: Question about FM Boosters
Snuffleupagus 02-24-2008, 11:56 PM Hi guys,
I have a Nuvi 750 that has an FM transmitter built in. I want to listen to my Nuvi through my stereo but I want to use the built in FM transmitter instead of having a cable plugged in to my AUX jack. Basically I'm trying to keep the cabling as minimized as possible.
The problem is the Nuvi's FM transmitter is under powered. I would get some interference or lose signal from the Nuvi altogether when I drive through certain areas even though my device is sitting at my dash.
So the question is: would installing a FM booster help me with my weak FM transmitter device?
Thanks in advance.
Eww-an E 02-25-2008, 04:03 AM Don't waste your time/money trying to improve an FM transmitters performance in anyway,it's just not worth it.You can take apart the factory aux.dash socket and simply plug your units output jack into it,hidden behind your dash. This way you will get the best sound quality and you won't have an unsightly wire draped across you dash.

Hi Eww-an E,
What I'd like to do is have a "non-wired" setup for my Nuvi GPS and avoid cables actually coming from my device. The Nuvi is powered from the mount and the power cable is plugged to the mount. All you do is just clip and un-clip the the Nuvi and go.
I'd like to stay with that idea if I can. Yeah, I know, it's only an extra step but I'm also trying to go for a "clean" look.
I do have running a cable under the dash to the AUX jack as a backup plan. And if I can't come up of an acceptable "wireless" solution, that's what I'll do.
Thanks so much for your input. :)
MikeQBF 02-25-2008, 10:54 AM These sort of micro-transmitters will be marginal in the E. The antenna location in the back completely blocked by sheet metal is the biggest issue - the transmitter design "assumes" a clear shot through glass to either a fender-mounted or even an in-glass antenna not but two or three feet away.
Also, the externally-amplifed E antenna works against you, too, because the amplifier is nonselective. It amplifies everything, and the little microtransmitter signal has a tougher time fighting through the clutter.
No doubt some folks have had some success, but the deck is stacked against it.

Thank you for the great info, MikeQBF. I figured the antenna location above the roof in the back would be an issue. I did not realize the E's antenna was externally-amplified.
Well, here's another dumb question then: Would a FM Filter work?
Thanks for your input.
MikeQBF 02-25-2008, 02:37 PM Yeah, the antenna is externally amplified to make-up for the small size.
I don't think an FM filter is going to help. One problem you're probably fighting is interference from regular FM stations, and the filter is designed to allow them through while taking care of problems from, for instance, TV stations. If you could try a filter for free it would be worth it, but odds are that it won't help and you'd be money out to buy one just to try.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to avoid having to plug a cable to the Nuvi but it looks like I'll be going with direct connect to the AUX as Eww-an E has recommended. I'll just find a way to make it as discreet as possible.
Thanks, guys, for your input. I truly appreciate it.
Eww-an E 02-26-2008, 12:39 AM Your welcome:) Good Luck.
