Well, we didn't have to, but it seemed better for her.
We had a ~2 year old Black Lab, and it was clear that she would be happier with more room, and being out more. We have a relatively small fenced yard, and after my wife went back to work, she became very destructive and had to be put in a kennel during the day. Top that with her escaping from the fenced yard at least once a week, and being caught by someone 3-4 streets away, and it was clear that we had to find a solution.
Then, the golden opportunity. One of my wife's new coworkers just bought a house out in the country with several acres (there is a vinyard, and she's planning on keeping horses there too). She expressed an interest in taking Lola, and they worked it out today. I hope she'll be happier out there where she can run wild on the ranch.
Still, our older dog (+/- 5 year old Border Collie / Aussie mix) is far more low-key and not nearly as destructive, but seems disoriented by having her "sister" gone. Hopefully she'll be better able to adjust.
