: Sudden loss of power while accelerating

An interesting thing happened to me the other day as I was about to pass a slow moving truck on an old country road. I have a 5sp manual transmission and as I was accelerating through 2nd gear, there was a sudden loss of power as if the engine suddenly forced the car to slow down as I pressed down on the accelerator. It was a really weird sensation (and scary too because there was a car coming down head on) and I quickly shifted into 3rd gear and got moving again. I didn't get a chance to look down at the guages (things were happening too fast) but it certainly didn't sound like I was over revving the engine. I've been driving a stick for over 20 years and this is the first time something like this happened to me.

Well, in checking the manual, it does say that if you hit the red zone, the onboard computer will cut the engine temporarily. I guess my E needs me to shift through the gears a lot faster than my old Civic which could do 50mph in 2nd gear!

I've been noticing that I need to really change how I drive my E. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE driving my E, it's a great deal of fun but it certainly is different than what I have been used to driving.

If you redline the E, as you have discovered, the rev limiter will shut you down. I've done it myself, particularily in 2nd gear as this little beasty revs so high, so quick. Just go to 3 and keep your foot in it! Oh, and don't pass when there is oncoming traffic.

Yup...I went from an S2000 to a 2002 Civic Si to the E. I am really glad I had the Si in between...it certainly helped the transition.

Now my del Sol feels like a Formula 1 car :D

HAHA! Tell me about it. I used to have a built B16A turbo Civic. On 10psi, it put 240 to the wheels, and I drove daily on 16psi+. I used to outrun 360 Modena's from a dead start. Now that I've had my Element (and a Lexus SC300 in between), my buddies stock WRX feels like a top fuel dragster to me...
