: Surgery Tomorrow
JPH102900 01-28-2008, 11:19 PM Our little mini dachshund is going in for some surgery tomorrow. He has a broken tooth that is infected. I am a little worried because he is 12 years old and I have heard that the anesthesia can be bad for older dogs and that they might not wake up. Does anyone have any experience with this? He is a really healthy dog and still acts like a puppy. I am just really worried about him.

UnoKitty 01-28-2008, 11:34 PM Thats a beautiful dog! My perception is that 12 years isn't that old for a dog that size.
Just had a bit of minor surgery myself. First time I was ever put under by a medical professional. Didn't like it one bit. Did worry a bit. But everything was fine.
I suspect that your puppy's experience will be analogous. Its okay to worry a bit - just don't over do it. But expect everything to be fine.
I've found that with most Vets I can negotiate when to bring the dog (or cat) home. I prefer to have the animal at home for the recovery. And have had good luck bringing them home earlier than the vet originally suggests. Though, the earlier that you can negotiate that the better.
Best of luck,
Uno
--Will offer a prayer to the big dog in the sky for you and your puppy...
carvingbarn 01-28-2008, 11:39 PM Good luck to your friend. We will keep good thoughts for him.
Aww he looks so sweet! Poor baby! I hope all goes well:)
Twilightzero 01-29-2008, 09:22 AM Awwwwwwwww cuuuuuuuuute :D He'll be fine, don't worry. And post more pics after he's home!!
ORANGEE 01-29-2008, 09:30 AM It is an issue when dogs get older, but for a 12 year old dachy, it shouldn't be an issue
POST MORE PIC's..............that pup is a cutie
We will keep our fingers (and toes) crossed - let us know
JPH102900 01-29-2008, 10:32 AM Thanks everybody! He goes to the vet tomorrow morning, so we are going to spend some extra time with him tonight. And I'll get some pictures posted when I get home from work.
bh241 01-29-2008, 10:37 AM We'll keep a paw crossed for the wee one. But, I agree 12 isn't that old for a small dog.
Gus is sending good surgery thoughts (and crossed paws)

In his own way, Boomer is keeping a paw crossed too.

Mrs.Anthony337 01-29-2008, 11:21 AM Aw, I'm sending good thoughts your way.
Nice that you can spend a bit of extra time with him before he goes in. That and lots of attention afterwards will make the ordeal worthwhile for him in terms of "secondary gain"!
kissya 01-29-2008, 04:53 PM Awwwww..what a cute dog. My Hedi was 15 when she had her first surgery..she did fine. Just follow all post-op orders.:)
cynlabs 01-29-2008, 04:55 PM Good luck! I am sure he'll be fine.
JPH102900 01-30-2008, 08:09 PM He came out of it ok and just has one less tooth now :) Here are the pics I promised

bh241 01-30-2008, 08:13 PM Glad to hear he's home and doing well. :)
russbuss 01-30-2008, 08:15 PM what a handsome dog you got there! i'm glad his surgery turned out well. i must ask though, what brand is that backpacker carrier you have and where can i get one? i have an "outward hound" carrier that you wear on your front but it can be a backbreaker. so that framepack thing looks like it might be good for my lazy dog that likes to be hauled around everywhere like a little prince.
cheers!

Its called "The Dog-Gone Device". We got it on Ebay from a seller with the name "Billandellie" (atleast I think that was their name) I think it was about 50 bucks. It is a great backpack, but I would not want a heavier dog on it for long distances.

mucha gracias for the tip. i'll try and hunt one down. my 15 pound sloth of a dog and my spine will appreciate this on hikes!
hiker chick 01-30-2008, 08:28 PM That's great news, JP -- good to hear he's back with you and fine. :)
And on the subject of a Dachsund, have you seen this old 1960s Disney movie? I saw something about it on TV this past weekend and since a colleague has two Dachsunds I tracked the DVD down and am awaiting its delivery. It gets great reviews from Amazon customers.

A poor title for a movie (I would frown on a title such as The Ugly Samoyed) but this looks like a sweet movie. Also stars a Great Dane.
Your pup might enjoy the flick as he convalesces...

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965);
There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy. You don't have to own a pet to enjoy this story of a happy suburban household gone to the dogs! The Garrisons (Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette) are the "proud parents" of three adorable dachshund pups -- and one overgrown Great Dane named Brutus, who nevertheless thinks of himself as a dainty dachsie. His identity crisis results in an uproarious series of household crises that reduce the Garrisons' house to shambles -- and viewers to howls of laughter!

wolfhounder 01-31-2008, 07:36 AM i am so happy your beautiful dog is home safe and sound!!
Twilightzero 01-31-2008, 10:07 AM He's adorable!! Although I think you're gonna give him a complex with that pink leash...
Hum ... I'm torn with that carrier. I'm wondering how it is on the back? You know doxies and all the back problems they can have. I have been looking for something for Rosie. She love to go to the dog park, but I have to carry her when when there are to many big dogs, afraid of other dogs. I get so many funny looks ... I just call her my bitch in a bag. LOL
This is an old picture, I wish I still had that bag ... old Gap book bag. Worked great !!!

Oh don't worry, thats actually a red one that faded. And the picture looks funny becuase it was taken by a professional photographer that did some stuff with the lighting. We actually brought him with us for our engagement pictures at the park and he took some really good pictures.

Since he is a short dachshund, we put a towel in the bottom of the bag and most of his weight actually gets distributed away from his back so he has always been ok.
wolfhounder 01-31-2008, 01:22 PM That is a great little carrier! i want one!!!
