Here is how it was calculated:
1. Fill up my tank
2. Reset the trip meter
3. Drive for a few days
4. Fill up the tank again
5. Record the trip miles and the number of gallons took to fill up the tank
6. Divide the trip miles by the number of gallons and voila
In my case:
223.8 divived by 8.79 = 25.46

I think 25 is great... My current avg after almost 14 months of keeping track is 23.7886 MPG. My worst MPG was 18.6679 and the best has been 30.6939.
Hi stockp:
Yes, thats how it should work, it would be nice to see 30. :-|
I just got a used 04 with an automatic, new tires, I just checked mine out at about 26.
I will try to improve from there, things I will do are:
1)front end alignment.
2)service by dealer including a tune up, you know, plugs, filters, computer checks and adjustments.
3)check tire air pressure.
Have Fun: Jeff:cool:

Funny story:
I have been keeping track of my mileage since the first tank after buying my E new. I meticulously track my mileage, saving my gas receipts with my scribbled info printed on them such as what mileage I had when I filled up and keeping that info until I get home to input it into my spreadsheet at home. I even go so far as to always top off my tank (until the gas spills over, I know I shouldn't do that, but it is the only consistent way of knowing how much gas I used since last fill up.) Anyway, during the holidays wife used the E to lug presents around to different holiday parties. I was driving a few days later, filled up my tank, came home and inputed my info. 24.99 miles per gallon. Best mileage ever for me, about 5mpg more than usual. I filled up that week at a new gas station that just opened up and was bragging to my wife about the great mileage I got and that I found a new gas station that will be my exclusive station from now on (must be the new underground tanks that gave me that mileage I thought!:)) My wife looks at me funny and says, "You and your spreadsheets, that is wierd to be so obsessed with keeping track of every last drop of gasoline. But what you shouldn't do is leave your tank so empty when it's cold outside I HAD TO PUT $10 WORTH OF GAS IN LAST WEEK BECAUSE THE GAS LIGHT CAME ON.." You what!!!! Where's the receipt, how many miles did I have, when did you......how could you.....oh no, my data!!!!!! Anyways, so much for my great mileage and new gas station.
Did anyone notice if the mileage improves once their E is broken in? I have been considering not even calculating the first dealer tank.
That is a funny story Nitz.
My dad bought a Triumph TR10, which was a little four cylinder station wagon, it was new in 1960. He was meticulous about checking the gas mileage. Our next door neighbor started sneaking over at night and adding gas to the car, and straight faced he listened to my dad bragging about the great mileage he was getting. (remember this was when gas was like 20 cents a gallon)
Then one day he started sneaking over and siphoning the gas out....

They have a Fuel Log already programmed for all of those inputs!! I've been using it for 2 years now and it's VERY precise! 8)
