Found a pair of mid-bass subs that look like a direct replacement for the stock speaker (aside from being single voice coil not dual). They are Kicker SSmb6 6.5". Of course you only need one, but they come in pairs. I plan on researching this more and determining if this would be an easy replacement, etc. I'm curious if anyone would be interest in going halves on a set. Let me know. Shipped from my house to yours would probably be around $50.

What is the expected improvement? ....significant?

Crutchfield sells a 6.5 JBL sub but it's a single voice coil. How would you hook up you're wires for a single voice coil.
Haven't figured that out yet. May just use one channel. May get rid of stock amp. Already hung 2 channel under driver seat for additional subs under rear seats, just spliced into preamp signal wire so the stock amp and sub are still working as well. It's a cool setup because the stock head unit has a separate woofer control (though maybe after market units have this feature too now, i haven't been in the market for a while).
Don't want to by a pair of speakers just yet to test it out. I'll wait till the stock one blows.

post some spec of the sub please. i'm done with mike's mod and wouldn't mind a change of sub
what is mike's mod? Care to share? :)
Kicker SSMB6 specs: 4ohm, 125 rms, sens 88db, freq resp 30-500Hz, cutout 5-5/8in, depth 2in
Part of attraction to this speaker is the shallow depth. And of course Kicker is solid stuff.
Install details have not yet been fully explored.

These are pics of my JL. I sealed up the enclosure so it's no longer ported. Put some decent power behind it and it hits pretty well for a puny little woofer. Sealing up the enclosure results in tighter, more musical bass. The
kicker might be a good compromise if we had mounting depth issues, but the JL and the Elemental designs subs both fit with no depth issues.
Thanks rotomoto, i hadn't taken the stock sub apart yet and just assumed there might be depth issues. In that case, for my part, i'd just go with Kicker to match the other stuff i installed.
Nice job sealing up the enclosure, bet that cleans up the bass--it's always sounded dirty to me and i figured it was just a poor quality driver. When i upgrade mine i think i'll do the same.
If anyone has any amp wiring knowledge they want to drop here, that would be sweet.
