: HUGE GRIPE Regarding the Embassy Suites

Okay, let me preface this by saying this has NOTHING to do with Tom, Julie, Larry or any other E-vent staff.

But Embassy Suites double charged me! I offered a MC upon checking in, telling the young man I'd change that card to my Visa Friday morning.

I did just that and STILL, I find charges on both cards and am now having to furiously work to get this reversed so as not to be overdrawn on my MC.

OK but...what does that have to do with the front desk staff's hand shakes?

* grip *

Have you called the hotel? They ought to fix the problem with a single phone call.

They have a "grip" on money that doesn't belong to them, that's the problem ;-) Agreed, it should only take one phone call to fix, BUT, the time it takes to reverse the charge process will take longer. Obviously, he is seeing it online or something of that nature. They never credit it back as fast as they charge you for it :x

I think you should demand a free nights stay because of their screw-up

Just kidding!:) Sorry, bad humor. I'm just jealous I didn't get to go to any meets:-(. I had to go to the GFs family reunion. A friend of mine just got back from a VW type II meet. Anyway La Quinta has all those billboards that say "La Quinta, Spanish for ....." I usually say "La Quinta, Spanish for , good enough for a cheap hooker. My GF doesn't think it's funny either.

Oh, this is how EVERYBODY does it in the travel/tourism industry, and you're just finding out the hard way. The card you used to register is pre-charged with the full amount of the reservation to get approval that you have enough funds available to pay for your stay. If you close-out the account with that card, it draws on that pre-approval number and you're done.

HOWEVER...

Close your hotel account with cash or another credit card, and that pre-charge/pre-approval stays on the books until it expires - 8 to 10 days, I think. There is no apparent easy mechanism to back-out the pre-charge.

Think that's bad - the Hilton next door will not allow you to stay if you are cash-only. You present a credit card at check-in or you don't get a room. You can pay with cash, but see the above, your card is still going to get gigged for a couple of weeks.

I wish I could've been at the meet.

Anyhow, the Raddisson on Canal Street in New Orleans has a scam they pulled on me.

They have a sign at the front desk or I should say a VERY TINY sign on the wall behind the front desk- that says "All room keycards not returned directly to the front desk upon departure will be charged a $10 per card lost card fee to the room bill. No exceptions"

The instructions on the card sleeve, and in the in room Raddisson guide state, "Please leave your room key/keycard on your bed when checking out. It will be returned to the front desk by our housekeeping staff"

Guess what- we left our cards on the bed and a month later I found $20 charged to my Mastercard for "Lost room keys".

I called the Raddisson to complain and was told the sign behind the counter "Is correct, all other instructions were null and void." M/C wouldn't go to bat for me because of the low amount of money. Corporate Raddisson admitted it receives calls about room key "deposits" all the time and that customers should always take the key to the front counter, no matter what other information may be given.

Wonder how much extra $$$$'s they earn by this scam? Screw Raddisson!

Can anybody say "Class Action Lawsuit"? I always say that I'm a government employee. You usually get a discount and they are really good about fixing things when tell them that Uncle Sam doesn't like being s&*$ed by hotels.

I'll have to watch my MC bill carefully - the receipt they shoved under the door was fine though.

My girlfriend booked a separate room and when she found out she could not make it she phoned to cancel. They said they cancelled it but when she phoned back to double check later it was NOT cancelled. She asked for a cancellation number and they gave her #999999 ... yeah right.

She called again (directly each time so it was costing her for each phone call from Canada) and checked. Nope, still not cancelled! She asked to talk to the manager and complained. She got a cancellation number in her email after that.

I guess that's why they over booked 40+ rooms! <shudder> Now I'm concerned about the cancellation of the other hotel I made nearby.

I've never heard of this...but I'll find it and watch it. Why? I'll see anything with Tim Roth in it. He's a fine fine actor.

I have found the opposite to be true.

When I travel on the Governments dime, Embassy Suites charges me the maximum allowable daily rate (i.e. $199 a night in DC), but only charges me the regular rate ($129-$149) when my official stay is up and I extend my stay on my dime.

The same used to be true for airline tickets back when they had SATO. They paid someone $150 plus a free round trip ticket to get me on a plane that I didn't even want to get on, just so they could keep the $800 government rate fare for a $320 ticket.

The best travel rates I have found (hotel, car rental, etc...) are the AAA discount rates.

OUCH MCJAE! I did a lot of traveling with the Forest Service which I had to use my own credit card sometimes and said that I could only pay so much per diem, I usually stayed at a Holiday Inn Express but people usually were really accommodating, it sounds like greedy businesses just trying to steal as much as they can from the tax payer.

I have found the opposite to be true.

When I travel on the Governments dime, ...
This is a really mixed bag, and depends (BIG time) on the chain. Sometimes the gov rate is significantly lower than the lowest civilian rate (20% at some places!), and other places it's gouge-a-rama time. I always work the reservation site for the best rate when I can plan travel, and inquire about gov rate when it's unplanned, just showing-up at the desk.

What I find odd is not a single desk clerk has asked for my gov ID even when I'm getting a fantastic rate. In the grand scheme, they seem to not really care.

Little trick I learned a while back: Book at a hotel near the capital and tell them you want the jury duty rate

Sorry to hear about that, I hope you get it all sorted out soon!!

All is well, thanks everyone!
