Most of my driving is around town. Unfortunately the town boasts the monicker "The Hill City" Under these conditions is 18-19 mpg to be expected? All highway yeilds about 23 mpg. TIA

That sounds about right in comparisson to the mpg I am getting.

I drive only in the city (unless on a road trip) and I get between 19.5 and 21 mpg.....St. Louis is pretty flat, no hills in my daily commute, and I drive about 5 miles of my commute on the highway.

On road trips and all highway driving I get 23.5 to 25 mpg.

I'd say about 75% of my driving is stop and go in town driving and I've been getting around 25 mpg. Believe me, I am impressed after reading the comments on this site about mileage when I first got my E. I live at the beach so there aren't any hills here. Hope my good fortune keeps up!

also depends on the weight you're carrying around and if the AC is on...

Check your tire air pressure! And, check it regurally. Correcting it from 28 F - 28 R took me from 17-19 to 23-25mpg city. The E says 32psi F - 34psi R I went 34F - 36 R. And it worked wonders, I get anywhere from 280-300 miles out of the full tank.

Also, I don't accelerate hard or on the upside of the overpass, I use the downhill side to get me to 60, and then I cruise it. Also, I use the deccelerate function of the cruise control for speed control, and I coast the off ramps. So far it's worked for me.

Heh, Gadzuki, that SO TOTALLY: "You're not a driver, you're a *movement technician*!" :)

I loved that part of this review:

I loved the link brendan, (the LSD that Chris Bangle took in college apparently still hasn't worn off!) but essentially Gadzuki is correct in his approaches to better gas mileage in our beloved boxes. I've never seen more accurate EPA window sticker numbers than the Element's, and one of the primary reasons is aerodynamics (the utter and complete lack thereof!). That leaves the following primary factors to influence individual mileage: reduction in rolling resistance (higher tire pressure), gentle acceleration (the social stigma doesn't bother some as much as others), reduction in load carried (this should be easy to spot), and lastly - don't do anything to make the aerodynamics worse that they already are! Ger B. is one who complains about his poor mileage, but he's also got a gigantic marine spotlight on his roof. Aerodynamically speaking, you couldn't do much worse mounting a replica of the eiffel tower on the roof. I understand his need for it as a tool of his trade, but it's also "a hole to pour gasoline into" - which might otherwise be put to good use in the regular gas tank.

I can't get to 20mpg either. Increased the tire pressure from 28 to 32/f 34/r and it hasn't made any singnifcant difference. Most driving is in town in very flat Floriduh with the A/C on and at moderate acceleration,etc....

Same here. On my next fill up, I predict < 14mpg again, this time without the A/C running most of the tank. I had thought I was having "break-in" mileage problems, but it's only gotten worse past the 500 mile mark.

I'm going to have to bring it in to Honda and see if they can give me an explanation.

14 mpg seems really low. my worst tank was low 20's, and that was a mix of stop and go highway (ca 101) and sf hills...though i rarely run the ac

Yeah, I'm pretty concerned.

Just got my first fill up on my E. My driving is a mix of hills, city and highway. I averaged 25 mpg. :P I also have a 2002 Dodge Stratus, which only gets about 18 MPG. The reason for me mentioning my Stratus is because its my second one. I had a 1999 Stratus with the same engine and trans but I got between 25 and 30 mpg. When I went back to the dealer to complain about the crap mileage on my 02, he kept the car, drove it, hooked it up to computers, then told me to come back when the car has over 10,000 miles on the clock. The car now has 28,000 miles of use and the car still gets crap mileage. The dealer cannot explain why. I think its just the luck of the draw.

Seems like 21mpg (75mph) - 24mpg (65mph) is the norm. One VERY important thing is to re-program your defroster setting so that the AC light comes on when engaged. Bugged me for 4 months when I swore that the AC was on but the light was not... apparently Honda defaults that when you pass either defrost setting, the AC comes on and remains on even if you switch off the defrost mode. I found a post that gives you a series of button settings/key on to reprogram things so the AC light is always on when the AC is (smart thinking) so you can shut it off if not required. This alone took me from 19/20mpg to 21+mpg.

In general I think the i-vtech is designed to keep torque up at the expense of 25+mpg. The one post that is getting 25+mpg is doing pretty good, if you keep off the gas and stick to 60-65mph on the highway this is poosible (but way too painful for me to drive in the slow lane!).

I average in the 19-20 mpg range. I drive about 65% freeway (80mph). Not impressive mileage, but acceptable. What do you expect from a box on wheels????

i expect it to get the mileage as advertised (or at least the required 95% to make it statistically accurate).
