I'm not sure how I got talked into this but...
In a little over a week we will be picking up another West Highland White Terrier. Dexter (our 2 year old Westie) has a sister who had her first litter in December and we will be adopting a "niece".
As some of you may recall, Dexter is from Burn's Lake which is, essentially, in the middle of nowhere in North Central British Columbia. Our first plan was to fly her down but the airlines have recently changed their policies about carrying dogs as cargo and can't guarantee that the little one will get enough heat travelling as cargo especially this time of year.
Fortunately, one of her litter mates is being adopted by a family that lives in 150 Mile House and they have kindly agreed to bring our pup down with them when they go to collect theirs. This means we only have to drive about 6 hours and will pick her up in Williams Lake (the nearest town of any size to 150 Mile).
The main question will be the weather. It is clear, cool and perfect for travel right now (about -15 at night) but there is snow forecast for next week starting on the weekend. When we picked up Dexter from Burns Lake it was October and we were really lucky with the weather. We're pushing it a bit going that way in February but keep your fingers crossed.
This is a pic Dexter at about the same age she will be when we pick her up (7 to 8 weeks). He was happy in the box all the way from Burns Lake! Dexter has always been a great traveller so we hope the new kid will take it in her stride as well. I'll update as this goes along.
Haven't settled on any names yet. Anyone got any suggestions for female names that would suit a Westie?
Sunshine 01-23-2008, 06:51 PM My dad and step-mom just got a Westie in December. Her name is Lexi and the first dog under 80 pounds my dad has ever had. She's adorable, and she gets along great with Bentley, her new 5 year old golden retriever big brother. They sleep together and he chews (gently) on her head, and she bites down on his tail and shakes it as hard as she can. :)
I can't wait to see some pictures!
StevieSegel 01-23-2008, 06:58 PM PVR -- pets are like potato chips! You can't have just one!
(I have a dog, and some betta fish, and a cat is getting added to the mix on Feb. 1).
What an adorable puppy!
gisele 01-23-2008, 07:09 PM OMG gawd, Dexter was cute cute cute!
The new niece should be named Gisele :D

Dom.five 01-23-2008, 07:12 PM Ok you have my attention, I will be looking forward to the update.
Please.....,,, Please don't leave me hanging, like the woodpecker episode. I still don't know what happened.

:D
I completely forgot about the woodpecker! Boy, do you have a long memory Dom.
If its any consolation - nothing happened! There was a "palace revolt" in the office to the idea of using a pellet gun or anything else that would hurt the bird and, as it happens, the little bugger moved on after a while anyway.
I will be SURE to update you on the puppy.
carvingbarn 01-23-2008, 07:39 PM Nice looking puppy! We will have a new Border Collie pup in about 3 weeks.

I kinda like the name Jojo:)
I like the name Jojo too!
However, sorry to you Jo and to hiker chick as well -neither Jojo nor Moondoggie are on the short list!
Just askin - were you a fan of beach blanket movies in your misspent youth hiker chick?

How is Ceilidh pronounced?
Also, your pup just e-mailed me she said she likes the name Gisele. :D
Pronounced "Kay lee"
Nice try with the email!
gisele 01-24-2008, 07:51 PM Pronounced "Kay lee"
Nice try with the email!
Oh, is that a Celtic spelling? I used to have a little neighbor girl named Caleigh, pronounced "Kay lee".
Yes, it is the same word in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic -its literal meaning is "visit" but it usually connotes a celebration or party with dancing and music!
... Any idea what clan she's from?
While we are on the Celtic theme, I'm not sure which clan but I would hazard a guess that it might be MacDougall!
wolfhounder 01-25-2008, 07:04 AM thought of a good one--
Piper
Wilyumm 01-25-2008, 07:11 AM In college I was in Brigadoon and always liked the name "Fiona"

bh241 01-25-2008, 09:35 AM Haven't settled on any names yet. Anyone got any suggestions for female names that would suit a Westie?
I'll be the first to admit that I have not read through all the posts, but I think a female Westie named Tess would be fitting.
Rocket Dog 01-25-2008, 09:55 AM How about a more traditional Celtic style name like Horoku?

Twilightzero 01-25-2008, 12:14 PM EXACTLY! Name your dog Hoser!
I will second my official vote for Hoser
Wait, I'm agreeing with RD? There must be a cosmic disturbance somewhere...
[Sorry, the closest we will get to this is MacKenzie (already on the list).
BTW, the MacKenzie Brothers dog was named hosehead I believe!
wolfhounder 01-25-2008, 01:34 PM c'mon you guys? don't you just love the name Piper for a little Westie???
Rocket Dog 01-25-2008, 01:36 PM I like the name Ted. It's easy to yell...trust me.
We got a puppy once when I was kid.
I wanted to name it Misty, and my brother wanted to name it poop bottom.
We had to a family compromise (I cried when I actually thought they would go with poop bottom).
So I was happy when we named the dog Misty Bottom:D

There's a neighborhood in DC called Foggy Bottom :confused::twisted:
dog-e 01-26-2008, 01:23 AM Well, it's not as creative of a name as "Gisele", but Dexter (http://imdb.com/title/tt0773262/)'s sisters name is Debra. Got to admit, your Dexter doesn't look much like a serial killer, but neither does the other Dexter. And he is such a nice serial killer that he seems like he deserves a dog named after him.
wolfhounder 02-01-2008, 07:35 AM SO WHAT did you name her?????
carvingbarn 02-01-2008, 08:04 AM A pile of pups.

Great pic!
Can you tell which one is yours?
Looks like it is a go for the trip to Williams Lake on Sunday. The Siberian cold front has passed and there is no significant snowfall forecast for the weekend.
wolfhounder 02-01-2008, 08:37 PM yes--please take lots of pictures and videos of Piper;-)
And the winner of that name that puppy contest is ...
(drum roll, fanfare)
Skeena!
She is such a fiesty and strong little thing that a strong, mighty river suggested itself as her name once we met her.
It was an easy trip to pick her up - albeit a little cold -22 last night! She was a real trooper on the trip and she and Dexter are getting along well. The cats have yet to be convinced that this is a good idea but we'll keep you posted.
A few pics
stocazzo 02-04-2008, 07:32 PM PVR that might be the cutest puppy ever!
paulj 02-04-2008, 09:25 PM I bet Dexter is glad to have a thick coat as protection against those sharp puppy teeth. During the first weeks of owning my terrier, I had to wear leather gloves to protect my hands. Now at 10 years of age he's not much of a biter, but still enjoys 'worrying' one of those old torn gloves.
paulj
I bet Dexter is glad to have a thick coat as protection against those sharp puppy teeth....
You're not kidding! I may have to take to wearing gloves too. Skeena is already shredding toys and Dexter is having to be quite careful not to let her get underneath him.
The dangly bits don't have a protective coat!
StevieSegel 02-04-2008, 10:29 PM aaawwwww...........how cute is that :)
Twilightzero 02-05-2008, 01:02 PM CUUUUUUUUTE!
She looks like she's gonna be a handful too!!
wolfhounder 02-05-2008, 03:59 PM so, pretty much the cutest puppy, like---ever!
Brave Little Toaster 02-13-2008, 01:59 PM Awww! She's darling!
Yup, cute as a bug's ear.
Speaking of ears, both of Skeena's are up now, she's also growing like a weed.
The cats are still not very impressed, however.
