: @#%^ing beagle
My girl, Maggie, ran away this morning. WIfe called me at work to tell me that she was roaming the neighborhood. She won't come back until she's ready, and I won't be home until late tonight (any other night of the week would have seen me home at a reasonable hour).
She burrowed out of her fenced part of the yard and is running. My lab followed her, and waited by Mrs. Kung's car in order to rat out her sister. Nobody likes a tattle tale.
ORANGEE 11-05-2007, 02:25 PM Let us know how this turns out
I hope she comes home ok
The last time she disappeared for six days. I smoked a cigar, drank some scotch, and made my peace with her being gone.
When I went in the house there was a message on my machine that she was found and waiting for me.
She had been with some pot-heads who had been calling her Corona and probably were getting her high.
That was three years ago. I shall miss her terribly if we don't find her.
Of all the nights to have parent teacher conferences.
lala2207 11-05-2007, 03:02 PM :-( Do they have micro chips?
One of my 5 loves to slip under the fence......grr.
Hope everything turns out okay.
Twilightzero 11-05-2007, 03:10 PM I've heard many places to line the bottom of your fence with 4-6" deep gravel (crushed gravel, not that all-purpose rounded gravel crap they sell at Home Creepo).
I hope she comes home ok, it's horrible to lose a member of the family :(
My wife's step-mom, without even knowing she was missing, saw her sleeping in our driveway and put her back into the kennel.
I hope she is still there when I return, but the gravel will be happening. I had been planning to put a concrete strip under the fence but hadn't yet.
Brawsie 11-05-2007, 03:54 PM Concrete Eh?
I was talking to our puppy kindergarten teacher about this a while back. Sami digs in the garden.
She said that alot of people have had good success with putting a strip of chicken wire under the turf by the fence. Rover gets down an inch or so and encounters the wire and viola no more digging. Mind you I haven't bothered doing it, I resorted to yelling when I caught her. It may be easier than pouring a barrier, or not...
Anyhoo, I hope things go well keeping her in the yard. I don't know what I'd do without my dogs, get my share of the bed mabe?

Glad to see she's (at least temporarily) back :D
When you put in the gravel, dig a little 4-6" trench, fill it with gravel up to the bottom of the fence, then tamp it down with a sledge. The better you tamp, the less likely they are to dig.
I've also heard of people spraying the bottom of the fence with water they boiled their super hot peppers in...
Tim Vance 11-05-2007, 07:33 PM We used to have a Brittany Spaniel that loved to dig. We named him Comet, because once he got out, he was off like a rocket! Usually came back after a few hours, usually with a rabbit...
A friend of ours told us that the best way to get him to stop digging was to take his poo, and instead of 'disposing of it', bury it in the holes he's dug around the fence. Not too deep, and it may take a bit of time, depending on how big his run is, but he stopped digging around the fence:D
Mrs.Anthony337 11-05-2007, 09:22 PM Glad she was found...scary stuff.
bh241 11-05-2007, 10:24 PM Glad to hear that she's back.
That is scary, I hope you can find a way to secure the lot.
We had a golden/black lab mix who would NOT stay home when she was young. She dug under, climbed over and removed boards from fences to escape. We could not discourage her. She finally got clipped by a car (not seriously fortunately) which finally seemed to settle her down. She stayed pretty close to home after that incident but it was 3 years of hassle before that happened.
I hope your dog grows out of her wanderlust as well.
ramblerdan 11-06-2007, 01:03 AM I got a suggestion from my dog-expert GF: Put rags soaked with ammonia where the beagle dug out, and spaced around the periphery of the fence. If there are no valuable plants, use an insecticide sprayer to put a light stream of ammonia all along the fence. Your dog will stay away! A temporary but fast and dependable fix. Chicken wire along the bottom of the fence is a longer-term option if you're not too picky about looks, and as a side benefit will keep gophers and other such critters out.
