: Mid-South caravan to the International Meet

What say you folks? Can we pull this off?

Would it be great to get together, ride up to the International Meet as a group? Just think, we could meet up with some of the Mid-Atlantic bunch (they are always good for a laugh). Maybe even get some of our Southeast friends too. If we could coordinate this - it would be absolutely awesome. Can you imagine 20 or 30 of us toolin' down the Interstates?

Seriously, we can do this.

Heck, we can even make up some signs... Marysville or Bust

I'm adding this link to ramblerdan's post in the Northeast Forum re: Convoy wisdom (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45157) most of it sounds like good advice.

The caravan is for Thursday the 19th of June.

These times look to be the best option(s)

IF ANYONE HAS A CONFLICT WITH THE POSTED TIMES
PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP

I'm thinking we could all take an hour or so and have a sit-down lunch in Beckley, WV. It's about half way (for most) and it aught to give everyone a chance to stretch and have a bite to eat.

Overview:Not counting any "Lunch Time":
Va. Beach to Ohio is going to be roughly 10 hour drive.
Marshall to Ohio (this route) is roughly 8 1/2 hour drive.
Bedford, Va. to Ohio is roughly a 7 1/2 hour drive.
Gaffney, SC to Ohio is roughly 8 1/4 hour drive.
I'm thinking we could all meet in Beckley WV and have something to eat. That should be kinna mid-way (well, it will be lunch time anyway) for most everyone. It would probably be good to get out and stretch and generally enjoy each other's company.

From there it's about 4 1/4 hours on in to the motel.

On the Road Contact Info:

If you want to try and meet up with us somewhere along the route(s) please send me a pm and we will swap cell phone numbers.

Additionally, as we have in the past, we will be using FRS radios channel 7 as a means of staying in contact.

I urge everyone to actually get a FRS radio, if you have more than one, bring them! We could then make certain everyone has a radio. As most everyone knows, the radios play an important (and fun) part on these caravans.

Yea, I know. It's tough to do, but maybe we could pull it off. I guess everyone will want to get there the fastest route and this would add time/miles to most.
Still if we could do it, it really would be amazing to see.

E-ple have a unique way of making things happen.

gotta have faith. :)

Benny/Ron what route will you take, I googled mapped ours, it takes us up 64 to WV then up to Ohio, 10 1/2 hours. Hope it will work out.

How would you guys go?

Havn't look at it yet but sounds like we could meet somewhere on 77. Like I said, havn't looked at it yet but we could all get together, Im quessing.8-)

From here it looks like I-77N to US-33.

from Ron's it looks adding about 30 minutes to his fastest route.

We could all meet up at I-81/I-77 I think there is a Truck Stop right there if I remember right.

Of course, Ron and I can get together at the normal Exit 96 of I-85 near Gaffney, SC.

I'm not certain if the would be a feasible route for the Va. Beach guys?

EDIT: looks like we could meet up with the Va. Beach guys where I-64 comes into the VW Turnpike (I-77) (outside of Beckley, WV)
It looks doo-able if we could get the timing down.

OK - here's four 'google maps' of the trip to Marysville.

see post #1 for all the latest maps, routes, and meet up points.

If those routes are feasible for everyone then all we have to do is figure out a time frame....
(yea, that's the tough part.)

Okay, here's my route ...

From Marshall, VA (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl)

We won't be anywhere near you folks till I77 reaches I70 and it looks like Georgetown just off I70 would be a good place to meet up?

Any thoughts??

However, if you travel this route, from Marshall, Va (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=marshall,+va&daddr=37.770715,-81.166992+to:Marysville,+OH&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=7&via=1&sll=38.873929,-80.452881&sspn=3.66054,7.382813&ie=UTF8&z=7&om=0) it's a little longer but not much really.

You could meet the Va. Beach bunch outside of Staunton, Va (I-64 and I-81)

Yea, I'm thinking the same thing. I do not have a motel for Thursday night, and honestly doubt I will go with another night at the 'official motel' due mainly to the cost.

I do agree that the caravan should go down on Thursday though.

I went ahead and edited the first post of this thread to include the maps that I posted in post #9. As we work out the details I'll update post one accordingly.

So what time do we want to arrive at Ohio? That would seem to be the easiest way to determine what time(s) to meet along the routes.

Here's my line of thinking.

Larry posted earlier today:

Everyone wants to be there on Friday all day and into the night and Saturday all day.

So if we get there on Thursday evening in time for us to get checked into (whatever) motel and get a decent meal - everyone is happy?

Remember, it's what nearly 11 hours for those of you from the Va. Beach area - if we say arrive in Ohio about 6:00pm (that's 1800 for you grass skirt wearing submarine boys) you're looking at heading out say 7:00am (0700), 8:00am from Lynchburg, and 9:00am from Marshall and Gaffney.

Looks doo-able to me. What say the rest of you? I can work out the actual meet-up points and times if the start/end times are good for everyone.

Needless to say, a cell-phone list and the two-way radios are going to be important in this trip.

EDIT: Bob and Ted (not sure what Carol and Alice were doing ) were posting while I was typing this. Are we all thinking about getting there on Thursday?

I really need to re-do the maps, I'm showing the end in Marysville Ohio rather than the actual motel in Dublin. Not that it really matters as far as our planning though.

It would be easy enough to catch up with you at 270/70 or thereabouts, it might even be easier (closer & less time) if Keri caught up with you and drove with you down 70... or you guys could take a more 'southern' route and we could all go up together. :-| I'll leave that up to you guys to think about. After all, you're the ones doing the driving.

It looks like I'll be able to post a realistic time map when I get home (I might get the chance at work but wouldn't count on it.) Then we can all take a look-see and iron out the rough edges.

I've re-worked the whole route for the caravan. Take a look-see at post #1 and let me know if you think that is feasible.

I have not nailed down the times yet - will try and get something worked out tomorrow - life gets in the way sometimes. I do need to figure in time for 'necessary' stops, and a 'hold over' at the meet-up points.

I was thinking about everyone getting together and having a dinner/lunch/eattin' E-vent somewhere around maybe Beckley, WV. Thoughts??

*nudge* (back to the topic)

I've been thinking about meeting places along the route and would welcome anyone's input.

The last time I drove the WV Turnpike it was a two lane road... of course, that was probably the mid 70's. Anyway, It looks like the Beckley Travel Plaza (http://www.wvturnpike.com/beckley_tic.htm) would be the best place to meet for those of us coming from NC/SC. Thoughts anyone?

Google Map of the area (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=&daddr=37.810496,-81.212568&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=15&sll=37.810835,-81.21171&sspn=0.014511,0.028839&ie=UTF8&ll=37.794593,-81.215057&spn=0.232231,0.461426&z=11&om=0)

How about the other 'meet up' points? Is anyone familiar enough with these areas to actually pick a place to get together at?

Is anyone familiar with the other points? Have a clue about any good places to meet - Lexington, Va and Staunton, Va.

Also - do we need to come up with a place to meet in Va. Beach? or anywhere else?

That looks to be about mid-way between Staunton and Lexington - would anyone abject to just using this one for both?

In other words, have everyone coming from Marshall/DC (Kerri I guess) and Va. Beach (Colin, Bob, Ted, others) and Lynchburg (Mel) meet here. I know it's a bit out of the way for Mel, but it would make one stop for everyone instead of two.

Are we going to need 2way radios? If so what type channel should I get?

Doesn't matter what brand, if you want to get a set, Walmart or about any other discount store should have a set of two for around $25.00. What you're wanting is a FRS two way radio, you'll probably find FRS/GMRS radios are more common.

Those will work, just don't get sucked into paying a lot of money, you don't need the fancy stuff for what we're doing.

here's a link (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?guideID=1072288099473&type=page&id=cat12077)that talks about the type radio. I got mine at HH.Greg for 20.00.

Is the Wilco at Raphine, VA still the planned meeting point?

Yes, that one is still one of the planned meeting points. I'm not certain how many - or even if any - are actually coming down from NoVa/DC area to join up, it really adds a couple of hours to their run, so we'll just have to see.

Regardless, I think that is where Mel and any other Lynchburg area E-ple are planning to catch up with the E-ple coming from the Va. Beach area. Since the Va.beach bunch has the longest ride, I wanted to merge everyone else into the direct Va.Beach to Ohio route.

The current itinerary will always be posted in the first post of this thread - if there are any questions, check there first. Then of course, there's always pm, email, and even the phone...

Yea, the overall route is the quickest and most direct route from Va. Beach to the motel in Ohio. It's about a 10 hour run for you guys. The rest of us will merge in along the route.

Some at the Wilco in Raphine,Va the rest of us catch up with you guys in Beckley, WV.

You (or anyone else) may want to pm me and we'll swap cell phone #'s so we don't miss each other.

Most of us should be arriving at Beckley Travel center between 11:00am and 11:30am give or take. We're planning to take time to have lunch before we all head out for Ohio.

The schedule posted in post #1, as far as I know right now, is pretty close to accurate for everyone.

I saw that. Thanks for coordinating things! If the Raphine group leaves around 9AM, they'll probably be in my neck of the woods around 9:45AM (assuming they'll travel I-64 to Beckley, WV). If someone planning on meeting at Raphine would PM me, I'd appreciate it!

If you guys would, please send me a pm or give me a call so I can get a decent ideal of how many are actually still planning (or seriously considering) joining this caravan.

I know some have modified their plans and I just didn't want to spend a lot of time 'waiting' on someone who isn't even planning to join the ride, know what I mean?

Seriously, help me get an idea of how many we're looking at joining the ride to Ohio.

Thanks.

Hey Benny;

We are planning on being in Beckley, WV late Wednesday afternoon for an over nite stay at the Microtel. This is because Mrs. Spotman (MaryBeth) can't handle the looooong ride in one day!

We will meet and greet the "Caravan" on Thursday whenever you all get there, we can scope out a place to eat, there is even a Cracker Barrel there, along with many others.

Just give me a call when you are close, gives me enough time to get out of the indoor pool and spa.:D

I went through Beckley last weekend. There is a brand-spankin'-new Hooters at that exit ... right beside the interstate ... southwest corner, I believe. It looked really nice as I drove by to go to McDonald's ( I was in a hurry!)

Bringing this back to the top, all the meeting points and contact information are posted in the first post (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showpost.php?p=536338&postcount=1). Sadly, since we are no longer able to edit posts what we have is it... there will be no more modifications to the route, I simply do not wish to further confuse anyone.

Please join us at any of the points posted or contact me (pm, email, or phone) and we'll work it out that way.

See you guys/gals Thursday.

See you guys/gals Thursday.

I just finished packing about an hour ago. I was feeling hungry, so I drove to Hardee's. On the way home, a Virginia Deer (aka white-tail deer) decided to commit suicide on my Element. This was my second deer-related incident in less than two months (see my first deer incident (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45854&highlight=deer)). Just yesterday, I stopped by the auto body repair shop for two minor adjustments to finish off all the first deer damage. Today, I was in at the local Honda dealer getting new tires in preparation for the trip. Now this.

I saw my life flash before my eyes ... OK, actually I saw the Honda factory tour disappearing before my eyes. When I got home, a half mile later, I prepared for the worst. I got lucky ... I don't think there is any significant damage this time! There's hair & blood from front bumper to tailpipe, but surprisingly no damage! Hurray for Honda engineering!

If you see a SOP broken down on I-64 tomorrow, you'll know I wasn't so lucky after all. Please stop and help me push it to East Liberty!

Just a quick note to thank everyone for a truly great caravan.

It was fun to spend the time traveling with everyone, hope we can get together again one day.

Eddie, you handled the drive well, I'm impressed with your skills and look forward to riding the roads with you again one day.

All in all, we done good, no major catastrophes, well other than missing a connection.... ;-)
