: Bolt on Electric Hybrid Kit!
Alchemy 05-09-2008, 02:57 PM http://www.poulsenhybrid.com/index.html
This is a fantastic idea! Not sure it is right for the E though... think it might cave under ocasional offroading, and I'm curious how it would work with the 4WD.
I don't think it's available yet, but soon!
MikeQBF 05-09-2008, 09:23 PM "13.5 HP"? No way. Given the dimensional limitations of the stated design, that's absolute peak HP - a couple of seconds at best.
Take it from somebody with experience in electric cars and hybrids, this is either well-intended but delusional kitchen-table engineering, or pure snake oil... I can't quite figure out which.
Critical_level2 05-10-2008, 12:09 AM is 13.5 HP even enough to move something as heavy as the element?
Alchemy 05-10-2008, 03:45 AM the problem is IC engines HP rating is different than electric. Lame I know, but that's the way it works... 13.5 electric HP is actually quite significant.
Don't know about that - our hoover is 3 HP and stalls out on cat hair. Plus only a 15 mile range
Talk in the "real" automotive world is there will be production electrics on the road from several of the big auto man's within four years. BMW is putting a "reborn" electric Isetta, like they did with the MINI Cooper, into production - and several others have models in the works.

No, in this case it's a bogus number. I qualified my response with the fact that I own an electric car and have tinkered with them for years. I'm familiar with the pancake motor design these folks are using, and they are quoting very-short-term absolute peaks - 5-10 seconds, tops. I am fairly certain the continuous HP rating of each motor is in the 1.25 to 1.5 HP range, for a total of 3 HP total.
Also, production hybrid vehicles are much, much more than just an electric motor slapped in - CVT, lighter weight body components, aerodynamic changes, low-rolling resistance tires, and smaller ICE all make major contributions to efficiency. The CVT alone in some designs accounts for 30-35% of the gains!
Bottom line is that there will be negative "improvement" with the Poulsen setup - the microscopic amount of HP gained will be more than offset by the weight of the batteries and controller. If I hadn't run these kind of equations 100's of times in determining the cost/benefit of drivetrain designs I wouldn't be so adamant, but this "add-on hybrid" has kitchen-table wishful thinking written all over it.
Genom 05-12-2008, 07:48 AM What a bunch of sh!t...
I think stuff like this is going to be an unfortunate side effect of the rising cost of gasoline...a whole slew of half-baked Rube Goldberg ideas conjured up in the name of fuel economy.
Twilightzero 05-12-2008, 09:41 AM I was gonna say, an actual 13 HP electric motor has a sh!tload of torque. But you're right, looks like that's absolute peak. Might work on a skateboard though...
Hmmm...
Sounds about as likely as the Hydrogen gas generator kit (http://www.hydrogen-boost.com/) that is for sale on the internet.

Don't laugh, there was someone on here a while back who was testing them

Was there a report on the test?
Twilightzero 05-12-2008, 12:03 PM Was there a report on the test?
They said it didn't work very well on the Element engine but that they had some other vehicles (they named specific models but can't recall off the top of my head) that it worked much better on. I'll see if I can find the thread in a bit.

I believe this is the thread you are thinking of.

Yup that'd be the one, thx :D
Am I right in being suspicious given the tester had also been talked into being a distributor of this "system"?
Rocket Dog 05-12-2008, 12:20 PM I want to see a bolt-on nuclear reactor mod. I searched, didn't find any threads about it. I was thinking a light water moderated reactor would work best.

As a former submariner don't you have any connections in the Russian navy? They could probably supply you with one, cheap!
Might be a problem with a little "leakage" however.
:D

It's called Mr. Fusion.
:D
I have the design all done, now if I could just find a reliable supplier of antimatter...

You got that right. A free chest x-ray every thousand miles.

Put the film in the back of chair?

Ah Scotty, Patron Saint of engineers everywhere...*dreamy sigh* :D
protaganis 05-12-2008, 01:22 PM Sounds like Riff...Who's Riff? Let me check my notes:razz:
If we go nuclear, I want the orion option:evil:
If we're just stuck with reactors, I want a helium pebble bed system. Comparatively light weight and very easy to maintain. All I need is a rad suit.:-D

I'll go for pebble bed systems over traditional rod reactors any day!
Genom 05-12-2008, 02:01 PM You can all keep your crazy alternative fuel ideas...I'll stick with Liquid Schwartz.

I told you we should've put more than 5 bucks worth in!
protaganis 05-12-2008, 02:08 PM Oh come on, admit it. You wanna set off an Orion- pulsed nuclear drive when you're being tailgated:evil:
If you aren't familiar with the Orion drive, here you go:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_drive
Admittedly, yours would be a whole lot easier on the roads than mine:-P
dorienc 05-12-2008, 02:36 PM a graphite moderated breeder reactor, so I end up with more fuel than I started with! Maybe throw in a little deuterium so I can sell tritium to the DOD to replenish the nation's stockpile...
Hot Dang! This solves the energy crisis! And imagine how carefully everyone would drive if they were sitting behind a few million curies of fission products!
MikeQBF 05-12-2008, 02:44 PM I have the design all done, now if I could just find a reliable supplier of antimatter...
Well, you can find plenty of antimatter right here on EOC. Or is it actually called "doesn'tmatter"?
:-P

Does gas matter?
(or did I flunk physics?)
:)
protaganis 05-12-2008, 02:55 PM A buddy of mine transports radiological medicines and constantly complains that the idiots seem to take the stickers as target insignia... That and people have STOLEN highly radioctive meds, thinking they could sell them.
PVR, sit in a room with me after a Taco Bell and Special Ex Light night:shock:
Yup, gas matters.
