: Can I instal TPM's myself?

I just purchased a set (700 miles) of OEM 2008 SC wheels/tires for my 2008 LX. The person I purchased had them removed. I was hoping I could remove the sensors from my current wheels, and put them on the new wheels without having to make a trip to the dealer.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!!

Tony

Yourself? Do you have tire mounting/dismounting equipment?

A tire store should be able to do this for you and if you are using the sensors that came with your Element you shouldn't need to see the dealer.

The tires are already installed on the wheels and were balanced, but assuming the original TPM sensors were taken off, and I'm putting them back on (from my current wheels), I was hoping they'd just bolt on...

I don't think it's worth the money to have your wheels dismounted then remounted and balanced just to connect a TPM System. Just buy a good $30 tire pressure gauge and check the tires a few times/month.

Sounds like a good plan to me.:) A small piece of black tape over the TPMS light would be a good addition as well.

The person I purchased had them removed.
For good reason. The Honda TPMS has caused no end of aggravation, according to those who have it.

Correction: Inside the tires.

Not really, they aren't attached to the inside of the tires either.....they don't even touch any rubber.

they are attached to the rim, and are located between the rim and tire.

But i see your point! I should have said "on the inside of the wheel assembly." I didn't mean that they mount to the inboard side of the rim like a wheel weight or something.

Note it is "part of the valve stem" and requires the tire be removed from the rim for instalation. It gets attached to the inside of the rim flange much like a normal valve stem.

If you bought 'SC' tires and wheels, the 'TPMS' devices are already there. Why would you need to change them?

That's ok Will...I knew what you meant ;-)

If you don't use them...you can also pull one of the fuses to keep the light from coming on....don't know which fuse it is tho :|

I took the op's first post to mean:

Because the wheels were "used" and
The person I purchased had them (TPMS sensors) removed.

But your question makes me think......"why would the sensors be removed and then the tires remounted?" Why not keep them seperate?

Is it possible that the sensors are still there?

barzula,

Did the previous owner tell you that they were removed? OR... are you assuming that they are removed 'cause the wheels are tripping the light on your dash?

You do know that your vehicle ill need to be reprogramed by a Honda dealer so that your E will reconize these new/different sensors. Right?

Or, did you mean you wanted to swap your old sensors for the new ones so you would aviod the formentioned reprograming ? If that is the case, reprograming would prolly be less hassle than swapping I'd think.

Good luck.

Will - I still don't have the wheels/tires yet, but they should arrive this week. The previous owner told me the TPM's were removed, but now that I've learned they're mounted INSIDE the wheel, I can't understand why he would have the tires remounted...

Either way, it looks like I'll have to go back to the dealer.

Thanks for clearing this up!

Not necessarily. The seller would have likely swapped the TPMS to the new wheels. since they are already recognized by the on-board system it will just accept it and go. For the SC wheels 12-cent valve stems will be substituted...

They just thump a bit.
