: Polar Bear Club--winter campout
ReaperZune8 12-21-2007, 10:38 AM Anybody interested in doing a winter campout in the Mtns of NC?
The Down n Dirty
Date: 9th Feb
Place:http://www.rivercreekcampground.com/
UPDATES:
I will plan on going to the following address
http://www.rivercreekcampground.com/
River Creek Campground, Cabins, and RV Park
217 River Creek Drive
Rutherfordton, NC 28139
Been there before and its a nice little campground... kind of small but there usually arent many people camping this time of year. It is right next to a little river/creek thing and not far from Chimney Rock. It is a beautiful area and i thouroughly enjoyed it the last time we went. The campground is privately run so the rules on beverages arent as stringent.
Hopefully the silly open fire ban (bh241=bearer of bad news) will be lifted by then as well.
DATE, UPDATE!!
Ok... I have been given a timeframe when i will be back... Hence making it able for me to start planning stuff like this... NOW... for your input... I will be able to do it the weekends of either the 2nd or 9th of Feb... let me know what works for y'all and a firm date will then be set
FrEEdom 12-21-2007, 11:17 AM I would LOVE to-- alas, NC isn't as close as it used to be. :(
Rocket Dog 12-21-2007, 11:39 AM I'll keep an eye on this concept, depending on the date I could be up for it.
(that is if I haven't blasted into space yet)
dog drool 12-21-2007, 11:53 AM I might be talked into going IF there can be a fire. and I get my heater fixed.
I will bring the pole for RD.
ReaperZune8 12-21-2007, 11:55 AM I'll keep an eye on this concept, depending on the date I could be up for it.

Cool... i will make an attempt to beat the... i mean ask her nicely to tell me where exactly we are going:razz:... and the date will follow (military TDY's... guaranteed to leave on a certain date... not so certain on the return)
and fire... i do not camp without fire
bh241 12-21-2007, 05:53 PM Sounds like a good idea to me. Again depending on the date.
I think the state still has a burn ban on all outdoor fires.... we are seriously short of rain this year.
EDIT: Yea, I thought there was a ban...

DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES ISSUES STATEWIDE BURNING BAN
October 15, 2007
RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Bill Ross reinstated the open burning ban effective at 1 p.m. today.
The N.C. Division of Forest Resources has initiated a statewide ban on all open burning and canceled all burning permits. The ban on open burning will be in effect until further notice. The ban on open burning is necessary because of the dry weather conditions and depleted water resources across the state.
By North Carolina law (G.S. 113-60.25 and 113.60.27), the ban prohibits all open burning statewide, regardless of whether a permit was issued. The issuance of any new permits has been suspended until the ban is lifted. In addition to the $100 fine, people in violation of the open burning ban may have to pay court costs.
For more information, contact Brian R. Haines (brian.haines@ncmail.net) at (919) 733-2162 ext. 234. Citizens can also contact a county ranger with the Division of Forest Resources or the local county fire marshal's office.

ReaperZune8 12-22-2007, 05:11 AM SHENANIGANS... EVIL SHENANIGANS... guess that means no fire, for now anyway, There is always the possiblility that it could be lifted before Feb... still I'm throwing the shenanigans flag:mad:
Reguardless i am going camping, even if i have to buy a grill or something...
of course this invite extends to our E-ple to the north. again the date is still not firm... but i am thinking it will be early in Feb
kissya 12-22-2007, 03:07 PM I will watch for the date.....maybe I'll cabin camp.:D
ReaperZune8 01-01-2008, 05:25 AM Hmm... No replies to the date or location... Is there not anymore interest in this?... If there isnt expressed interest after 10 Jan I will be Killing the idea... and will probably end up just modding
dog drool 01-01-2008, 07:30 AM If you chose a date and a location you will get more feed back. I can do either date but I need to see how my personal life is going. After all this rain the powers that be might lift the burn ban.
lifeizgood 01-02-2008, 06:44 PM NC To Lift Fire Burning Ban
Jan 2, 2008 06:36 PM
Officials have temporarily lifted an outdoor burning ban because the state received enough moisture from recent rains to make conditions safer for controlled fires.
Officials say controlled burning will help reduce built-up underbrush and forest vegetation that could lead to larger and more intense wildfires later in the year.
The ban was imposed in mid-October because drought depleted water resources and left the region with a dry landscape.
State officials say they will continue to monitor conditions and could reinstate the ban if conditions change.
ReaperZune8 01-02-2008, 11:49 PM OH ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!

The Date:

The Place:
River Creek Campground, Cabins, and RV Park
217 River Creek Drive
Rutherfordton, NC 28139
The link to the campground website is in the original post.
lifeizgood 01-04-2008, 01:18 AM We're probably out of this one with the Expo in Richmond going on that weekend.
At least you can start a fire!
Enjoy. :)
UP&ATOM 01-05-2008, 07:48 AM Keep us in the loop! Early February would be great for us! Just a skip and jump from us in Wilmington (NC)
We just returned from Christmas in the Uwharrie Forest, staying at the Baden Lake/Arrowhead Campground just outside of Troy, N.C. for several days.
FYI, the burn ban DID NOT include fire rings at Uwharrie over the holidays...we were able to have a campfire the entire time. Even double checked with the camp host to make sure.
Look forward to following this thread!
Cheers,
Jamie, Kat and Jager
lifeizgood 01-05-2008, 06:16 PM Welcome aboard, Jamie! Sorry I'll miss meeting you at this one, but there are more meets to come. :)
Look, Benny!!!! Fresh meat!!!! Shhhhh...
LmentalMastiffs 01-07-2008, 02:08 PM While I'd love to attend, I doubt I will. :| I don't do well in the cold.
BUT my aunt is a Park Ranger in that area and I can certainly check with her regarding any burning bans.
Now, if I could find a little camper like Mel's, I'd surely be there, but then I'd need a sugar daddy just to afford it too.

bh241 01-07-2008, 03:04 PM The state wide burn ban is lifted for now. If the weather is like it has been the past couple of days when this goes down, it will be great.
I'm planning on going. No sense in keeping the camping gear stowed away all winter. :)
ReaperZune8 01-26-2008, 05:49 PM I am still planning on going on this... let me know if youre still interested ;)
just got back to the states about a week ago... got new shoes for the E and already did a little trip with the girl, Pics are on their way.
bh241 01-29-2008, 06:48 AM I'm going to have to bow out of this one. Time is just not on my side for this weekend.
Was in Virginia last weekend, and will be in Tennessee this coming weekend...
Take pictures of the camp and post them, above all have fun! Enjoy the campfire.
If we can find the time, we'll try and at least drive over for a couple or three hours, but it may be Sunday before we could even do that.
ReaperZune8 02-02-2008, 07:45 AM its all good... i think im a bit wore out myself, we will just call this cancelled or postponed untill a better time ;)
