I just received a private message from an EOC member who is having problems wiring up his DVD player by tapping into the front ceiling light. I am posting my reply as it may help others.
I am looking at Page 114-2 of the Honda Element Electronic Troubleshooting Guide. There are two sources of power to the front (and rear) ceiling lights. There is only one circuit to the two spots located on the ceiling console of the EX.
1. The white/blue runs from the Fuse 3 of the under-hood Fuse/Relay Box. This is used to provide power to the light when the switch is set to on and the doors are closed.
2. The green/red are power from the Multi-plexor Control Unit (MCU). This is used to provide power to the light when a door or the rear hatch is open.
I think the problem is that you should NOT tap into the MCU circuit. By tapping into this circuit, the MCU thinks that the circuit should be energized causing the dome lights to be on. The DVD player most likely is always be calling for current, and is definitely is calling for power, if there is a remote control.
Based on the schematic, I would tap into the white/blue power. The white/blue on this circuit powers both the front and rear ceiling lights in all models plus the two spots in the EX. However, there is only a 7.5 amp fuse on this circuit.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the DVD player does not require a circuit greater than 7.5 amps. If it calls for 7.5 amp circuit and you turn multiple lights are on while the DVD player is running, you might blow a fuse.
