: How do you remove Rain-X?
joenuclear 09-10-2003, 11:59 AM How do you remove Rain-X? I'd like to go back to bare glass. Rain-X seems to attract the fine dust and pollen in the air this Fall.
I've tried Windex, a solution of sudsing ammonia and water(2 to 1) and a high pressure car wash. I've taken a little off but most of it is still there.
wolfcreekadman 09-10-2003, 06:58 PM Griot's Garage griotsgarage.com sells a window polishing compound that should do the trick.
joenuclear 09-10-2003, 07:59 PM Thanks wolfcreekadman,
I went to the rain x site and under FAQ's they recommend a foamy solution of Bon Ami. We'll see an I'll post the results.
P3,FOYFN 09-10-2003, 09:55 PM What is Rain-X?
Aether 09-11-2003, 06:30 AM Mutant rain, of course. :D
Gelement 09-11-2003, 02:37 PM Yesm and we all fear the Mutant Rain. Not sure if RainX is available everywhere but its a clear liquid that you rub on your window then buff out. It causes the rain to not be able to stick to your windshield as much. Almost as if you do not need a set of wipers.
Hope that helps.
P3,FOYFN 09-11-2003, 05:39 PM Oh ya. I think I saw an add for it somewhere. Probably an infomercial.
Gelement 09-11-2003, 06:14 PM Down here in california its sold in all the big stores ( target, walmart, kmart, and every auto store). Its a real product and not a "as seen on TV", it works pretty well, but I think that its best used by people who are driving without windshield wipers. It comes in either a bottle, or in a pre moistend wipe form. The same company also puts out a product called FogX. Its supposed to keep the window from fogging up. I havent tried that.
psm0110 09-12-2003, 11:51 PM FWIW - Dawn detergent will strip off just about anything, including waxes and RainX.
dogofacat 11-22-2006, 10:08 PM This stuff works great for removing RainX (http://www.deltakits.com/dki-catalog/co1.html). Cerium Oxide from Deltakits.com.
This is how I use it:
(1) Get a small bucket with a Bon Ami solution and clean the windshield with a small sponge.
(2) Dry it off with a clean towel.
(3) Put some Cerium Oxide in a small cup, add hot water and make it into a thick paste. Don’t forget to wear rubber gloves.
(4) Use a thick felt pad and lightly rub the paste onto the windshield, make sure the paste stays wet. Do a quarter of the windshield at a time.
(5) Squeegee the paste off with Bon Ami and the sponge, don’t let it run all over the trim. Wipe the area dry and with a clean towel.
(6) Continue with steps 4 & 5 until the windshield is done.
(7) Clean the windshield with Stoner invisible glass.
My windshield was very hard to see out of at night in the rain before I did this. All traces of Rain X are gone and the windshield is perfect.
Dom.five 11-23-2006, 12:47 AM I for one use Rain-X and love it. I have not had any of the trouble that all of you have encountered.
I hardly use the wipers at all. It also has the added benefit of making the Ice of winter come off with less work.
I started to use on my boat, to help with the salt spray. It worked so well that I gave it a shot on my truck. I was hooked after a trip to Indy in heavy rain. People were pulling off the road, it was coming down so hard. We just kept going, With no wipers on. It was fantastic.

hiker chick 11-23-2006, 08:21 AM I used a Porter-Cable and this Zaino glass polish -- amazing. It's also extremely effective at taking old parking stickers off the windshield. www.zainobros.com

We searched for years trying to find a glass polish that really works as advertised. Frustrated with the results, we decided to engineer our own. Introducing Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish™. Formulated with mild abrasives, Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish™ deep cleans and polishes all glass surfaces with ease. It quickly removes acid rain spots, hard water spots, road film, stubborn bird stains, and that annoying interior glass film. Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish™ is so effective, it even removes fine to medium scratches. We have yet to find a stain that Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish™ did not remove from glass. It leaves glass crystal clear and sparkling.
Will not distort glass.
Great for restoring old windshields.
Can also be used to clean and brighten chrome and other metal surfaces.
For hand or machine use.

As do I, but the only thing is it will smear if you use too much.
txbxdrvr 11-25-2006, 05:21 PM My experience with Rain-X has been largely good providing you put it on in dry weather and it rains in the next couple of days. Seems like it loses a lot of the water-shedding properties pretty quickly. I suppose if you did a "maintenance" application every 1 or 2 weeks you'd be good to go but I always forget until it starts raining again.
DLIVRY7 11-27-2006, 01:19 PM i too would give rain-x a thumbs up. works great, apply it about once a month. in the cold winter months of illinois, it keeps frost off the window during working hours.
crackerjax 11-28-2006, 08:29 PM I used Rain x on my old Dodge vans and it worked great even in a pouring, end of time rain storm in Kansas, without the wipers on. It does wipe off after a while and leaves a distinct wiper path on the glass. I removed it with lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol followed by "Stoner" glass cleaner. Do not use paper towels as they contain soap and will leave streaks. Nice clean, lint free cotton such as t shirts etc. works good.
txbxdrvr 11-28-2006, 08:43 PM I removed it with lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol followed by "Stoner" glass cleaner.
Somehow "lacquer thinner", "alcohol" and "stoner" just seem to fit together. :-P :-P :-P

Yeah! Don't they though?:-P
