: Mileage on New EX
scenicexplorer 03-31-2008, 11:29 PM Hi Everyone!
I am considering trading in my 1997 CRV for a new 2008 Element EX 4WD. My biggest concern is gas mileage. I know the numbers on the sticker can range from 15 up to 29, so I was wondering what you all get for mileage on the 08 EX 4WD?
I get 22 city commuting into Denver now and can get up to 26-28 on highway(depending on conditions). Are any of you finding the new element comparable to those numbers?
Thanks!
Eric
Wyldfire 04-01-2008, 05:25 PM We are averaging 26.6 on long trips, and 22 for around town errands.
Jet109 04-01-2008, 06:00 PM Our SC is still very new with a new and tight engine :D. We just averaged about 26 mpg on a long trip. Once, going down from mountain elevation, we got close to 33 mpg. We're still not sure if that can be accurate.
Anyway, we gave our daughter our '97 CRV and bought the Element. We're not a bit sorry! The E. is getting every bit as good mpg as our CRV did.
Local_Barista 04-01-2008, 06:28 PM When I drove from Roseville to San Diego- 521 miles one way- I had to fill up a total of three times- a lot was LA traffic. So, I went 1042 miles on three tanks of gas. So I guess I averaged about 23mpg. The trip down there we had an extra 600lbs in the car though- all of our stuff plus 500lbs of coffee. But its much better then when I had my Jeep- I made the same drive, without the coffee, and I had to fill up NINE times round trip! BLAH!
jackson29 04-01-2008, 09:46 PM I got about 290mpg on a tank before my fuel light came on and that's city and some highway driving.
Brawsie 04-02-2008, 08:16 AM I'm getting a little more than 18 in town only. I drive naughty tho.
Took a road trip a while back and avg'd 23.
Edit:
i also run ETOH instead of regular.
The_Gut 04-02-2008, 08:22 AM I have a LX AWD - so it should be the same as the EX. My Element is new, with only a bit over 3000 miles on it. Mileage has been variable. One tank was only 19 miles per gallon. More typical appears to be 22.4 to 23.2, mostly city. A road trip to Michigan when it had less than 1000 miles on it, and it was fairly heavily loaded, yielded only 24.3 MPG highway.
I drive like a grandma on her sunday afternoon after church drive, however.
BobTheCarGuy 04-02-2008, 10:57 AM I'm averaging about 20 after 10,000 miles.
But where I live is constant stop-and-crawl, so I'm happy to be getting as mush as that, (that kind of driving just murders gas mileage).
gr8fl_2 04-02-2008, 11:49 AM Avg. 21 to 23 Mpg. after 8,000 miles.
Bobman79 04-02-2008, 12:00 PM I'm averaging 19-20 around town, though I'm not light on the accelerator and I noticed that putting the Michelin LTX tires seems to have bumped me down about 1mpg. On the highway, I'm still getting 25-26 pretty consistently, and continue to find driving the curvy backroad highways at 55 mph pushes me to 28.
spoonido 04-02-2008, 12:58 PM My brand new "Kiwi-On-A-Stick" EX with manual transmission got 24.4mpg on its first tankful driving around town.:)
2008 4WD EX, just bought this month.
I've filled up twice. I got 23.5 on the last tank with tires slightly under inflated (about 30psi) out of the dealer and 23.8 on properly inflated tires.
Seems my gas light will come on with about 4-5 gallons left in the tank, so thats kind of nice to me. In my last car when the light came one, you had about 40 miles before you better think about calling someone. haha. Seeing only 250mi on the trip odometer when the tank is at 1/4th is kind of disheartening, but the numbers are showing its right where it should be. I guess its a matter of guage perspective and its something I'll get used to.
I think the sticker that came with mine said 21mpg for city and 25 for highway. So, I can't complain too much.
Bike Zen 04-08-2008, 01:09 PM Ive got roughly 8K on my 08 AT and I have been consistently getting 19mpg on a mix of city/hwy miles.
On road trips (loaded) I have been getting around 22mpg
At 6k I changed oil (Mobil 1)
I try to keep the R's down when possible (I'm not a lead foot)
AppleCrate 04-08-2008, 03:16 PM I just fueled up for the first time since I picked up my E last Saturday. Mostly intown driving with a fair amount of stopping and starting. And I may have a slightly heavy foot as I'm getting used to it.
I got 18.43 M.P.G. with my first tank.
Speedy Toaster Dave 04-08-2008, 03:36 PM i get 20,21 city and 23-25 on a trip...:D
spoonido 04-08-2008, 06:28 PM Wow, guys - that's interesting. There were only two manual transmission EXs in all of southern California, and I had to have one in spite of the published statistics claiming lower fuel economy for the stick. To my shock, the window sticker on my kiwi at the dealer told me to expect "city MPG 18 / highway MPG 23." My second fill-up gave me an even 25 MPG driving around Los Angeles. Admittedly I 'm taking it really easy on the gas pedal. Even though I drive until nearly empty, my fuel light has never lit, MFCT. Are you on "E" when it lights?
fly104857 04-08-2008, 09:14 PM I just filled up today after driving 35 miles w/the low fuel light on. I was surprised to see it only took 13.4 gals. So, I believe as another posted that the light comes on w/ more than the 2.9 left thats stated in the manual. I know that the needle was below E. I got 278 miles on that 13.4 gals which averages to respectable 21 mpg on the first tank. It was a mix of hwy/cty.
tribalelement 04-08-2008, 11:45 PM 11.000 miles just drove 311.8 miles on 13.4 mostly 97% freeways 65-85mph

Its very close, but slightly above it. Also, forgot to note...my daily commute is a 10 mile straight shot with about 11 stop lights and 26-40mph variable street traffic. No real room to pass people (and no real point since you're going to be held up a few cars ahead anyway), but the flow is pretty steady.
Afterwork, 10mi straight back. I probably average 8-10k miles a year on my vehicles discounting a 450mi round trip maybe twice a year.
Paws4E 04-09-2008, 02:37 PM I just filled up for the first time this week the light had just come on and I put 12.17 gallons in. I think the owners manual said you have a little over 2.5 gallons left when the light comes on. Anyway, first tank averaged about 19 gallons. MR PAWS4E says I am a lead foot...... I think he drives like a senior citizen with goldfish on the seat:rolleyes:. Oh that's right he has an AARP card I don't.
He's at work right now so I can FINALLY get a word in on this forum:D

Factors that may have a dramatic effect on gas mileage include tire pressure, snow, mountains, driving habits, city to highway ratio. I live in a pancake flat area near Detroit so I know nothing of mountains and not a lot about snow or at least not much about a lot of snow. Here's what I know about tire pressure. I had a 2001 Tacoma and recorded the mileage and gallons used for every tank of gas for over a year. I calculated that two ways. The first way was by the mpg for each tank. The second way was by dividing the cumulative miles by the cumulative gallons. In this way, I was not simply averaging the average mileage for each tankful. I created bar charts for both calculation methods. The cumulative method showed a pretty consistent average of 19 mpg with some 18's and a couple of 17's. The tank at a time method showed greater variation of course and greater margin of error, but allowed me to see tank to tank differences attributable to vacation trips of mostly highway driving versus a more normal mix of city and highway. My normal mixed driving would run between 18 and 20 mpg while highway trips would run 20 to 22. At one point, I noticed a downward trend into the 15 to 16 mpg range. I found my tire pressure was about 5 pounds psi too low. I properly inflated the tires and the gas mileage immediately returned to the normal range.
I was told (by an unconfirmed source) that tires will burst or be irreparably damaged at 12 pounds psi on the low end and at about 100 pounds psi at the high end. With typical tire pressures being in the 30-35 pound psi vicinity, this indicates that at least from a safety perspective, there is more margin of error on the over-inflated side than the under-inflated side. Of course there are other factors to consider like, tread wear, ride comfort, etc. From strictly a gas mileage stand point, you are probably better off with tire 5 pounds high than 5 pounds low.
Oh yeah, and drive like you've got goldfish on the seat. It will drive your mileage up and your wife crazy:)
air1mtt 04-09-2008, 10:05 PM if you are looking for good mileage this is not the car for you. unless you want to drive like you are on eggshells and just nurse it along. otherwise its a great call
tribalelement 04-09-2008, 10:21 PM nobody is looking for good gas mileage:shock: we just sharing success :)and failure:mad:
MCAJE 04-10-2008, 09:36 AM 2008 EX AWD
19.0 mostly city driving
22.5 mixed driving
24.9 highway
spoonido 04-10-2008, 10:32 AM It really is amazing how different mileage is for what is essentially the same vehicle. It's like those studies of identical twins separated at birth, and seeing the similarities and differences. Once the E leaves the showroom (or previous owner), it's up to the individual driver and geography to determine fuel economy.
I've been driving my Kiwi like it's on eggs while getting used to driving it. What that has shown me is how FAST everyone is driving out there! Now I'm constantly being cut off on the highways! But it’s been good for me to slow down. We should all slow down and conserve fuel. Far too many people have been killed for that stinkin’ mid-east oil. (Steps off soap box.)
Wrigley Selhurst 04-11-2008, 10:38 PM My 6 week old 2wd lx manual is getting about 24 in town and 29.5 on highway, I am hoping to break the 30 mpg when she has loosened up a little.
tangerine07lx 04-11-2008, 11:30 PM my 07 2wd lx mt has been getting a constant 18-20mpg city, 22-24mpg highway since it was brand new, it has 16,500 miles on it now.
Cornball 04-12-2008, 10:56 AM Have ~ 12,000 miles on my 08 EX 2WD.
Getting around 19-21 in city (I drive 11 miles in stop and go traffic to work).
Usually get 23-26 MPG on highway....depends on headwind, how much in a hurry I'm in, etc. :)
