: disconnecting the speedo?
whats happends if you disconnect the speedo....
with it being electronic will it mess it up or does it have a back up?
putting in new dash colors and lite, but have to disconnect everything...?
2003 silver e...18k miles no problems :P
Black Elephant 10-22-2003, 10:16 AM I had a prelude and the trick then was that you had to disconnet the entire gauge cluster. Here's where the problem starts. The Temp and Tach are used by the computer to control the VTEC system. So you would loose that also. Are you leasing.
marky 10-22-2003, 10:42 AM If you are just pulling the dash to do some work, you'll have no problems. If you mean disconnect the speedo to stop logging miles, the rest of the computer system will have problems. Pulling the dash will NOT reset the mileage. (sorry)
yes leasing.........18k in three months.....love that element....
so disconnecting is headaches?
Kayakin' Dan 10-27-2003, 02:17 AM You cannot, reset, reprogram, disconnect or otherwise tamper with the computer controls which includes the Speedo in new cars. Park it for 18 months and you may then resume driving without severe monetary penalties.
If you get caught dicking with the speedo or computer trying to affect the actual mileage indicated for the express purpose of ripping off your leasing company, it's called fraud and is a federal offense I believe.
MikeQBF 10-27-2003, 09:18 AM Nah... easy solution here. With that kind of mileage dewy's pretty much already bought the vehicle. He just needs to start saving for the buyout.
Leave the speedo/odo alone. You are so far behind the curve now that there is absolutely no way you're going to fool the leasing company - they can read through odometer fraud in a heartbeat. They make wads of revenue from people going over on their leases, so they are experts at it, and then some.
So park it, try to get a real loan and buy it from the leasing company, or save your sheckles for the buyout. All of those are far less expensive than lawyers, court time and the restitution and punis.
(Why in the Hell did you lease? You had some clue that you were a "high mileage" person - there is no way that somebody magically starts driving 6K a month.)
BriBoy01 10-27-2003, 07:44 PM How many miles did you get on your lease?
hownowcb 10-27-2003, 07:45 PM The odometer is just the clue for dummies, besides. People whose income depends on knowing how many miles have actually been put on a vehicle don't even need to know the odometer reading. Look at the wear on pedals, analyze the oil, mic the metal parts -- you can't fool the pros, and you'd be a fool to attempt it. The advice so far is great. Grow up and play honest; and quit trying to figure out how you can cheat. You could end up with the result of someone else's cheating; think about it!
lae10851 10-27-2003, 07:51 PM Duh - let me ask for advice on how to do something wrong on the boards - no one will ever know i did it - duh

He doesn't want to disconect the speedo to commit fraud, he wants to change the dash and the lite. He want to know if it is an easy process to disconect the speedo. He also seems to be asking if the is any problems with disconecting. I assume that he is worrried that if he disconects to work on it will his lease company think it was rolling back.
At least this is my take on his question.

Read his second post... the truth emerges.
HappyCamper 10-27-2003, 10:01 PM with it being electronic will it mess it up or does it have a back up?
IMHO it sounds like an honest question, and he's concerned that if he disconnects it, it will reset to zero and he will lose all those miles he's racked up. If so, he's apparently not concerned about end of lease issues.
If the original intent was fraudulent, I'd have to laugh that it was posted under "Ask the Dealer"
