: Blackout or Brownout
chozn4service 02-27-2008, 06:28 AM Happen to be watching news on yesterday on the blackout happening in Florida and saw a Galapagos Green Element with side steps trying to make a slight left turn at an intersection that had no working lights. I thought some sort of black mid-size car with no regard to the situation was going to hit it the E though they all were creeping through the intersection. The Element driver did turn back to his/her right to ensure no contact was made.
It must have been a AP feed of video as CNN, MSNBC and FoxNews had the same footage and again, this morning on The Today Show, they showed the same footage with the Element.
Twilightzero 02-27-2008, 08:06 AM Most people have ZERO brain and don't remember a damn thing from their driver's training. I believe in most places if the stoplight is out, treat it as a stop sign. Works perfectly well when people remember, is utter chaos when they don't :\
But please, think about the E-ple!! Oh the E-manity! Ok I'm done now...

Yea, when the light is out, you treat it as a 4-Way stop sign. I was watching people not even stopping at all. Just bogarding their way through the intersections. There weren't enough police officers to have at every intersection I'm sure and with power out, alarms were going off and you don't know if they were real alarms or power failure alarms or people taking advantage of the situation. Sad!
When the light is out it's a 4 way stop, people!
Around here, it means WHHEEEEE.... no stoppy!!!

During emergency situations, like a blackout, I have NO question that's the case.
That said, there are stoplights on the Jeff Davis parkway (US-1) southbound that are off permanently and I don't stop at those. :) It's essentially a 1-way but.. yeah.
tribalelement 02-27-2008, 09:21 AM (NBP) is close to black out :lol:

I have found that there are a lot of drivers in FL that do not have a high regard for the law. Makes driving interesting.
We also have a lot of hit and run accidents. I think that's why they kept no fault, so all these hit and run drivers can get away.

My kiddo recently moved to FL, and complains all the time about the drivers, she thought Houstonians were bad till she moved to FL!
Twilightzero 02-27-2008, 12:58 PM I can't imagine driving in FL! If I was there I'd be installing one of those train horns and using it daily!
EL-MT 02-27-2008, 01:45 PM I swear there is a place that just hands out drives licenses to anybody who wants one. One way to put a positive spin on this, is when this happens and somebody becomes baffled by a malfunctioning stop light it gives you an opportunity to give somebody the finger up close and without guilt.
pxpaulx 02-27-2008, 01:55 PM Just got back from vacationing down there yesterday, thankfully missed the blackouts - i would have feared for my life without traffic signals in that part of the world! and though i live in MN, i'm originally from Toronto which has its' own fair share of bad drivers. Miami definitely takes the cake though, I couldn't live there just for that reason (as tempting as 80 degrees in february can be).
PostShooter 02-27-2008, 02:44 PM I lived from birth to 35 years in Texas and the only time I ever heard a horn was 2 seconds before a crash or when sitting at a red light and you saw your buddy across the way in his pick 'em up truck and wanted to say "hi." Here, drivers feel if they don't use their horns at least three times a day, they will have that constitutionally mandated right taken away from them. I have never lived in a place where I felt so threatened on the road. My wife and I have both had cars totalled in the past 9 months, but perhaps that's not such a bad thing 'cause it brought me to the kingdom of "E." Personally, I think it comes from drivers down here coming from areas where the first one to the intersection gets through the intersection and to Heck with everyone else.

Some of Texas is still that way. I got a point off on my driver's test when I was 16 by honking and waving to a friend.
Twilightzero 02-27-2008, 04:05 PM I don't use my horn unless it's either emergency safety related or you've REALLY pissed me off. Hence my want to install one of the train horns so you know when I honk, I REALLY mean it!

Well now, maybe the Tampa St Pete area with it's "elder' drivers, but believe me when I say, drivers in Atlanta drive like that when the lights DO work! Try going anywhere in that town on a Friday afternoon when it rains-fugeddaboutit!! (I was young and pretty til 30 years of ATl traffic turned me gray!)
