I need some help from you guys. Not E related.
I am looking for some speaker enclosure things for a stereo I am putting in my boat. Several years ago I was replacing some speakers in my dad's BMW which he had purchased used. The previous owner had at one time had a decent system in it and had removed most of it when he traded it in. In the front door speaker locations there were rubber cup/bowl type cases that the speakers sat in. Does anyone know if they are aftermarket or oem and where I may be able to get some these days.
I have a marine grade stereo and speaker set but would like to add those enclosures to the back side of the speakers to help protect them from damage. I will be installing the speakers in some areas that are also used for storage and I don't want something snagging the wires or poking the cone etc.
Thanks for any help you guys might have for me.

Are you talking about speaker baffles? http://www.crutchfield.com/g_762/Foam-Speaker-Baffles.html?tp=660

Yes! You are awesome Al! I had no idea what they were called and what to look for.
I knew I could count on the EOC!

Another good reason of what this forum is all about.

Just be aware that they are just for protection...they are too flimsy to act as an enclosure. You just need some kind of baffle to keep the rear firing waves from cancelling out the forward firing waves.

Yeah, I read some of the reviews on the site. I will have to look into some options with protecting the speakers a bit more from things bumping into them. The waterproofing is not a real concern because they are marine speakers and will be in covered areas so I will probably keep looking.
Maybe I should just build a lightweight cover that can mount over the back of the speaker and be ported on the bottom.

For the 4x6 plates in the dash of my Jeep YJ, I used an inexpensive re-useable plastic food container for each speaker... Glad or Rubbermaid IIRC...
Had to trim one corner to fit around something... tape and an Exacto knife making sure that the cut was such that I could re-use the cutout in reverse.

Good idea. I just looked at the speakers and they are pretty well protected but it would be nice to add a little extra protection from objects.
Those foam speaker baffles really limit the low frequency response of the driver. Most car door and boat speakers are designed to play into 'free air.' The baffle is restricting the air flow.
I recommend cabletying the wire to the basket, and then use ties with eyes for securing the wire until you reach a common wire bundle.
The basket voids can be covered with a stiff screen or perforated metal cut to shape and riveted in place.
I've yet to see anyone stab a hole in a cone with a fishing pole, no matter how cluttered the boat. The sun and indiscretion with a power washer are the main culprits of speaker death.

Thanks for all of your input.
I was doing a bit more investigating into the placement of the speakers and such and noticed that the cone is pretty protected on the back side. I will take extra precautions to secure the wires out of the way from snags.
My boat is just under 17' so finding room for 4 speakers is a bit tricky. I have a great place for two in the rear just under the rear jump seats facing forward and the panels hinge up so I can access the backside and aim them a little better while cruising.
I am having a little bit of trouble finding the right spot with the other two and wonder if placing them along the center pass through facing each other about 1.5' apart would be a bad idea. The other place was under the dash at the feet of the two main seats facing rear. I would have to take out my teak map rack to make room but if the sound would be better from there then I don't mind. I will try and post some pictures if anyone wants.
If any of you mobile audio folks have any thoughts please let me know.
