♪♫ Tiptoe through the window,
By the window, that is where I'll be.
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me!

Oh, tiptoe from the garden,
By the garden of the willow tree,
And tiptoe through the tulips with me!

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray,
We'll keep the showers away,
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight
Will you pardon me?
And tiptoe through the tulips with me! ♫♪

Canon Powershot SD700is with image stabilization, 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom. For a couple of these shots I used the digital macro setting.

Jet,

Sorry, but we have no idea what that purple flower is. We just take photos as we're cycling, if we see something interesting. That flower was in Queen Elizabeth Park, here in Vancouver. Someone else told me that they completely close up at night. Maybe someone else here knows . . . ?

Margaret
08-22-2008, 11:28 AM
That's in Queen E Park!!! I'm on my way! It's beautiful and it's been a few years since I've been there. Tomorrow is the day.

For the person looking for a good camera -make sure you get a good zoom rating. They may tell you that the computer can zoom it up but we all know that the quality isn't there when you do it that way. My camera is a Kodak Easyshare dx6490 with a 10x zoom. I can be in my car on the road and take a close up picture of a detail on a house, such as a roof bracket. I haven't got the macro worked out yet though. I'm very pleased with the camera and wouldn't trade it for any other.

I visited Longwood Gardens (http://www.longwoodgardens.org/) (finally!) this past Saturday. It was lovely. My impetus for finally getting there was the treehouse exhibit, it's a MUST SEE. The craftsmanship is exquisite. All were built with reclaimed wood.

I forgot to take along my good camera, but I had my $88 Target digital camera :) -g

Ditto :D

We purchased a house the end of January and this spring and summer was so exciting because every time I walked around my house I would find something new. Everything is pretty overgrown because the owner was older and just couldn't keep up with it, but she had some wonderful plantings around.

This year we were primarily concentrating on the interior and this fall and next year we'll get more into the landscaping. This thread has given me some great ideas . . .

Thanks to all who contribute!

They'll never be able to get Stanley Park back to it's spendlor because hundreds of hundred year old trees were blown over. Instead they're trying to use the clearings as a positive. Parking at one point has been moved inland where trees once were, so now there's more pedestrian space on the seawall, and now there are many points where you can look out to the water and see it, all because of the lack of trees. I've posted one of the trees the park decided to keep.

The day after the storm I rode my bike by it and took this picture. (We were sleeping on our boat in the marina on the other side of that tree when the storm happened.) I told the park official keeping guard over the area that it would be a real nice idea if they kept this tree where it was and let nature do its thing on it. We could think of it as kind of a memorial to the trees and there's such a beautiful setting all around it, it makes for a great picture.

They sort of did that. They cut it back quite severly and moved it off the seawall. Now all sorts of kids and tourists climb on it for pictures and new growth is coming out of the limbs. Everytime I ride by the overturned tree I smile and give it a pat on it's back.

Jet, that picture with the high POV wasn't Stanley Park but it's Queen Elizabeth Park. It isn't as renowned as Stanley Park but it still is a beauty. The land used to be a rock quarry and that's why the gardens are sunken way way down.

What are those flowers that you took, posted most recently? They sure are beautiful.

I hope to get to DC someday and see the blossoms. Nice job catching the splendor.

I always wondered what they do with the cherries? Or are they ornamental cherries that really don't produce edible fruit? Are there ornamental cherries like apples?
Think I will have another cup of coffee.:)

bassmangtk
04-02-2009, 11:28 AM
The cherries are most likely edible. The problem is that those are double-bloom varieties. When a flower is doubled, the stamens become petals, thus drastically reducing the reproductive ability of the flower. What cherries do form are then picked off by birds. I know none of you care about the science behind it, but it's what I live for so I can't help but explain it!

I love this D90. It's my first DSLR. Got it in November. It's pretty intuitive but I still have much to learn. Started out using the automatic settings and now am doing manual -- setting aperture and shutter speed. The lens is terrific, too. Nikon just announced they're coming out with a 10-24mm lens which would be fantastic to have.

The battery lasts forever -- have taken several hundred with plenty of juice to spare. Have never put in the spare battery. An 8-gig memory card has never come close to filling and I shoot superfine large jpegs.

All these pics are without tripod so the vibration reduction is certainly effective.

Cool! Thanks for the info. The D90 sounds like a winner; now I just need to find some $ to buy one!

Since this post is supposed to have flower pics here are some of mine with my 3 mp Olympus 730 SuperZoom. Macro mode works pretty well with this camera, however it performs poorly when it comes to low light situations (which seems to be a problem with Olympus DSLRs as well).

On your existing camera, try your macro setting with it zoomed as wide as it will go, then physically get closer to the flower. It creates a nice d.o.f. and helps on the sharpness. Also, try with and without the flash. Digital point and shoot cameras are notorious for over exposing the highlights, so see if you can set yours at (minus) -1/3 to -2/3. This might help, and it might not.

Why do you have to leave that garden/house????

Our camera sucks rocks, very little control I have on it. I've been playing with what few settings I do have, got some great forest shots I'll post in a few.

As far as why we have to leave, the house is in Rochester, MN and my new job is in Madison, WI. I'm not digging up the whole damn garden to take with, but I will probably be rebuilding it here once my wife has a job here and we have a house with a yard to tear up

Some more glorious pics from my wildflower garden!

The lupins have really taken off in the last week!

Another shot of the lupins backed by my new chocolate irises:

A few years ago we tried to transplant a real wild rose to our garden with less than spectacular results. Luckily, however, we found a tame "wild" rose for sale at a local garden place last year. It's settling in quite nicely and the blossoms are almost indistinguishable from the real thing!

1. Monticello flowers

I'll get some wild flowers from here in Utah together too, most still in the camera from this Spring and it's been a wet spring here so the flowers have been great!

Some new ones from the I-90 eastbound rest area at Lacrosse, WI. Every year they have stunning displays of flowers and this year is no exception!

Don't hurt me, but I'm pretty sure this is some sort of lily...(flower identification isn't one of my strong suits. If you can't eat it, I don't care what it's called.)

We have all seen those beautiful flowery Rose Parade floats every New Years morning, but until you've seen them up close you have really missed the real show.
This past Saturday Ms Jet forced me to take her to Pasedena and review the Floats. Wow, was I overwhelmed. What color, what craftmanship, the auroma.
Here are a few detail shots to prove my point.

Winter Olympics are coming to Vancouver in about ten days and here you wouldn't think it's winter. There are buds forming on the rhodos already. Really though it's going to be great because you don't freeze while in the city and there's lots of snow up at Whistler where most of the events take place.

Tomorrow I'll try to get a picture of the rhodo buds to post here. Anyone else getting an early spring?

I don't know if its a sign of early spring but I saw a Great Blue Heron. It flew low across my path while driving my E yesterday. Its a little early for a heron. There is still quite a bit of open water here even though its Feb.
Bring it on!
