, which is pretty rare for us since we live in NYC. Between two fill-ups, we went 234 miles and used 8.5 gallons, which works out to 27.5 mpg. It was all highway with the cruise set between 65 and 70, A/C on, with two adults and one kid on board. I thought this was a pretty good result. However, like the commercials say, your mileage may vary. In all city driving with heavy traffic, mpg drops to around 15-17, which is way below the EPA number.
Forgot to mention that we have a 2WD EX with automatic.
lae10851 10-01-2003, 09:23 PM Are we talking watered down gas here or what? I have AWD, EX AT and only about 900 miles and I have been getting right around 25 mpg out of Chevron.
