So you folks in California probably heard about this but I thought the EOC would enjoy this story !

A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner
Summit, Truckee) on Saturday Sept 15th when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge.
Somehow thebear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety.
At one point the bear tested its ability to climb down by lowering its feet down the side but decided against that idea and pulled itself back up! Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into
the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net.

I used to live there; Donner Summit / Soda Springs for 9 years and traveled "Old Hwy 40" only 6 months of each year. (they don't plow it). It's an incredibly historic area, beside the bridge are the RR tunnels dug out by the Chinese Laborers, below the bridge is the old Stage Coach road and of course we all know the story of the Settlers who couldn't get over the Pass in the Winter and dug up their dead to survive (The Donner Party).

Thanks for letting me share that with you.

That's unbelievable that he caught himself on the edge and then pulled himself up onto the bridge.

I'm glad this bear tale had a happy ending.
:)

Thanks for posting.

GREAT Story! I'm glad it had a happy ending. What a smart bear to have realized that he couldn't lower himself down.

Thanks OrangeE for the story!
