I ordered a new head unit and component speakers from Crutchfield. I've got a 2007 LX with four speakers.
a) Does anyone know if the space in the pillars are prewired on the LX?
b) How difficult is it get in there, special tools and what not?
c) What about the curtain airbags that are in there, I don't want to accidentaly deploy them or render then inoperable.
I know this has probably been discussed, but I haven't been able to find with the search funtion.
Thanks in advance for any advice, you guys are great!

I have the same 07 LX. The pillars are NOT pre-wired for the speakers. That being said, it's not too hard to get wires up in there, especially from the door speaker wells. You'll definitely want a copy of the owner's manual though, as some of the parts don't come out/go back in in obvious ways.
However, it also very heavily depends on what speakers you got for your E. I went with Infinity 6022si component speakers and I found that leaving the tweeters in the door pod with the +3db switch on makes them PLENTY loud, almost to the point of shrill. Certainly no need to run the extra wiring up there to get more sound!
Although I've been tempted to mount a set of little cube speakers up there...
As far as getting the wiring up, basically take off the A pillar trim, take off the door interior trim/cover, and you essentially push a coat hanger with the wire up through the rubber accordion wiring cover and directly into the A-pillar.
Hope that helps!

I was counting on the piller wells being wired. I bought some Polk component speakers online. They're 6 1/2" mid range with separate tweeters. I like the idea of the sound coming from the front and not down by my feet. I think that allows you to have better sound with less volume. I've had that set up in cars before the E and I really notice how muffled the stock four speaker system sounds. I'm also competing with my girlfriend's MINI cooper's stock Harmon Kardon system.
What about the side curtain air bags? I'm really paranoid about them...

Well the EX gets around the air bags, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Definitely get the shop manual, you'll be glad you did.
The stock speaker system in the LX absolutely sucks a$$. Any upgrade is a major improvement! I was going to relocate my tweeters to up on the A pillar but after I heard how bright they sounded where they are, I dropped that idea at least for the moment.

Ok, I assumed that the sound would be better in the A pillers. It seems to me from reading a few posts, that the better option might be to mount them in the door. There seems to be plenty of room on the door. I guess I could do a flush or surface mount up near the door latch. I like the cleaner appearance of the A piller location, and I don't like the idea of having an empty space up there, don't know why it bothers me, but there you have it.

Up here in Canada Honda offers a tweeter kit for the LX and the instructions call for them to be mounted in the doors in front of the door handle.

A lot of car audio guys will tell you to mount your tweets near your midrange for the sake of not distorting your sound field. I agree the putting the tweets in the bottom of the door might not be the best place but it would certainly be easier to put them on the door than in the pillar. You might want to think about using some sort of temporary attachment method to put the tweets at the top of the stock speaker cover panel and spend some time listening to them there, then do the same thing by putting them up on the dash and see how you like the sound in both places. You might be surprised and actually like the sound of the tweets on the doors, in which case you just saved yourself a bunch of work ;-)

Tweeters in the door sound much better than in the A pillars.

DaveZ'z post on replacing his a piller tweeters is just what I was looking for.. Thanks DaveZ! I think I'll take CoffeeDragon's advice and mock them up in both places and see if I can tell the difference. I'll let you guys know and post some pictures when I can. I'm still waiting for delivery. I love shopping in the internet, but I hate waiting for delivery.
