: JL 6inch Sub Question
LarryBones 12-22-2007, 05:42 PM Hey guys,
I was wondering, what do I need to hook up the 6" JL audio subwoofer in the place of the stock sub in the stock enclosure underneath the dash.
And..how hard would this be to do?
I always try to stay away from wiring and electronics if I can.
I would like to keep the stock headunit, but I have a nice alpine I can put in there..but I just wanted to keep it stock if I could.
got any ideas?
I know a few of you on here are audio experts...so I thought it wouldnt hurt to ask for some advice.
thanks a bunch,
Larry-
LMntGuy1982 12-23-2007, 12:15 AM Unless you already have the sub I'd suggest getting the factory box modded to fit an 8" like I did. The 6" just doesn't have quite enough kick and I don't know if the factory amp will have enough power to push that JL to its full potential. Plus if I recall correctly the factory sub is a dual voice coil. That will make a difference if you're hooking up a single voice coil sub.

Unless you seal the port of the enclosure and stick a 7Kv.2 in there with an aftermarket amp powering it...
Trust me, I know. :D

Eh?
what kinda of sub are you using? or, moreso what do you suggest?
taking out the stock sub box and sealing it up and stuffing a little bit of baffle fill isnt a problem..it's just picking the correct sub, amp, and wiring it all so that you cannot see a single thing thats going to be hard for me.
LarryBones 12-23-2007, 09:58 PM correction, I was just lazy. I did a search and it was elemental designs.
so which one you prefer?
The JL or the Elemental Designs?

I never tried the JL but I can opt for the ED sub pounding. I'm pushing about 80-100w RMS and it pounds. You can put a decent-sized amp (100W-200W monoblock) under either seat. Also, I sealed the box up with some silicone because it's very leaky from the factory so, make sure you do that first then plug the port.
edit: I also used a 1/2 spacer for the sub to give it a little more interior volume because of the speaker displacement. You don't have to but I had some lying around so I used it. This also makes the sub hit the grill on excursion but I modified the screws on the grill cover with some washers and it doesn't hit it at all now, but there's a gap. I'm planning to get some door edge guards from Walmart for 2 dollars and use that to cover the gap.
LarryBones 12-24-2007, 01:34 AM just for fun...do you think it would make difference if I plugged up the port before I got the new sub, and used the factory like that with a better sealed box?
i have some time on my hands before I can actually get a hold of a elemental designs sub..and do a real sub install. maybe 2-3 weeks,

Well, since the factory sub came with a ported enclosure, I think it would perform better with it. I think you should just seal up the box with silicone (save the port for later) and leave it ported. I forgot how the stock sub sounded with a sealed box because I replaced it quickly with the 7kv.2. Just remove the screws, and it opens up in two parts (front and back). Apply silicone on the edges and screw it back up. I had to put some silicone over the screws as well since I was getting air leaks from them and it was making the sub rattle. (Both stock and the ED subs). Let it dry for 24 hours. Let it air out because I read the fumes from the silicone and really mess up a speaker surround (or some other part, I forget).
Next, I bought some speaker wire and basically cut off the plug on the enclosure and routed the new speaker wires straight to the amp. You don't have to but I was planning to rewire the fronts so I did the subs as well.
Overall, plugging the port and sealing up the box is the most important step. The 7kv.2 requires .5 cub. feet for a ported enclosure and only .2 cub. feet for a sealed. The stock enclosure is about .15-.20 depending on which thread you read, then you have the speaker displacement and it gets smaller. That's why I used the spacer.
How does the 7Kv.2 with a sealed sealed setup sound with hte stock EX amplifier compared to the OEM sub?
tribalelement 03-13-2008, 10:09 PM Thats alot of boom boom:shock:

Like crap. If you're gonna spend money on a 7Kv.2, you might as well spend money on a good amp and make it sound the way it should sound.
jpeaslee 03-16-2008, 11:34 PM The factory amp is the weakest link. The factory sub itself isn't great, but its a bit better than the factory amp. I'd highly recommend mike's mod and then see if you're happy or not.
LarryBones 03-17-2008, 09:52 PM yea, i gave up on that a long time ago.
i bought the mtx audio 10" self powered sub that fits nicely in my trunk and doesnt take up any room at all.
SO much better than the stock sub. i dont even believe the stock box with the JL would sound as nice.
Darn, I thought this was a sandwich thread:sad:
rymo926 03-19-2008, 06:21 PM i just sealed mine and man did it made a difference...much tighter...i pluged the port and it was bad...very bad...lucky that's easy reversible...now the car smells like silicone...STINKS

Wait, was that WITH the stock sub or with the 7kv.2? Did you let the silicone sit for a day or two?
renae_b 03-19-2008, 07:23 PM Kicker now has a shallow 6.5" sub thats our cars for $100. The box can be as small as .2cu ft, but has to be sealed. I'd still pay the extra cash for the JL though.

rymo926 03-19-2008, 08:19 PM stock sub. i did let it sit a day. it was fine. pluged it up, fired it up, a day later, unpluged it, fired it up and a min later...ewww what's that smell.hahaha

Stock sub was suppose to be used with the stock enclosure. Only plug it if you're upgrading to a sub that requires the sealed volume that plugging it gives.

Not to hijack this thread (it's still sort of on topic), but could you possibly post some pics of your eD setup. I'm really considering this and would like see how it all came together.
Thanks
Mike
renae_b 03-24-2008, 10:06 PM I HATE THIS BOARD! All it's doing is making me spend more money. I bit the bullet and bought the JL Audio 6.5 today with a four channel Alpine MRP-F250. I'm going to run the fronts off of the two front channels (40 x 2 RMS), and the sub off the rear/nonfading (110 x 1 RMS)
Together with install, $300.
Bad news is that is doesn't go in until next week.
