: Any SC owner's with painted SC rims?
vfxraven19 12-11-2007, 03:50 PM I am considering painting my stock wheels (or even buying extra SC wheels) to a dark gun metal or black. I have thought about both painting or powder coating (<--- anyone recommend a shop in SoCal?). I am aware of the paint guides and stuff to get wheels painted, good stuff it is. :) Just wondering if any SC owner's painted their stock wheels, I'd like to see pics. Thanks!
EXwSCnose 12-11-2007, 06:54 PM I am in the process of painting a set of SC-wheels in Galaxy-Gray to match the body color. I will leave the perimeter polished and just paint the already painted 5-point star hub... Should be nice and subtle, -- just the way I like it!!!
tangerine07lx 12-11-2007, 08:56 PM if anybody painted a set black id like to see pics. im debating picking up a set of sc wheels and using my ex alloys for winter tires when i move to the east coast next year

If you paint a set of SC wheels black in the center, please post pix. I want to do this for our TRP EX, but just don't have the funds or the time right now...
vfxraven19 12-12-2007, 03:28 PM I'm thinking about buying some black after-market wheels, then sometimes within the next year- paint the stock SC wheels black (in the spoke areas, leaving the lip).

I was thinking about powder coating but was advised against it, I want black rims as well but have decided on waiting until the budget allows me to splurge on aftermarket black rims. What is the difference between painting and powder coating and should I consider powdercoating again?
closer9 12-13-2007, 08:52 AM IMHO, I would powder over paint. Its much more durable. I powder coated the wheels on my trailer among MANY other items on the Belvedere in my sig, and some on the Camino in my sig. My dad has powder coated wheels on his Sprint, and I believe there is at least one member on here with PC wheels.
Powder coat is simply a very fine plastic powder that is electrolytically sprayed on metal, then heated to around 350-400 F to melt or cure (depending on the type of powder). They say when done right you should be able to drop a 1 lb weight from 1 foot and not chip the coating...
Why were you advised against it??? I am a big proponent of powder coating and have been doing it myself with an Eastwood's kit for a couple years or so...

...of course you meant to say electrostatically.

A fellow EOCer had it done and he said that it was cheap and durable but then another E owner told me he either did it once or knew someone who had it done and the rims chipped pretty quickly.
How would I determine if a company does good work and what's a good price for all four wheels?
closer9 12-14-2007, 09:19 AM Best bet is like any other shop, try to get some references. Ask around, etc...
I've never paid to have any wheels coated, but Dad paid $50 a wheel for (4) 15"X7"s and (4) 15"x8"s... and I think most would agree that's about average maybe a little on the low end for most places...
Def. go with powder coat. Friend painted his wheels and they looked like cr@p after only a few months. Paint just won't stand up to use, chips right off.
TheAntirice 12-14-2007, 06:29 PM Ive painted some wheels before with Duplicolor wheel paint with great results. Black is hard to find but they sell it like base/clear if you just lightly sand the surface and make sure its clean before painting you can get oem like finish. NOt everybody is so inclined to do such a thing but it can be done fairly cheap. The paint is about 7$ a can (if you can find it)
If someone posts a clear side-view shot of an SC I can photoshop the color black just to show what it might look like.
