My wife and I lived in TX for 3 years while she was stationed in San Antonio, and we really miss the great BBQ. Nobody in Ohio has a clue how to smoke a brisket like Rudy's BBQ in Leon Springs. Might be time for a road trip... 2000 miles for lunch, yeah that sounds reasonable...

El Paso is a great town! You have mountains and a state perk right smack dab in the middle of them. You have Mexico close by. You are just over 100 miles to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is only 300 miles to Big Bend NP. It is an hour to White Sands. You can be in the Gila Wilderness in 2-3 hours. You can be skiing at Cloudcroft in 2 hours.

Plus you have Chicos Tacos!

El Paso is awesome. It just might not be if you want everything green.

We are a big state with alot of open country. There are massive projects going on here. Those folks in Cali (really a nice little state) think they are green, but we produce more wind power. It is just hard for folks to accept that Texas could do such a thing since we have all those oil wells, refineries, and pickups.

For as bad a rap that Dub-ya gets on the environment (much of it deserved), his ranch is 10 times more green than Al Gore's palace in Tennessee. It's smaller, built of native materials, is energy efficient, I believe he has active and passive solar, collects rainwater off the roof to water the lawn, etc. Really a model for what others should be doing.

And for further facts on actual wind output as it aint even close for second place.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_Texas

Texas 4356 Megawatts
Cali 2438 Megawatts

To put it in further perspective if Texas were still it's own country it would be 6th in the world in wind power generation.

Interesting, I had no idea Texas had that much wind power investment. I knew about several HUGE projects in CA, but upon further reading it looks like they're fairly localized in high wind passes and whatnot. Thanks for the info!

Too funny!

That reminds me of something else I like about the Big Bend area:

No radio. No TV. The Sunday paper is delivered three days late on Wednesday (thats when the El Paso paper make it there). It used to be no cel service and then ATT had to go put a tower in Terlingua for all the chili cookoff folks. But the cel coverage sucks so it is like no coverage.

Gotta love the scale of this place. The mrs & I were planning our VT vacation & kept saying we didn't want to drive that far...then we looked at the legend. Hell the whole state is shorter than Austin to Dallas.

It's within about 20-30 miles difference for me to drive 200+ miles over the border to New Orleans vs in state to Big Bend from Austin. I believe the 1st mile marker says something like 880 when you cross the border on I-10 at Orange if you want the East to West distance to El Paso by highway WITHIN the state.

To add to the list:
-Topless Co-eds on Barton Creek March to October
-Great mtbing along Barton Creek March to October :D
(it's not so bad the rest of the year either ;-)
-Clear rivers & clear skies you can swim & eat the fish safely (compared to Louisiana's green water & grey skies and NOBODY eats stuff from the Mississippi)
-Being able to have a picnic with my kid outdoors all but that one week of winter each year
-Seeing more different terrains & climates in one drive across the state than most REGIONS of the rest of the country. Gulf coast, marshes, prairies, limestone hills, deserts, mountains and a lot in between.

Orange, TX - Tallahassee, FL (601 miles)

Duh...I wasn't counting Texas. I was just thinking from the border you cross LA, MS, AL, FL. Not much to the AL coast, but no didn't forget AL, even though I've lost a few weekends in Gulf Shores. :D There was some locals bar on the back bay called the Keg I think out near Orange Beach. You literally walked thru this giant keg to get in...they served beer 'til waaaay late. Ahhh...to be in your 20's with disposable income. :D

The one thing I miss about LA is I could be in my office in Baton Rouge at 5 and drinking a beer on the white sandy beaches in Ft Walton/Destin area by 9. TX beaches are NO comparison to the emerald coast for the same 4 hr drive. :|
