Does anyone know the best tire pressure for driving in ice. My offroad mudding experience tells me to drop the air pressure way down as if I were driving in mud or sand. Any ideas?

Lowering the tire pressure works well for loose non compacted surfaces. However when Ice racing they boost the tire pressure to stiffen the Ice picks in the tread.

We, however do not have Ice pick tires on our cars, and Ice is a solid surface.
Lowering the tire pressure on the street, will affect safety/tire life, in a negative way.

The best thing you can do is nothing to the tire pressure with regular tires.

 you can actually drive on ice?

I'm with Dom on this one, studded tires w/normal inflation (or a tad more).

Any ideas?

A long time ago (late 80s?)I heard that lowering them a bit (not as much as mud/sand, but same concept) would help in snow and maybe ice/snow.

I tried it a few times (everywhere from 5 to 20psi less on a 35psi tire) and it didn't seem to help at all. It even seemed to make things worse.

Since then, (I tried it again once more in the late 90s with crappy results), I've been using "normal" tire pressures in ice/snow conditions.

I've never seen a recomendation by tire/auto manufactures to adjust the tp for ice. I've seen it for mud and sand though.

Just my opinion, but i say leave 'em alone.

If Honda wanted the tire pressure to be lowered for ice then I'm sure that they would have engineered some overly complicated device to automatically deflate the tires when the ECU sensed intake temperatures that were conducive to ice formation! Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah:roll::lol:

You could try it but I'm thinkin that it won't help much. I hate winter.

And then Big Brother would mandate it to protect us from ourselves. Because we all know we can't think for ourselves.
