: How Smart is your dog?

Came across this news article this morning. I don't have a dog (and I am not sure it would work with cats or birds), but there are so many of you here in the EOC, I had to share.

Doesn't appear free, but I never clicked through the website to see how much they want for it.

I already know my cat is really stupid. I love her very much and she's adorable. But man, she is stupid.

I don't need a test to know that my dog is stupid. Well, he just decides to be stupid when it is convenient for him. But he somehow figures a way to get into EVERYTHING! :D

:D

I have always had a problem with the "dog intelligence" tests because of the dramatic differences in temperaments between dogs and, particularly, between breeds. Some breeds (terriers for example) basically expect you to adapt to their world. Others are very oriented towards pleasing you or performing certain tasks on command.

I have been told goldens are the blondes of the dog world. I am not saying my dog is stupid. But more than once when we have been out for walks i have been waiting for him to walk right into the bumper of a parked car.

I can so relate to that. One of ours - Gus, bless his heart, ran smack into a tree one day when he was chasing a squirrel... :???:

And that's exactly a big part of the problem with "intelligence" tests with cats and dogs. Cats are like you describe terriers, only more so. But if you watch them trying to figure something out, they can be VERY smart. Or very dumb like my little grey kitty...

Our big male cat routinely runs into the trash can in the kitchen. He gets so excited when he hears the dinner call, he forgets to turn or jump...

My neighbors have two Afghan hounds-THEY are the dumbest dogs ever hands down, or possibly the most brain damaged. They are in a fenced back yard that runs alongside the road. These two dogs chase the cars as they pass. Okay in one direction, they just smack into the fence. Chasing cars the other way they run smack into a huge old pine tree. It sounds like gunshots when they hit-their "parents" obviously aren't too bright either....this has gone on for years..:mad:

When my dog feeds me, cleans up after me, showers me, and pays for my medical bills, I will claim intelligence. Until then, I am mere servant.

When it comes to day-to-day activities, my pack of three beagles rate just below Forrest Gump :???: in the intelligence department. But when it comes to searching, finding and acquiring stealing really food...I have a "Winston Churchill" (the influential statesman), a "Roger Federer" (the genius athelete), and an "Albert Einstein" (physics genius).:D

You know I find it extremely troubling that I cannot dispute this statement...

Maybe these guys aren't as dumb as we think... :)

No kiddn'. How many other animals have been able to just waltz in, occupy our homes, get doted on at every whimper, and not to mention we will readily take care of their offspring for them.

Who owns who?

You think that's bad, try cat ownership. Or as it's called by the cat crowd, "Thank you for allowing me continued occupancy at this residence, your worship, and would you like a bit of tuna?"

I think I have posted this before over in the Joke thread, but this would be an appropriate time and place to re-post it here . . .

As seen in a cat's diary:

Day 183 of my captivity... My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction that I get from clawing their furniture.

Tomorrow I will eat another houseplant.

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded - must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. I must remember to try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear in their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was... Hmmm, that did not work according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing "allergies." I must learn what this is and how I may use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I have patience, I can wait, it is only a matter of time...
