Hello everyone, been at the EOC for a while but just purchased my brand new E least night. Woo Hooo...
My questions is, has anyone heard of a automotive sealant called cilajet?
The sales guy was pushing this hard the whole evening, that's what led me to believe that it is a cash cow for the dealer. Any body heard of this stuff? Cilajet
and for all of you who love pic's, here you go.

All the dealers push their own "sealant" and "fabric guard". Huge money makers for the dealership. They usually mark up the "treatments" anywhere from 300% to 1000%. If you feel you need it, any good Detailing shop can do sealant for about $150, or you can do it yourself for about $35.

Don't do it. I used to work at a Caddy dealer many years ago in the detail dept. Whenever a paint sealant sale would come along, I would go th the parts dept, get the 10$ bottle of sealant and slap it on haphazardly. It took me about 1/2 an hour to do a big ass caddy and down the road she went. BIG WASTE OF YOUR MONEY!!!!

Google!

Yes, it is one of a half-dozen "exclusive" paint sealer products sold by car dealerships. Do they work? Sure they do, for about a year or so. Warranted for 10? Sure, but how many "claims" will anybody file 'cause it doesn't quite bead up water like it used too? Zero. Their sole purpose is to boost the Dealer's profit on a sale. A high-end treatment like cilajet costs the Dealer about $125 per car, including the hour labor to apply it. If your lucky, someone who actually knows how to apply it will do the job (i.e. they will contract it out to a local car detail shop). Likely it will be a quick spray-job by their lot-monkey, in-between his moving cars into and out of the service dept. You can get the same thing done at any good Car Detailer for about that same price ($125 to $150), and by an expert, someone who does it for a living.

That's almost as bad as the quote I got from Rodger's Honda in Shelby for side steps for the Element --- $1,000.00 (installed of course) Gotta give the plug for a dealer when they deserve it, right?

I came across this blog with looking up the cilajet product for my parents Honda. The dealer was selling the cilajet product to them for $595. After reading the blogs, I called around to the local detail shops and no one carries cilajet. They had other paint sealants but my parents wanted cilajet on their vehicle because someone they knew recommended it. I did some research on cilajet and found out that it is sold exclusively to dealers. The other products at the detailer were less expensive. I was quoted $165 with it applied but my parents wanted to go with cilajet even though it was more expensive. They like the fact that it comes with a 10 year new car warranty which the other products did not have. I spoke to their salesman and asked them to lower the price but did not have any success. He did tell me that their company pays approximately $275 for the product and the dealer makes a small profit on it. I did manage to get the salesman to have it applied to the wheels for free. At least my efforts did not end up in vain!

The dealer tried to sell me the sealing stuff when I bought my E. I told him I would not need it as I use a good quality wax and detail it every 4-6 months. They tried telling me that it would make the paint shine for 10 years and I would not ever need to wax it again.
Bah, Nothing beats a good coat of quality wax. If done correctly and a few times a year, it will keep your paint looking new for more than 10 years. My dads 66 stingray still has the original paint and looks factory fresh.

I recently got the cilajet put on my car as well. It was from Euro Motor Cars Mercedes in Bethesda MD. I have never seen a shine on a car especially an S550 like this in my life. I was a bit apprehensive at first....i wasn't gonna put anything on my car but the weirdest thing happened. I have also read this happenning to someone else online.

When they pulled the car up from clean up. They put it right next to another one that was sold i guess. It was the same color only it looked better then the one I was buying. I guess it was shinier or looked wet. I asked the salesman what the difference was and he said the other car was treated with Cilajet.

I had to get mine done too. They charged $895 for it. Looking online it appears they are selling it for less in non-highline dealers. Oh well, I love it though and its been 4 months....no waxing and the car looks insane everytime i wash it.
