This is what bird C#@P can do...

There have been many comments made that Honda paint is soft; believe it. Well, I suppose this can happen to just about any finish, but let this serve as a warning when cleaning up any kind of bird poop.

I went to the beach this morning and made the sad mistake of parking close to a tree. When I returned, I found that a pigeon had bombed my Element and left its mess with a few spots on the roof and clamshell door, below the glass. I usually keep some quick detailer and a couple of MF towels in one of the rear cubbies and proceeded to clean up the crap. After wiping up and much to my horror and dismay, I found of series a bad scratches in the paint...

Just a word to the wise. Not only do we need to contend with the nasty bird digestive enzymes that can ruin paint, but we need to be mindful that pigeons (and other birds) are foragers and not only do they pick up the normal detritus they feed on, but they also peck on small bits of rocks, gravel, and sand. Obviously, all of this gets passed thru the digestive tract and onto any poor, unsuspecting Element targeted.

When cleaning any bird messes, best to flush with PLENTY of clean water before wiping up. My scratches are bad enough that it's going to require that I buff them out w/my Porter Cable polisher.

typical american foreign policy usually calls for heavy weapons on seconds notice to prevent conflict via intimidation and be ready for conflict via actually having the big gun ready.

likewise, being an american, i took preventive steps in order to minimize conflict or be prepared for it in a seconds notice....

the skies over my element are forever secure.

(dont worry, all of em are airsoft guns i use in tournaments)
you are lookin at a bunch of colts, a full-auto glock, 2 mp5s the second one has the marine spec sight(fires bout 180 bbs a minute), i also got a grenade launcher that sprays 80 bbs at 350 fps all at one time. the only gun i dont use in the tournaments are the two airsoft rifle above, one of which shoots at 700 fps.

any bird that dares to be caught defecating on my car will be sh!tting bbs for weeks on end.

Oh no! Sorry to hear about the damage. I know how it feels; I had a similar situation in my other car a few years ago. I wiped away a 15-minute-old bird dropping off my hood, using plenty of water and a clean towel. Any normal dropping would have been wiped away, but this one was "radioactive."

Poor bird must've drank something very toxic, because it ate away at the finish. I now have a permanent reminder of what a bird can do to a car's finish.

Good luck fixing yours!

wow, bummer about that scratch. my car gets bombed on a daily basis because of all the wires that run above our street. i've been very lucky so far that the local pidgeons haven't been eating anything abrasive. i am a little pissed about the old ladies that feed the pidgeons near our house. now they flock to our block every day. not cool!!

i also wish you luck with getting that scratch out.

You can probably get a permit from your local deptment of health (DOH) to shoot the birds, and/or have DOH educate the feeders that pigeons are a public health threat - goggle 'em you'll never look at a pigeon the same way...

Oh no! If I EVER see even the slightest spec of bird booboo on my E Im dropping everything (even babies) and driving to the nearest car wash to get 100% of the car senatized. That sounds alot more civilized then shooting them with airsoft guns...

Nice guns btw! :)

Got this advice from a bodyshop detailer, and it works!

Don't try to clean it off by scrubbing with soap and water. Instead, if the car has been in the sun, move it to shade and let the paint cool down. Take a folded wash cloth, soak it with water (you want it dripping wet!), and place it on the dropping. DO NOT RUB!! Back away for about 10 minutes. After that time, you can remove the cloth and the dropping will have softened up, and most will stick to the towel. Rinse off, or unfold the towel to a clean spot, and dab off (don't rub!) what remains. If rinsing/dabbing doesn't remove whats left, repeat the soak proceedure again. Finish with quick detailer, or touch up the spot with wax!

I was told to use cloth, but thick paper towels worked too! (and they are disposable ;-) )

WHAT WAS THAT BIRD EATING --ROCKS? PIGEONS ARE JUST FLYING RATS.
WHERE I USED TO WORK WE HAD A BAD PIGEON PROBLEM. WE HIRED A GUY TO GET RID OF THEM, HE PUT CORN LACED WITH ARSNIC ON THE LEDGE WHERE THEY LIKE TO HANG OUT. WHEN THEY ATE THE CORN, THEY WOULD TAKE OF TO FLY AWAY AND GET ABOUT 50 FEET AND FALL STRAIGHT DOWN. THE GUY HAD TO PICK THEM ALL UP SO NO DOGS OR CATS ATE THEM. WORKED GOOD THOUGH.

Birdie Pampers! Make it the law!

I had the bird poop etch the paint on a Ford, I too wondered what the heck that bird had been eating, this wasn't scratches.

All birds ingest some grit, without it they cannot digest, and just look at the stuff they eat, seeds, they need something to break that non-soluble fiber down, so little rocks it is. Actually, maybe the seeds act as grit to grind up the other stuff they eat, as they spread a lot of seeds around, pre-fertilized.

Liquid sandpaper.
